It’s win or go home from here for the Matildas as they take on South Korea in an AFC Asian Cup quarter-final in Pune. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).

After a brilliant group phase of the 2022 Asian Cup, Australia enters the knock-out stage full of confidence, injury-free and ready to take the next step towards confederation silverware.

South Korea are the Matildas’ opponent in the final eight, another team undefeated thus far in the tournament.

After securing a 1-1 result against the might of Japan during the group stage, they will be confident of defeating the Australians in Pune tonight.

Despite scoring 26 goals and conceding just one during the group stage, the Matildas will have a far more difficult task before them tonight. A slick and skilful South Korea will zip the ball around in a manner that often creates doubt in the bigger and more powerful Australian defenders.

Such a situation could be easily overcome by a couple of early goals and a confident Matildas team; however, as we saw from the Philippines and Thailand earlier in the tournament, the Australians can be ruffled and a South Korean win in this fixture is far from an impossibility.

Logic says the Aussies win this one and the class of some of their European-based stars probably gets the job done. However, this appears to have upset written all over it and I would be hesitant to invest in the Matildas with such a formidable opposition in front of them.

Prediction

The biggest of all upsets with South Korea to triumph 3-2 in a tournament-shocking result.

Agree Lionhearted. If not for the Matildas keeper it could of been 3-0.

We shouldn’t forget that South Korea drew with Japan. And I think Japan are a pretty good side. We should never under estimate the quality of the opposition. But for me (as a a former state league player) Australia has become to predicable. Double team Sam Kerr, then the Matildas scoring opportunities become very limited. If she has an off day there’s not many other options. Passing under pressure is poor. In the two crunch games, this one and the Olympic game against the US Ellie Carpenter passed directly opposition players resulting in goals. The defence is slow. Why wasn’t the star Korean player, the goal scorer marked, she was obviously the main danger. They need to work on more option up front to support Sam. Mary Fowler looks like a star act, and there are some other girls who look the goods, but they need to be playing. Some suggestions, play Sam as attacking midfielder. If anything it will put the opposition plans into disarray. Some thing out of left field. Form an alliance wth AFL women’s to see if any of these girls would like an opportunity to play in a world. They are fit and fast and good athletes and would be an asset, assets that I don’t see in some Matildas players.

Writing was on the wall when we couldn't breakdown the Philippines for 60 minutes. And Thailand scored from the same area.

well played to the Koreans. Admittedly I was flicking between games, but looked to me like it could well have been a couple more. We have to address our women's game, and the A League women.

Fair points but the lack of integration up top with Foord and Simon is of greater concern. Both are now largely ineffective and anonymous when once they were regular goal scorers. Gustaavson has to solve quite of few issues IF he holds his job.

it was a top spot kick. Pleased to see the ref call out Adelaide early, stopped a lot of their rot.

Well if the Gaffa wanted to be judged on the tournament result then he was a failure. I said in a post after the routing in the demolition of a below par opponent that instead of worrying about who did and didn’t play that we should be more worried about our lack of being clinical in front of goals, surprise ,surprise, countless chances again and no result . Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing but when your technique goes out the door the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the staff involved. Selections once again proved critical, Van Edmond looked slow and uninterested unless she had the ball at het feet, Mary Fowler was barely sighted yet both played the full 90 minutes

Yeah, he’s gone all Craig Foster after the 4-0 loss to Germany in the 2010 WC group game.

So if the Philippines beat Taiwan, Stadjic will have taken his team further in the cup than the matildas

Newcastle haven’t played in 2 months, sure Adilaide will take the win. But that win does come against a team without any form of match fitness. Both Adilaide goals came in the last 5 minutes of match play, so it was a massive factor

I've never seen Andy Harper so negative about a national team! He's usually a hypeman no matter what happened in the preceding 90

Maybe the critical thinking after the first game wasn't too misguided.

Embarrassing result, while people were watching this tripe, you missed the youngest ever player In a league history score and it was a peach of a free kick!!!
