The Queensland Reds welcome the Wellington Hurricanes to the balmy surrounds of Townsville for their season opener on Saturday night. Join The Roar for live coverage from 7:30pm AEDT.

The name Lynagh and the number 10 jersey are synonymous with Queensland rugby and in a throwback to the 80’s and 90’s, the son of the legendary Michael Lyngah, Tom, makes his debut in the maroon jersey.

Brad Thorn’s team have looked impressive in their pre-season trials with plenty of points scored, and all without Taniela Tupou and James O’Connor who are injured. There are also injury concerns with the Reds locks that might have had Thorn thinking he might have to pack his boots and mouthguard.

Despite those injuries, the Reds backrow of Seru Uru, Fraser McReight and Harry Wilson have what it takes to match their counterparts, led by Ardie Savea.

The Reds backline looks strong on paper and hopefully the likes of Jordan Petaia can have a strong showing and impress Eddie Jones to lock down a permanent spot in the Wallabies.

The Hurricanes might be wondering what they got themselves in for as they swap temperatures in the high teens for low 30’s and high humidity. The inclusion of countdown clocks for set piece and kicks at goal in 2023 will certainly get a workout.

Dane Coles is in his last season before retirement, and he will no doubt be up to his usual tricks to get under the skin of his opponents. The Hurricanes are without their first choice flyhalves but with the likes of Jordie Barrett and Julian Savea in the backline they will pose a danger to the Reds. Barrett’s kicking game could prove vital in the final makeup and if he is given shots at goal, the Reds could be in for a long night.

I never said the game was a spoiler, I was referring to Fraser’s disallowed try due to a technical error that was quite marginal. The try was exciting to watch and if new people to rugby were supporting the reds they might feel very confused, dejected and not understand. I know it might be hard to relate for those of us who have followed rugby for a while, but growing the game and getting new people to like it requires them to follow a team, and when they see a try disallowed on a technicality such as that to their team they might get frustrated and turn away. As for your comment on them following another game, that’s what we are trying to stop happening. You can’t grow the game if they turn away.

tonights game explains why there is more Brumbies in the Wallabies…. Ardie took the reds forward pack to school.. dont ever compare Wilson and Valentini again.. Wilson gets carried by Mcreight and Tim Horan.

I wonder if he is a mini Hodge in the making .... missing defensively, offensively but can kick. Woohoo the future is bright indeed

Anyone else coming to an understanding of just how much we’ve lost with the departure of Hamish Stewart?

Blythe, Jones, Vunivalu and O'Connor. So it's 8 starters missing actually. That's a lot of SR experience to be missing

I’m with you on growing the game in Australia. You and I have the same aim. However that game wasn’t a spoiler. It was a good game. Unfortunately the skills were being shown by our Kiwi cousins. Greater discipline, better scrummaging, eager support play. If people are turned off rugby by that Game it’s because their team lost. And as far as technicality is concerned, if someone likes simple, and there is nothing wrong with that, they should follow another game. Rugby is technical. If it wasn’t, it would not be rugby.

Man you guys are harsh. Did you miss that carry in the first half, alone in his 22 under pressure where he beat three Canes to recycle the pill? He kicked well and distributed nicely. It's not his fault everyone else dropped the ball in first phase contact and we couldn't build any attack. Yes, he defended poorly and is too slight, but is a promising talent nonetheless.

Not sure he’s absolute trash. He just has a ways to go. He’s pretty small and he’s not 78 Kg. He would struggle to be 60.

his surname got him to where hes at. Hes a average player at best, leave him in the little leagues where he belongs. Tonight confirmed what ive been saying.. Absolute trash!

He chose to play meaning he is up to it and is open to being critiqued. Or do people think he is beyond that because of his surname, the colour of the jersey and or his age? I’m sorry, am I missing something?

Topou, Hooper, Jock and Liam Wright? Not sure that will make any difference to that defense and attitude.

Lynagh was missing the entire game and just got rolled out to kick. Anyone would be quite composed if tehy were hidden that deep defensively. Jorgensen and Toole on the other hand had no protection. They attacked and defended well. I think the two 18 year olds were not only more composed but had a bigger impact on the game than Lynagh. If you think that Lynagh is up to it and should get picked again, then you are in for a long season.

Jorgensen and Toole were both in the back three. Big difference playing flyhalf when your forwards are going backwards after 20 minutes. Lynagh was quite composed considering how poorly the Reds played.

Why give him a break? Because he’s 19. A couple of players in the Tahs / Brum game were 18. They had standout performances and weren’t hidden deep. Playing with Lynagh, the reds are playing a man down. All he has is a kick… not a slick distributor, not a runner and not a defender… i don’t think the reds can afford to carry him. He needs to come into the side with more than the ability to kick from the tee else he’s a passenger regardless of his heritage or age. Good on him for making his debut and I am happy for him, but Canes are not a tough first assignment any more than any other SR side. This Canes outfit looks to be quite weak. As I started with if you think Canes are tough and that is justification for that performance then he is not ready for this level.
