The NSW Waratahs, desperate for a win, welcome the ACT Brumbies to the SCG to kick off the Super Rugby AU Round 7 frivolities. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:45pm (AEDT).

Following a week in which former head coach Rob Penney was controversially sacked, infuriating fans, the Waratahs are crying out for a win, or at least something that resembles good news.

They’re chained to the floor of the ladder at the moment, the only Super Rugby team in either Australia or New Zealand without a victory this season. Unfortnately, things don’t look as if they’ll be any easier tonight.

The Brumbies have just the one defeat to their name in 2021 – a nailbiter to the Reds a few weeks ago – and they come into tonight after pantsing the Force last time out.

Dan McKellar has also been given some welcome news on the injury front, with star winger Tom Wright and back-rower Tom Cusack both passed fit to play after overcoming knee and shoulder troubles respectively. They both come straight back into the starting XV tonight.

There’s at least some similar good news for the Waratahs. Captain Jake Gordon hasn’t appeared since the season opener in February, courtesy of a high ankle sprain, but has been cleared to play ahead of schedule. Such is the importance of the skipper that he’s been put straight back into the run-on side by interim coaches Chris Whitaker and Jason Gilmore.

'I am raising some questions, I am not making statements... ' Neutral, I'm succinctly answering the question with a statement using my big mouth! And, get this one right too, the only person on the planet (Russia included) that can 'expect more' from me is my mother. Period. :boxing:

Very incosistent referreeing. Brumbie's didnt play up to expectations but did reasonably considering that for a quarter of the game they only had 14 players!

Sure. But how many of those on effort vs lack of ability or experience? No doubt the defence has been awful but I don’t think in most cases it’s lack of effort.

Harrison needs a kick up the arse, or some serious councilling. He has no confidence in himself and I think it may be altering his decision making. Kicking on top of kicking when it does not work. His up and under were useless and he kicked at least 2 dead into touch. Just embarrassing. The waratahs would be a much more entertaining team if he actually took the ball to the line like he did when he first started. He is light years from wallabies atm

I would question the defence of the reserve scrum half, Harrison, Moera, Newsome (at 13 and wing), Maddoxks+++ (bearing in mind his tackling last night was also poor- no way Wright should have scored), Nawitigase. That's before I get to the forwards....

Boosho, he just threw out some quite provocative bait (as he's prone to do from time to time) to wind everyone up. He succeeded. He loves being argumentative sometimes, (at least) just for the sake of it. TNVFS, cheers to you

Doubt it. Even if the next coach comes in and wins a grand finale, people on here will still clamor on about how it was Penny who put structures in place and the board got lucky, blah blah blah...

Defence has been ordinary - it's not all attitude though. A midfield with Moeroa, who cannot move laterally paired with a winger in Newsome was never going to work, nor did the inexperienced halfback as shown on some of NB's video's this week. I've seen blokes running the pill after the full time siren despite being 50 behind. I've seen a 98kg Tizzano give everything to try and stop the 135kg Tupou, one on one, with a full head of steam. Am I surprised he got bumped? No, do I think he gave his all - you bet ya. The only guy that has looked like he was phoning it in at times was Dempsey. His 6 runs for 15m vs Tizzano's 12 for 36m in the first Brumbies hit out was a pretty stark contrast for the senior man in the pack. Then you flip it to defence and Carlo made 13 tackles to Jack's 5, just not good enough from the former Wallaby. There isn't another player I've questioned the effort of.

Yeh not sure about that either Jez. Some tries have been an absolute joke that they have let in. As cheika says you don't need superstars to defend just the right attitude which they were clearly lacking.

Yeah Gilmore said as much that the team was hurting and they wanted to put in a performance for Rob. The words spoken were honest and the shock is pretty clear on the co coaches and players I reckon. It could be devastating but I hope it galvanises the young team instead

Wow that centre pairing if the waratahs is a real threat. Big fan of perese. I think now that Gordon is back and the centre pairing humming, it's quite obvious the weakest link is Harrison. He is close to the most boring player to watch. Reminds me so much of Morney Steyn. Kicks all day, only none of his outside players want him to kick. Foketi and perese just want the ball in their hands.

Haha. Check the score. They won, despite being "off", a man down, a rubbish Ref.

Pinetree: I have seen this many times over the years and I am generally quite cynical about it. I thought that the players upped their efforts because they hoped that a new coach would keep them on and not dump them as a part of the problem. This situation in the Tahs is not like that, current coaches know them all well and the players seem to have genuinely appreciated what Penney was doing. The Waratahs management and board have an ego problem so big even Sir Edmund Hillary could not get over it! The rot must stop and you start the surgery at the head!!!!!

Highly likely. The Brumbies looked very loose which played into the Tahs hands
