The Brumbies and Hurricanes meet to decide the last Super Rugby Pacific quarter-final of the weekend. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:45pm AEST.

The Brumbies have received a reality check in the last three weeks after a flying season up until that point.

It never feels right to say a team needs to lose but in the Super Rugby format it wasn’t the worst thing to have a couple of losses in a row and still have a home final to show for it.

The last loss came at the hands of a spirited Moana Pasifika who finished their season on a high with just their second win.

The defence has been a bit of a concern but the Canberra side will hope that inclusions this week will strengthen the key areas.

“We’ve had a big five weeks and didn’t get it right last weekend, but given we were a couple seconds from beating the Blues and had been getting good results before that Crusaders match, we’re confident and excited to get back in front of our members, fans and families,” Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said.

Tom Hooper has been named at blindside flanker with fellow Brumbies pathways product Luke Reimer selected at openside.

The remaining changes to the Brumbies starting selection also come in the pack with James Slipper and Folau Fainga’a rotating into the front row at loosehead prop and hooker respectively.

The Hurricanes also stumbled into the finals with a loss to the Force.

TJ Perenara makes his 150th appearance for the club while lock Isaia Walker-Leawere and Blake Gibson return.

“It’s good to have Izzy back in after being unwell. He’s a big man, and we’re going to need the big strong men [against the Brumbies] in the forwards around set piece, so now that he’s back to 100% we’re hoping for big things from him” Hurricanes coach Jason Holland said.

“TJ becomes the first ever Hurricane to play 150 games for the Club. This is a phenomenal achievement and epitomises TJ’s commitment to our Club.”

“As a group we are in awe of what he has done for the Hurricanes and we are desperate to make it a memorable night to do this milestone justice,” he said.

Thanks Paulo. I admit I'm carrying a resentment against Expat Kiwis who leave their homeland, and then become commentators but it doesn't take a lot for them to display their inbuilt bias. Why pretend?. I estimated it took until the final 20 minutes when the Brumbies hit the front which over the 4 games is actually 3.75 games. Lets see what the weekend brings.

Be careful to use his Christian name, Cornchips. There are people here who lie in wait to slag the other Hooper and you can trigger them from their sleep unnecessarily

Very true mate, could not quite finish it however. I’ve always been a fan of how they as an organisation have gone about their work. Not as big a fan of their tendencies in and around the breakdown, but as a whole they develop players within their system better than anyone in OZ. Just think the Blues & Saders are a level above in skill across the park, and done it constantly this year. Brums have struggled at times early in the year.

“The worst of which was a clear 50/20 by Lolesio that was not awarded that would’ve given the Brumbies a lineout 5m out.” See, if you learn the rules, it will help this feeling of persecution. As the Brumbies took it back over the 50m line when they stole the line out it’s not a 50/22. I assume this is his kick at 55:24. Canes line out 2m on their side of half way. Brumbies steal it from the Canes side of half and knock it back to Lolesio in the brumbies half, who kicks from inside his half and it bounces out inside the 22m. This is the problem when people don’t rewatch or don’t know the rules and then voice things like facts. This was the correct call, you are wrong. If you don’t know the rules, ask. I do, all the time still.

“Us Oz supporters took it on the chin for 3.6 games so ????” I’m assuming this was tongue in cheek sarcasm? There is no upside down emoji to help with this on the Roar.

there are no top 6 final rounds anywhere in the world in any game as far as i know they have either top 4 or top 8. most competitions with 10 - 14 teams have only top 4 URC i think has 16 teams and 8 team finals round. its just rubbish when who could not win atleast 1/2 their round robbin matches are playing in finals for a shot at the cup

Doesn't really matter though. Canes could not win at that point no matter when or how he kicked it.

" not at Saders or AKL level," Good enough to be in front at the 79th minute against the Blues a couple of weeks ago.

I think Hooper needs to be included in the wallabies camp. This was his first full game as far as I know and he stampeded into wallabies contention with a MOTM performance making ARDIE look average which is as rare as it gets.

I'm not sure he was milking it but he does have a history of doing so. That being said as soon as he went down in agony my bet was that there was no chance he was going off

Yep, the brumbies have some serious back row depth. Will be a real fight for starting positions next year! Pistol Pete 7, valentini 8, hooper 6?

Yeah agree it maybe hard for the Rebels to fit Thor and Mafi in with Pone and Uleses taking the starting spots, maybe they can come off the bench..hehe

Yeah I just thought if it occurred before the final siren that the line out was to be played, so a tap and kicking it out would be hurricanes ball at the throw-in but I was wrong.

Agreed but, when you find a tactic that gets you ahead across the stats board at HT, then it becomes mystifying why you go away, from that tactic. Possession is the key but when you don’t respect it, that’s when you dig a deep hole and jump in. The Brumbies then took full advantage of all this possession coming their way and slowly but surely, steam-rolled over the Canes with their set-piece attacking go to plan. Canes had no answer hence they go home while the Brumbies, go to Auckland.

You can only build pressure when you have possession. IMO, the Canes won enough ball to continue their first half tactic…except, they changed tack and gave that possession to the Brumbies with endless, wayward kicking that neither sought or managed to place any pressure, on the Brumbies. You can’t win a game in defensive mode and you definitely can’t win, if you kick all your possession away.
