Why is Michael Cheika constantly hammered, while Justin Langer is blameless?

By David Lord / Expert

To pinch Justin Langer’s “elite honesty” quote, the Wallabies are playing crap rugby, and the Australians are playing crap cricket.

Both teams are an embarrassment to their sport, their sponsors, and their dwindling faithful fans.

Yet Wallaby coach Michael Cheika keeps pulling the daggers out of his back, while Langer rides blissfully on despite his teams playing the worse cricket.

Let’s compare the two sports under their respective coaches in 2018.

The Wallabies have played 11 internationals for three wins over Ireland, the Springboks, and the Pumas with eight losses.

The cricketers have played 13 internationals in three formats since Langer took over, for one ODI win by seven runs over South Africa, and a very honourable Test draw against Pakistan, with 11 losses.

No matter what Cheika says, he’s pilloried, but Langer blithely said – “There’s light at the end of the tunnel, and we’re heading in the right direction”.

Hello, and the dwindling faithful cop it, and smile.

The stats don’t agree.

In the 13 internationals the cricketers have played, the Australians have lost 137 wickets for 3148 to average 22.98 per wicket.

But the opposition has lost only 103 wickets for 3838 to average 37.26 – one-way traffic.

The Wallabies have scored 205 points in their 11 internationals, but given up 277 points, and 24 tries to 30 – also one-way traffic, but not as bad as the cricketers.

Simply, Justin Langer hasn’t played the hero shots to get out cheaply, nor has he bowled the half-trackers and been smashed, nor has he dropped the catches that matter – he’s the helpless coach sitting in the stand muttering ‘what the?’

Cheika didn’t lose possession like Samu Kerevi in the fourth minute to bomb a try, he didn’t knock-on against Wales like Kurtley Beale, Israel Folau, Will Genia, Bernard Foley, Michael Hooper, Rob Simmons and Adam Coleman when the Wallabies were on all-out attack.

Nor did Cheika ignore two gimme penalty goal shots in front like Hooper, nor did he fail to release like Ned Hanigan in the dying moments to allow Dan Biggar to pot the winning 9-6 shot.

Yet Cheika must be sacked.

Cheika had 11 of the 23-strong squad with 50-plus caps, and five more over 20 – a wealth of experience, and it’s virtually been the same throughout 2018.

So how come so many experienced footballers keep playing like Z-graders?

There’s no doubting their passion and pride in the jersey, that was clearly evident in being down 7-31 to the Pumas in Salta, but strutting their stuff in the second session with five superb tries to win 45-34 – the comeback to end all comebacks.

So the only realistic explanation for the constant failures is there’s a vacuum between the majority of 23 sets of ears.

Dumb footballers play crap rugby – so shape up, or ship out.

And only Michael Cheika can make that decision, so make it.

Seriously, David, that's one of the stupidest, most inept articles I've ever seen written on here, and by such an esteemed author! It's really, really simple. Let me spell it out for you. Trajectory and lifespan. One coach took the reins of his team THIS YEAR. He took over at the lowest point in the sport in my lifetime, if not ever. He lost the only two batsmen who could be trusted to make runs, and only one of the players involved - the junior player - had any ties to him. Any win is, after SA, a step forward. From absolute rock bottm. The other coach took over from a crisis made by players directly under his close mentorship, immediately reduced punishment, has had 4 years, and has seen the team's skills, tactics and selections narrow, which has then seen the results worsen year on year. So, one has stepped in at our lowest point, and therefore has some grace to show whether or not he can do the job. The other's been incompetent for years, and has seen his results heading south. The only shock here is that it's taken so long for so many to finally see the emperor is naked.

In fairness, those 3 suspended guys probably have a fair bit to do with it. Smith in particular was on the verge or re-writing all the records for an Aussie batsman not named Bradman. The three formats are significantly different as well... does anyone care if we lose a 20/20 match?

Mitch Marsh is a park cricketer. And NCN and Agar wouldn't make most national teams. But, you are ignoring my point through your WA coloured glasses. Did he or did he not publicly try and oust Renshaw from the test team last year while saying Bancroft should take his place? That's disgraceful. You watch him do the exact same thing when Bancroft is eligible for selection, if he actually decides to pick Renshaw at all!

The reason our bowling is atrocious is because their being told to bowl as fast as they can with no direction or ball movement both in the air or off the pitch cause it's all way too short. They should be told to slow down a little bit get line and length and let the ball do the work but their being told to do the opposite all the time.

I don't know how if Langer is the man for the job or not time will tell give him the chance. But one thing i do know is Smith, Warner, Bancroft, Khawaja, have all been in the Australian team together over the last few years and Australia haven't won many matches so why except for Khawaja, bring back 3 cheats to disgrace this country again.

