Ireland vs All Blacks: See how hosts' epic win unfolded

By Oliver Matthews / Expert

Ireland will look to cause an upset as they take on the All Blacks at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin. The Irish will know that they are up against a New Zealand side in good form but the home side will be full of confidence after a huge win just a few days ago. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 02:15 am (AEDT).

After a comfortable win over Italy last week, Ian Foster has made 14 changes to his starting line up with the Irish presenting a much harder opponent. Sevu Reece is the only player to remain from the defeat of the Italians with Foster recalling the pack that played against Wales for this clash.

As a result, the team is stacked with talent and experience. Sam Whitelock will lead the side and line up alongside Brodie Retallick in the second row behind a front row of Nepo Laulala, Codie Taylor and Joe Moody.

The back row of Ardie Savea, Dalton Papalii and Ethan Blackadder has pace and power with just the right amount of mongrel in there too to cause issues for the Irish at the breakdown if they aren’t clinical in their rucking.

The backs will be led by the combination of TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett with Rieko Ioane and Anton Lienert-Brown lining up in the centres with David Havili coming off the bench.

The bench has some fantastic talent ready and raring to go with the likes of Akira Ioane and Richie Mo’unga eager to get their starting jerseys back.

In response, Andy Farrell has only tinkered with his Irish side as they look to kick on from their huge victory over the Japanese last week. Four of the team have never faced the All Blacks including scrum half Jamison Gibson Park who will need to have a very good game to keep his pack moving forwards.

Outside Gibson Park will be the experienced Johnny Sexton who will pick up his 101st cap as he takes on the All Blacks for the 14th time in his career. He’ll have the combination of Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose outside him in the centres – a pairing that has both attacking flair and brute power for the Irish to use to cause some damage in the Kiwi defence.

In the pack the only change sees Iain Henderson coming into the second row where he’ll partner James Ryan.

Prediction
A fully packed and passionate Aviva Stadium is a daunting place to play and the Irish will want to get in front early to get the crowd loud and involved.

But the All Blacks are just too good across the park to let the crowd get to them and this should be another win for the New Zealanders.

All Blacks by 12.

As an Irish fan I don't think NZ should be that upset, Ireland were at their best at home and NZ were still in the game with ten to go. However, I do think there are some areas NZ were poor enough: They kicked too much and gave cheap posession away to Ireland who already dominated posession. Surprisingly ineffective at the breakdown. I think I saw Perenera make more of an effort at breakdown poaches than some of NZs key forwards. Think Moody, Whitelock and Retallick are past it. NZs lineout did not dominate and Whitelock made a poor decision to kick for goal rather than put pressure on Ireland with 15 minutes to go. Whitelock also struggled a bit with the ref and missed a key clean out on Lowe in the last 5 minutes. Retallick and Moody were dominated by their opposite numbers in my view too. That said NZs defense was outrageously good and I think before I could really get excited as an Irish fan we will need to beat them in NZ.

Congratulations Irish fans, your team played very well and deserved the victory. The final scoreboard did not truly reflect the dominance Ireland had during the game. Really enjoyed the respect that the Irish credit showed goal kickers, yet other times the vocal support for the host country made for an incredible atmosphere.

Far from a miracle, hard work. The Irish had a well thought out strategy and they executed it perfectly. They all played their parts at bringing down the All Blacks. It’s becoming a theme under Foster, once the opposition can apply enough pressure the ABs will implode. Your comment on 90 some tries.. Have to look at the opposition where majority of those tries came from. Doesn’t gloss over the inequalities that’s appearing. Sky isn’t falling in, we need a few years of dropping down the Peking order before anyone starts to really panic

As long as they are peaking in 23, Foster not subbing was the failure in the second row

Agreed. ABs do no wrong in the eyes of Kiwi commentators. Why were we even listening to them when the match was in Ireland?? I found it insulting when they labelled Ireland's win 'a miracle'? As if the ABs were always going to win this one easily.

