Ricky Stuart apologises to the netball community after social media backlash

By The Roar / Editor

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart apologised ahead of Magic Round after journalist Paul Kent revealed Stuart had said that he ‘may as well coach netball’ if he couldn’t have tough conversations with his players.

Yeah, how terrible I comment on a site that’s sole purpose is for people to comment. And funnily enough, you’ve made the same number of comments...nice own goal Mick...

Perish the thought JA, if Ricky says that his Raiders have been playing like a bunch of girls.

Nothing to do with grammar old chap. I'll try again - little short phrases. You opened with something about something not making sense. You immediately followed with something of your own, which did not make sense. Does that make sense to you? :crying: :stoked:

When Ricky comes out and says him and Kent are friends I'll believe it. It's like having Donald Trump as a relative. Geez you wouldn't tell too many people.

Am I now led to believe that the old male sporting put down of “you’re playing like a girl” is frowned upon as well? On a serious note, the majority of these type of comments are made by people who have no intention of offending anybody however that point is lost on those who lie awake at night thinking of something to be upset about. I don’t watch or listen to the ABC however I’m sure there will be somebody there calling for Ricky’s sacking.

He has used their sport as an example of being weak so other than the fact we have ads on TV at present trying to educate Dinosaurs like Ricky than derogatory comments like his have a lasting effect on perceptions and behaviors of those who would like to abuse others. His non-apology on reinforces that he doesn't get that using Women and women's sport as a put down is offensive and damaging.

It was simply inaccurate though. You watched the full video to the end didn't you?

Aren't we a tad oversensitive though? You can't say anything without someone, somewhere, of some gender, of some religion, of some ethnicity, of some orientation, of some hair color, of some weight, of some age, of some hobby, of some sport, of some state, of some coffee preferences, of some beer preferences getting offended. Have I missed anyone/thing?

It also didn't make sense. He's was talking about the player coach dynamic. Why would netball coaches be unable to have tough conversations. Even the stereotypes suggest females are more likely to be competent and willing verbal sparring partners. (Ricky would be a terrible netball coach, imagine his petulance at the 40 fifty fifty umpires decisions that led to a goal)

Paul Kent said on the show that he and Ricky were friends, probably meaning reasonably close. If that is the case then Kent should have kept the conversation private if he's not smart enough to see the dig at netball. Kent comes across as a smug type of character/journalist that would betray anyone. I don't know his vertical dimensions but he has a good dose of LFS.