Very simplistic and very good if you are after comparing apples with draft horses. Langer has his work cut out for him. He is rebuilding respect, integrity, and belief in a collection players and teams that have been decimated and dispirited by the sandpaper incident, a culture of win regardless of cost and an oppressive demand by the public for the glories of old. It is nothing like the troubles and tribulations confronting Cheika.

Simple, Langer has taken over in a difficult situation and has only been there for a very short time. Cheika has taken the Wallabies to a World Cup and coached the team for years and all we are seeing is a downward spiral.

Bowlers like Stoinis kept banging in 120 km/h half trackers. That's why they scored 13 an over, champ. South Africa bowled well in the last 10 over. Kept bowling them in the blockhole. Australia knew what they were chasing yet Stoinis and Marsh still let the run rate get out of hand.

...and yet, the Saffers scored 13 an over in their last 10. That's what Maxi's there for. Marsh and Stoinis got us ahead of the comparative run rate by the 40 over mark. How strange to blame two of the only 3 to do well. Obviously a parochial thing...although, granted, you would find something negative about a sunny spring day.

He has dropped Mitch Marsh and he has left out NCN and Agar despite Oz being beaten. Want to try that one again?

Its more of a mystery to me how Brad Arthur still has a job at Parramatta. Not even a whisper of his job being in doubt after an atrocious 2018. I dont get it.

"The way hes repeatedly getting canned publicly by those who are apparnetly in his corner raises an eyebrow or two. I see Lehmanns at it again bagging him the way he was moving around the crease. Yeh the movements were abit exaggerared but whats a guy supposed to do when the run rate is above 10 against a world class bowling outfit?" Exactly. He was almost set up to fail on Sunday night. Stoinis and Marsh were something like 4 off 20 and 15 off 35 at one point. They batted us into a hole, chewing up deliveries, not even trying to push the ball around for 1's and 2's. We were already way behind in the run rate when Stoinis came to the crease. And for all of Stoinis's big hitting, he only scored 63 off 76. That killed us especially with Marsh at the other end not batting conservatively too. Stoinis is lauded for his batting, but at the end of the day his strike rate was 83 chasing a massive total. Maxwell comes in needing 10 or 11 an over with not batsmen behind him. Maxwell had to score at a strike rate of 175 just to stay on top of the escalating run rate, with no batsmen behind him in the line up. Not only that but Maxwell faced South Africa's strike bowlers who were unbelievable bowling their yorkers. The guy was trying to score off every ball and still managed 35 off 27. He didn't have the luxury of chewing up 5 overs for no score like Stoinis and Marsh did.

Langer has a very clear bias towards his WA players. The grandstanding he did for Brancroft and the hatchet job he did on Renshaw at the start of the last summer was an utter disgrace. No state coach should be trying to get an incumbent out of the test team so one of his state players can get in. Certainly not publicly. You watch him put Bancroft straight back into the test team as soon as his suspension ends because he "would do anything to represent his country" Langer is a joke. Gillespie should have been given the nod.

Simple David, even if you cannot see it. Cheika = 2015 to 2018 = 3 years for a result of No.3 down to No.7 in the rankings and as you state; 3 from 11 wins. Langer = < 1 year in the position and losing 3 of Australia's top batsmen. Cheika is a Goose and is not an International Coach. He is a one-hit-wonder capable of 1 or 2 years and then his technical nous becomes wanting and fails.

I cannot believe what I am reading. Firstly, you take the two best batsmen out of any team and you won’t do as well. In the ODI series in England and T20s in UAE Australia had arguably 6 of their best players missing - Smith, Warner, Khawaja, Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood. And the coach was supposed to make up for this? Away from home? In some ways, losing only 1-0 to Pakistan in Tests and 2-1 to SA in ODIs were about as good as could be expected. Secondly, coaching and teamwork are far more important in rugby than cricket. A cricket coach can’t do much more than keep up morale, encourage players to play to their potential, discuss tactics with the captain, and pick up technical flaws occasionally. It is really up to the players to perform - which they did, ofte quite successfully, before coaches came along in the late 80s. But do we really have to point this out? And thirdly the obvious fact that Langer has barely been in the job six months!

You left out the "g" Don. I respect David and the experience of his years. This is however, the worst thing I've ever seen him cobble together. The comparison is hopeless and so full of holes I thought there must have been a twist at the end or something..........but no. Just a subjective attempt to defend a Randwich rugby mate. I'm sure you have good reasons to like and defend the man - Michael Cheika appears to be a good man with his heart in the right place but as a coach of the Wallabies, he has now been found very wanting and his time has come. That is indefensible. Honesty and rationality has to overcome emotion when discussing M. Cheika
