SEMI-FINAL: Matildas vs England

Women's World Cup

Venue:Stadium Australia
Matildas England
1 SCORE 3

The nation will stop like at no time since Cathy Freeman’s run in the 2000 Olympics tonight as the Matildas get set to take on England for a spot in the final of the Women’s World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8pm (AEST).

From Western Sydney to the world, it’ll be watched by a record number of Australians and tens of millions around the globe, with live sites packed and sofas filled.

Naturally, we’ll be here to bring you every minute of it – and there might be a lot of minutes, especially if we go to penalties again – with our live blog starting around 7.30pm and kick off at 8pm.

It’s a meeting of minds on the bench, between quirky Swedish manager Tony Gustavsson, who leads Australia, and ice cool Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman, who is looking to add world glory to the European title that England picked up last year on home soil.

The Lionesses are slight favourites, having only lost once under Wiegman…but that was to the Tillies in a friendly before the tournament. It’s incredibly well balance, and will surely be extremely tense.

To be fair 9 of the best 22 players on the pitch were English. Only Kerr and Fowler deserve a start in that England team.

Think you’re about 75000 short. This is a real World Cup played by the best two teams out of the over 200 that play in the biggest game on earth, It’s not a pretend one.

Just home from the game. What a moment for the nation that was. Gallant in defeat, but Gustavsson handed a bit of a football lesson in key areas of the pitch. I'll knock it out in an analysis piece, but England by far the better team and crafty in strategy. A great run by the Matildas. Well played ladies.

So I'm just thinking aloud now. TG probably won't do it, but he might as well reward some players in the final game, like, bring back Kennedy who was ill, & bring in Grant, Chidiac, Vine & Yallop. Maybe not all 5 of those, but probably 3 of them. Was Kennedy missed? I don't think so. She had been part of a back 4 not always sure of themselves. Anyway, England dominated everywhere. But sure, I would make some changes but I'm guessing TG won't.

The CBA was once our bank. The peoples bank. Look at it now. Super funds controlled by Unions/Labor allies. Gotta luv Oz.

Belgium, Canada and Japan and many other Western Countries, in fact all, had a recession at the same time. Surely he didn't cause theirs too? ------- His Super has funded the infrastructure build of the past 25 years. Bank liberalisation. 2 other things but my brain is wandering.

Or you could say that having to play Polkinghorne limited his options, they had chances in the 2nd half but didn’t take them (he’s not on the field missing them), and the officiating suited the “physical” team. Having said that, England were the better team on balance of play

Don't watch a lot of soccer but England were clearly a superior team and looked in control most of the match. Congrats England and all the best next week. Matildas tried their hearts out but it was not enough on this occasion.

Rowdy, Lachlan P's reply was sufficiently ambiguous for me let it through to the keeper. Was he referring to me, or to my comment on Albo? I have no reason to believe why he would be referring to me. Anyway, who cares.

Very rich from you, Mike. They tested the ref early with dragging on players and knocking them down, Kerr in particular. When nothing punitive came their way, that was all the licence they needed. And given all that, they were the better team. For the night and the game conditioning. If Australia was "less naive" and, if Semi-Aussle Gus had reacted quicker there might have been some more physicality back the other way.

The ref let England get away with murder in that first half. Poor game from her. If she penalised them more with yellow cards it could have disrupted their momentum a bit. Always seemed like the Matildas were on the back foot with England taking the initiative and having the momentum.

Rowdy, Albo certainly has more empathy than the other mob, I agree there. But he's been disappointing as a leader. And he's totally cruelled the V. He is the main proponent of it, & he's gone missing.
