By The Roar / Editor

Michael Hooper bluntly shut down talk that his Wallabies captaincy is at its end.

Damn straight. You guys do things the Australian way, that’s why Kiwi coaches don’t work well in Aus, because they don’t understand the Australian way. I mean, what do us Kiwis know about rugby? Really though, that mentorship js all about culture (and on field skills). Skills are developed within the overall culture. People talk about the conveyor belt or talent in NZ, here’s the secret, it’s all about culture.

I appreciate your response Paulo. These ARU executives and the coach are paid plenty to be thinking these things through and acting - it seems they are flat out getting half way through the first bit! By way of comparison - I watched the wily All Blacks coaches have Dan Carter shift out to second five regularly in his last couple of years, specifically to mentor his potential replacements on the field; and they tested several potential captains during Sir Richie's last few seasons on the field, playing the top sides. We are too clever to follow their lead though.

All fair points. I only referenced selection in refers to the next Captain would need 100% certainty of selection so they were always there. No point having a Captain who isn’t hands down best in Their position... when that’s the case look at happens, teams get pooped.

Great player, terrible captain. He deserves to retain his spot but not the captaincy. I agree with others, Matt Phillip could be my pick. Seems to have a lot of rugby IQ, shown more than Hooper at least.

It “is what it is” is an odd, meaningless modern term, I know. I will stick with the more conventional Hoopla is a terrible choice as captain, because he is not at all equipped for the job. It certainly reflects poorly on whoever decided it was a good idea – Ewen Mackenzie? – and all the other coaches who left him in it. Likelihood of selection is no longer a useful excuse, he lapsed into mediocrity years ago. Our ever so clever ARU badly needs to do one of those workshop thingies on “Succession planning”.

Yeah tbh I thought he showed restraint. It was a strange question to ask, and clumsily asked at that. No doubt Hooper was thinking “mate, what’s your f...... point?”

I just realised Hooper looks a bit like Jack de Belin from some angles.

Not much point naming them, It's not possible since nobody knows whether the 3 pointer on offer would have even been kicked successfully.

Worst WB captain I've ever seen. And he won't learn either. He lost WBs another game with those dumb decisions to kick for the corner with a dodgy lineout. That's now more than 10 games he's directly lost by not taking easy kicks at goal. And he says he's happy with those decisions huh. Happy with being responsible for losing more than 10 Tests huh - strange captain

IMO Matt Philip even if Arnold and Rodda come back.

His leadership is what it is. But who in the team has really put their hand up, and is ALWAYS going to be first pick for their position? I don’t think there is many on the list.

If that's considered "frosty" then someone needs lessons from my Missus.
