The Sunwolves face their toughest test of the Super Rugby season, a game against the Crusaders in Brisbane. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 4:35pm (AEDT).

It’s by far the most clear-cut game this year. The Crusaders, defending a three-peat, take on the three-time wooden spooner Sunwolves. After an early – and promising – win against the Rebels, the Japanese team’s season has derailed. They’ve conceded 40-plus every time since then and sit in last place, with only the most optimistic of fans giving them a chance to play finals.

COVID-19 has caused two of their home games to be relocated to Australia, the second of which is tonight, meaning that they effectively play a six-game tour, which has taken its toll.

While the Crusaders have been nowhere near as dominant as years gone by, they still shape as one of the best teams this year. They trail the Chiefs in the New Zealand conference, but only by points differential, while still holding down a spot in the top four. A win tonight should see them top the Kiwi group, as the Chiefs have a much tougher match-up against the Hurricanes.

However, with three gruelling Kiwi derbies coming up, against the Hurricanes, Highlanders, and Blues, the coming few weeks could decide where the Canterbury locals finish.

In team news, Scott Robertson has rested a number of All Blacks, in Codie Taylor, Joe Moody, Scott Barrett, Jack Goodhue, and Richie Mo’unga.

Bryn Hall will captain from nine, Brett Cameron will join him in the halves, while the one change in the back line is Braydon Ennor coming in for Goodhue. Only three players remain from last week’s pack: Cullen Grace, Tom Christie, and Mitchell Dunshea.

The Sunwolves made two changes to the pack: Ben Hyne comes in for Kotaro Yatabe and Mitch Jacobson slots in for Shunsuke Nunomaki. Siosaia Fifita moves from 13 to 14, James Dargaville takes over from Yoshizumi Takeda, and Keisuke Moriya is at outside centre.

Prediction
It’s a pretty straightforward tip. Sunwolves have been poor since their opener, the Crusaders are practically on the plane home already.

Crusaders by 25.

Dilko, here’s how I’m thinking about it. My Tahs can’t win the SR. Brumbies can and I’d love them to. If the season is going to be completed I’m hoping both teams play well and the Brumbies win. But if the season is going to be abandoned I hope they both play well and the Tahs win to give me hope for the next year. And it would give hope and evidence of a clear raise in standard for Australian rugby

Great coverage Tom. Really enjoyed it. Saders were disappointing though. Couldn't get 50.

My apologies to Mr Pickerill, I thought he was Leckie. When I see Pickerell (née, Leckie :unhappy: ) and Rasta listed as refs, I know we will get a pretty decent match, reffed consistently. It was great to see him get the correct support from his AR’s and TMO in the second half. That was a great standard, shame it didn’t occur in the first half.

It isn't looking good. I wonder if an inter-Australia SR comp could be a possibility at closed stadiums.

He's a reluctant referee Pickerill when it comes to the big calls, but overall I think he did ok.

Totally relevant. In motion of tackling, committed to tackling is always taken into account when judging if a tackle is considered late. Anyway, agree to disagree.

Converted. Game over! Well it felt weird, but that game is over. A 35 point win for the NZ side which will elevate them to 1st on the table, at least temporarily. We don't know what's gonna happen to the rest of the season with the news out of NZ today. FULLTIME: Sunwolves 14 Crusaders 49

CRUSADERS TRY! Schatz goes down the blindside, Sunwolves with it 5 out. Stolberg, Schatz once more. Downey pushes forward. Bregvadze picks and goes. Crusaders win it, now kicked ahead, and the Sunwolves recover. Nope, back for the Crusaders. Loose ball almost goes into touch. 6 out. Douglas, Reece, Burke now TEARS THROUGH FOR THE TRY! 81' – final play Sunwolves 14 Crusaders 47

It's what we expect from our modern forwards. Silky hands as well as the hard stuff.

Converted. Kickoff again, now the Sunwolves kick ahead. Dargaville toeing it forwards. Now the Crusaders try to clear – Burke knocks on in goal! Oh no, that won't help his confidence. He recovers. Scrum 5 out. 79' Sunwolves 14 Crusaders 42 Sevu Reece returns now.

Quite an enjoyable match. Including the usual behavior from the usual. Well done the Moonies and also the Untouchables for their 13 man effort.

Such skill from the Canterbury hooker. Twice now he has been in the offload before a try.
