Adelaide Oval "very loud" says Buckley; "How many goals that's worth, I don't know"

By Ben McKay / Wire

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley believes a first win at Adelaide Oval isn’t beyond his developing side, but is no doubt as to the scale of the task.

The Magpies are 0-4 at the redeveloped Test cricket venue, which has hosted AFL matches since 2014.

“We go over to their home patch and we know that that’s a pretty hard place to come away with the points,” Buckley said.

In the five seasons since the Crows and Port Adelaide have moved in, most visitors have managed to sneak four points at least once.

West Coast (6-1) and Sydney (4-1) actually boast better winning percentages at Adelaide Oval than the two tenant clubs.

But so far, success has eluded Collingwood – just as it has St Kilda, Carlton, North Melbourne and the two Queensland sides.

Buckley said it was “a very loud arena”.

“That challenges your communication and connection on field,” he said.

“There’s home ground advantage like when we play at home against Melbourne and then there’s real home ground advantage. Adelaide and Port Adelaide enjoy that at Adelaide Oval.

“How many goals that’s worth I don’t know.

“We’ve always been a club that enjoys travelling and the challenge of leaving the home state and galvanising together as a unit to go and get a job done.

“So we’re not concerned or overawed by the challenge or previous records.

“We intend to go across and perform. We want to win.”

Statistical website AFL Tables lists Collingwood as having played at 29 venues through its VFL/AFL history.

It has only failed to win at three; Adelaide Oval, the WACA – where it played four matches in the 90s – and Toorak Park, one-time home to St Kilda during World War Two.

The Magpies will notch a 30th league venue in round 23 when they travel to play Fremantle at Optus Oval in Perth.

One game at a time. After years of dull drudge of a system, or lack there of, we are at last playing football as a team with a recognisable vigour in purpose. The players are there, its the coach who is learning. I loved Mason Cox’s game.

I guess then that Bucks is feeling the best he's ever felt after a game since he's been coaching the pies !

Penster? maybe make your judgement when we have a forward line back? Last week we were missing Fasolo, Elliott, De Goey, Wells and swingman Moore from our best forward set up. Bit hard to judge yet based on a makeshift set up.

If you're spending $1.8 billion on a stadium where the AFL is the primary beneficiary, you have to be a little smarter than extracting NOTHING from the AFL. How dumb can you be. Should have put the AFL to the sword and made them give a few things up.

Regarding your point about the Optus Stadium, such as it is, I can't see how you can claim the stadium was a total waste simply because they miss out on one game in however many years a WA team makes the Grand Final and is seeded highest. Still get 22 games a year between Eagles & Dockers with vastly improved crowds, AFLW, cricket crowds - plus whatever concerts or other events they want to host at the stadium Since 1990 when it became the AFL a WA side has made the grand final times I believe - that's an average of 1 appearance every 4-5 years. In that time anywhere between 88-110 games of AFL would be played. Do you see why it's hard to take such hyperbole as "total waste" seriously, on the strength of that evidence? If we had to do anything to even things up, I do like the idea of 'banked' home finals next time they play a Victorian team in a prelim - much moreso than shifting it or best of 3, which I think is just dreadful

Worth about the same as a functioning forward line, Bucks ......... not looking at anyone.

The AFL has a deal with Virgin. Charter flights with Virgin are not a big deal. Playing the Grand Final at the MCG is what happened for decades in the VFL because of capacity and accessibility. Made sense to have the Grand Final in Melbourne when 11 of 12 teams were in inner-suburban or suburban Melbourne. It's been the AFL since 1990. They introduced interstate finals in 1991 in acknowledgement of the enormous travel burden interstate teams face. The next step are Grand Finals being awarded to the highest ranking Grand Finalist. If we can't have that, then best of 3 will be an acceptable compromise for now and step forward. Can't have that, then I propose that interstate teams 'bank' finals. For instance, because Adelaide was forced to play the Grand Final at the MCG last year despite being the higher seeded team, then I propose that they are 'owed' a home final. For instance, if they have to play an away preliminary final against a Victorian team, then they have the right to use one of their home finals they have 'banked'. The preliminary final would be moved to Adelaide Oval despite Adelaide being the lower seeded team. No less arbitrary than playing the Grand Final at the MCG no matter what.

Of course you believe it's a disgraceful decision. You're conveniently forgetting that the AFL is also providing charter flights to interstate grand finalists and extended training sessions to any MCG-seeded teams. A best of three grand final? No. No. Never. Please. That was be dreadful - good for ratings and publicity, sure, but a poor decision in most other respects. Also, it shouldn't come as an outrage or a surprise for interstate teams to be playing at the 'G on the final day of the year. It's been that way for decades - a century? It's what's happened for a while, and what will continue happening for a while.

I think it's a disgraceful decision. All for a measly $250 million the AFL have sold out the interstate teams -- especially financial powerhouses like West Coast, Adelaide, Sydney who have given so much to football in Victoria for no real return. The WA government just spent $1.8 billion on a stadium for the AFL. What a mistake that was. Should have made the AFL beg for it like the Victoria government does. Something has to change. Best of 3 Grand Final or interstate teams get to 'bank' home prelims if they are forced to be the away team on Grand Final despite being seeded higher.

It's pretty sad that some people feel the need to comment on every trivial, insignificant detail written about the pies and try, in their minds, to turn it into something it really isn't. Just yesterday, an article about one of our players caring for his sick father attracted all sorts of pathetic, vile opinions just because he is a collingwood player. I often what these people think they are achieving by sharing their thoughts. Stay classy folks, stick to discussing the footy.

Awesome comment, anon! Hey, by the way, isn't it great that the GF is to be held at the G until 2057, at least, now?

A bit rich from Bucks, especially with the number of home and "away" games Collingwood gets at the MCG. This sort of debate will go on ad infinitum until all teams have an equal number of home games and a neutral finals venue, be they Victorian or interstate clubs.

Don't Collingwood enjoy the same advantage when Adelaide play in Melbourne? Just more excuse making from Buckley, giving himself an alibi for when they inevitably get spanked tomorrow night.

Buckley was born in Adelaide BUT his family traveled around a lot and he spent most of his developing years in NT. He was considered to be an Allie when it came to State of Origin.

'There is a truly perverse victim mentality across Victorian clubs. There’s something really odious about the truly privileged whinging about the relatively insignificant problems they face.' This is a great, great statement.
