Has John Morris done enough to be given a contract extension at the Sharks?

By The Roar / Editor

Journalist Phil Rothfield has gone in to bat for the third-year coach, but the NRL 360 panel isn’t so sure.

Morris hasn't beaten a top side above them on the table for 2 years. Needs to do it..and regularly... to prove himself and his team. Needs to be able to attract players and sign them the way Flanno did. He's done well given the circumstances and injuries but Cronulla want to get back into the top level. No doubt he is a great assistant and development coach but he has a little to prove yet as a head coach. Also he appears not to have forgiven Fifita for the Wighton try in the finals last year which turned the game. Fifita is a club legend who won us a comp off his own back. This appears to me a sign of inflexibility. Fifita deserves a chance to prove himself again.

Because if you wait until someone else comes knocking to look after key staff you’re sending the message “we are a rubbish workplace- look elsewhere “. You’re forcing staff to make the decision to leave. It will tell the players that, future recruits that and most importantly Morris.

For mine he is one if the best young coaches in the game. He has done extremely well since getting the job and yet has had the sword of Damacles over his head since being appointed. There are coaches far more secure in their gigs with arguably better rosters who haven’t come close. Give the bloke a comtract.. he has earned it

More to the point what has he done he to be sacked. This is modern day rugby league, perform or be sacked. If that's the case we'd have no coaches or players.

yep, do it. He isn't a Des or Mary, the team is competitive and playing well. Unless your new coach can guarantee a premiership Morris will have this lot close to or in the 8. That's as good as you can expect.

So the Club waits until August/September to sign a coach and the player waits till then to see who the coach is going to be. I don't see a problem with waiting.

Because it effects recruitment and retention of players. Players are reluctant to sign somewhere without knowing who will be coaching them. If the club is so concerned about commiting to the coach and then this season falling apart put performances clauses in that must be met for the new contract to become active. Morris may not like it, but if no other clubs are interested in his services he will take it.

Sharks are playing well, they are a mid table team, and wont get to top 4, but Morris has the respect of the players and has produced some good footy. There's at least 4 other coaches that should worried about their position (and team) way before JM.

Exactly. Why make a decision now on a coaches future? Wait a few months and then see what transpires

Dragons fans know from experience with Mary McGregor, making that sort of call at this time of the season is a seriously bad move. Unless another Club is looking to poach Morris, why not wait to see how the season plays out, at least until a few rounds before the finals.

I like 5he way the Sharks play footy so he stays for mine. I'm not 100% convinced on their defence but a couple more rounds should tell us more about that.