Well I actually agree. What exactly has Retallick done? He hasn't been the same player since returning. Whitelock showing his age. Sure, experienced, but the game is starting to take its toll on his body

But hang on, I thought the All Blacks were dominant this year scoring 90 something tries. Oh wait...it's the coaches fault! NZ rugby fans panicking. Heads need to roll! It's hilarious! Congrats to Ireland! And again, great refereeing. The All Blacks simply cannot help jumping offside and it once again they were punished for it! It's ingrained into their DNA: give away a penalty when defending their goal line. Ireland played superb and well deserving of that win. A bit insulting by the kiwi commentators calling the Ireland win 'a miracle'? In fact, why were we even listening to the kiwi commentators and not hometown Irish commentary board?

Gezus, Mary and Joseph! The All Blacks are becoming Dryshite! Ireland has punished the ABs, on and off the park. Foster & the ABs looked out muscled, out thought and out strategised. There is no strategy within the All Blacks! The passion and determination within the Irish team is something Foster and his team can’t conjure up. It’s dead.. Across the board, the All Blacks were clearly outplayed, not even really close! Don’t agree? BS! Look at the half time stats to give you a clue.. Possession (%): 70-30 Territory (%): 73-27 Tackles: 158-37 Missed tackles: 10-7 Runs: 83-28 Run metres:239-98 Penalties conceded: 7-4 Set pieces won: 9-7 Turnovers won: 2-2 Linebreaks: 1-2 Kicks in play: 3-8 Kick metres: 82-176 Handling errors: 6-4 it only got worse for the ABs By the end Ireland forced us into 238 tackles!! Mammoth ask, the ABs just collapsed under the share weight and volume of relentless attack. Like Germany Blitzkrieg into Poland.. Just rolled over us. Foster needs to take a good long look at himself, so does the men who wear the black jersey. Ask themselves, did I do everything possible? Because the Irish certainly did! And some. Ireland did everything far better, the coaches prepared the team extremely well. They were well and truly ready to stomp all over the All Blacks.. Foster is clueless, clearly clueless. This rotation policy is destroying team cohesion. There is no composure or competence within the team. How are guys going to gel in less than a week out from a game in Dublin! The French will destroy us. It’s becoming an easy blueprint.. Make every tackle. Rush the ABs attack. Back yourself. That’s about it.. The All Blacks crumble, under any team that doesn’t make many unforced errors and controls their discipline. I gave Ghoster, the benefit of the doubt 2020.. I blamed rust against Fiji.. Close calls against a young in experience Wallabies team. The pitiful display against Italy was a bit of a warning. It’s becoming obvious that Foster is out of his league and so are a number of the guys in Black Jerseys. Can’t tell me it’s because they’re still learning or due to inexperience.. BS! so is Ireland, a number of the Irish guys are still in single digit caps! If anything that should give us an edge, theres something fundamentally wrong within the All Blacks culture. The ABs psychological toughness can’t compete with teams like Ireland, SA, England. Wales at full strength will get the edge over us as well. We don’t deal with hardship, we can’t handle confrontation well? We either get frustrated and get penalised or we start making mistakes. Shuffling players around like Foster insists on doing is not working. We need 15 players that are the 15 All Blacks, with a support crew based around it. Now Foster is even more clueless about who that is than he’s been ever before!!! Wake Up. I’m actually wanting France to annihilate us. Maybe Foster and his clowns will retire  or NZRU can his contract! I’ve seen AB coaches with better records get pushed out. Get stuck into the Guiness Ireland!! You bloody earned it

There should be a clear back up plan for NZ commentators. Put it into action soon please, I cannot stand it anymore. Why does the yellow button on my remote not work?

Just like NZR weren't bold enough to select razor. Or clever enough to centralise and professionalise first the 7s game, now the women's game when it was obvious it was needed to keep competing at international level. The 22 and 23 world cups are write offs, hopefully NZR can turn it around like they eventually did with the 7s

The amount of tackling that Blackadder and Papili done in the first half would of gassed them. There was a lack of vim and vigor in the 2nd half from the pack. Tight 5 not being able to match Ireland counterparts the cause?

I’m not sure TJ makes it to RWC - what does he actually bring? Lowe and Gibson were thinking really good but it’s the Irish forwards who were incredible …

Looks like we are finally paying the price for Fozzie staying on. The 2023 WC can’t come quick enough so that he can fail and move on. In the meantime, I’ll have to befriend a good cardiologist.
