Round 5 continues tonight when the Penrith Panthers host the Canberra Raiders at BlueBet Stadium in Penrith. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:55pm (AEST).

We’ve got match of the round tonight when two competition heavyweights go head-to-head in what promises to be a classic. By the end of it, we may have one or two clues as to how this season will play out.

The Panthers have started this NRL season the same way they finished last year’s regular season: pretty much unbeatable. They smashed the woeful Sea Eagles last week but have ground out wins out as well, edging the Storm by two points the weekend before.

The Panthers’ mobile forward pack is reveling in the faster playing conditions, whilst Penrith’s left edge is the best in the competition. With Api Koroisau and Dylan Edwards still to return, optimism is high in western Sydney.

The Panthers suffered no injuries against Manly and have named the same 17.

After injuries played a big part in their loss to the Warriors, the Raiders bounced back with a clinical 20-4 win over the Titans last weekend.

The Raiders’ strength lies in their big forward back who very rarely lose the yardage battle in the middle. From there, George Williams and Jack Wighton cause plenty of problems.

Joseph Tapine returns from an ankle injury and will start at lock. Josh Papalii returns as starting prop with Ryan James moved to the bench. Dunamis Lui is the one to miss out.

Prediction
Leaving the Warriors loss aside, the Raiders and Panthers have the two miserly defences in the league.

However, the Panthers do ask more questions in attack.

For that reason, think should win this one.

Panthers by 8.

How about we put the roosters-storm and penrith equally as the most dislike teams in the NRL ? making poor old Manly look good in comparison.

Doubt those Panthers fans are as talented as Ennis....a lot of them looked uncoordinated when clapping.

It was like a few thousand Michael Ennis's out there! In hindsight it was pretty funny - not so funny when your team is losing

Valemei is a big strong unit Joe - as is Kris - I can see a lot of upside in these two in the future

It looked like a knock on... but in ultra slow motion it went backwards. Really my point was why bother doing all this slow mo stuff if you are just going to go with what it looked like anyway? You can do that with just a ref, no bunker required.. no stoppage for 5 mins.

Kris was outstanding. Is Valamei better than the current wings though? Maybe still paying for his defensive lapses in the last game 2020...then again Croker was terrible in that game too...but at least he kicks goals. Ricky will need to find his best 17 before finals.

Panthers seem to be taking over the Roosters in terms of cockiness, the roosters in 2019 were doing all that pointing to the crowd when scoring etc even after scoring 6-7 tries against a bottom of the table team, no humility. That got knocked out of the chooks when the Rabbitohs beat them 60-8, and again in round 3 this year. The panthers will come crashing down to earth around September time, I hope the Rabbitohs play them in a rematch of the Prelim Final.

Yep ! I still reckon they splashed the cash on the wrong player. Burton should have been a keeper .

Got to hand it to Penrith. They play every game with the intensity of a Grand Final except the Grand Final.

Yeah - Tapine didn't look too fussed - he sort of got dragged into the Penrith try celebration as he was just standing there wanting to come on - nothing in it. Would be a fantastic GF if it happened - all that history between the two sides. Penrith are playing out of their skins at the moment - a big gap to the next rung of sides - and they'll need to close the gap if they want to beat them.

You'd think the Raiders and Panthers playing twice in the regular season would be a no brainer given how they've been playing the last few years. Glaring mistake by the NRL with their scheduling.

Agree Taree – Ricky can get away with playing favourites against some of the lower teams – and I guess Horsborough and CHN had to pay some penance for the off season DUI offences – but that time has passed. Both Horsborough and CHN have to be in the 17 – at the expense of Havilli and Sia. The bench looked very unbalanced with three middles plus Starling. As soon as CNK went down injured we didn’t have the structure to threaten Penrith. If CHN was on the bench he could have gone to centre instead of Whitehead. I know Rappa made a couple of errors but he was pretty good as a replacement at FB. He looked totally gassed at the end of the game which shows how much effort is required at FB. Penrith have become the benchmark now and I would be shocked if they don’t make the GF. Its a battle between the Raiders, Storm, Roosters, South and Eels for the other spot. We have to knock off the Eels at home next week – which I think we can. Forgot to add that we should consider giving Valemei a chance on the wing outside Kris who looks like becoming a great centre. Some of his bullocking runs have been very impressive. The two of them could form a very strong combination that would be difficult to handle. The Croker dilemma has been playing out for weeks. He’s the captain and goal kicker who gets involved in attack from time to time but just doesn’t make enough metres for mine to justify his place. Ricky has some difficult decisions to make in the next few weeks and if he doesn’t make the right ones it could cost him a potential premiership.

If Jurbo doesn't pick things up in the next month I'd have Panthers at 6, 7 and 13..and be working extra hard on validating To'o's eligibility.

I was very happy with the effort of the Raiders. If Ricky has a fault it's playing favourites. Crocker, was a wonderful player, was. He lost the game for us in the first half, three errors & missed the try. Jarrod your time has past. I was willing to give him a break coming back from injury, but he just doesn't have it anymore. I hate to say that but someone has to accept the fact, defensively he is the oppositions go to, because he is a liability. Hudson Young is a first grade standard player & a great fill in, he was a total mis match marking Villiami Kikaui. We need Corey Horsburgh back in the 17. Horsburgh brings a lot of size, passion & mongrel to the pack. It just disappoints me as a passionate fan that the Raiders under Ricky Stuart have formed the best squad of 30 in the competition, they have total depth in all positions, they just need to be used without playing favourites.

Yes me too, HS. Rugby is sometimes overboard with it, but league is definitely too loose.
