"A mate, a brother, was hurting": Ted Richards reveals what it was like at the Swans during the Adam Goodes booing saga

By The Roar / Editor

With The Australian Dream premiering in cinemas today, conversation about the last few years of Adam Goodes’ career will no doubt be reignited.

Fans have been long divided on the last few years of the dual-Brownlow medalist’s career, with this one of two recently released documentaries attempting to shine a light on the saga from Goodes’ point of view.

We recently had the opportunity to speak to Swans 2012 premiership hero Ted Richards – who was a teammate of Goodes during the saga – to get a unique internal insight into what the mood around the club was like during those volatile times.

Listen to the discussion:

Richards played 33 games for Essendon between 2002 and 2005, before crossing to Sydney ahead of the 2006 season where his career really took off.

He scored an All-Australian jumper in 2012, while also winning the flag that year in a superb campaign.

We covered the impact he felt as a close friend and teammate of Goodes, how the club discussed and dealt with it internally, as well the famous standing ovation against Adelaide in 2015.

I don't think it is ok to boo anyone. It is a personal attack.

Like the ANZAC day game? Political as they come but never any discussion or critique. Very odd.

100% this. None of the dolts who use this ridiculous phrase even knew what it meant a few years ago but now spout it in an attempt to sound intelligent. For me, it’s a marker that the author’s comment should be taken with several grains of salt, or ignored completely.

It would be great to hear from specifically indigenous people with regard to how they felt at the time Goode's was booed and how the community can be more inclusive.

Why is it always ok to boo a non indigineous player?

A new movie came out. It makes sense to comment on it NOW. But apparently to some, it's dredging up some annoying memories of an overreacting indigenous man, who was booed by yobbos for a long time.

Really? Goodes is a very well off person, hardly '2nd or 3rd class citizen'. Like anyone else regardless of skin colour he has become very comfortable and privileged to make a damn good living playing a game he loved. It's always a shame when a body, or a person brings politics into a game

Ooof, you can't complain about spouting the 'same old, same old' and then go and use 'virtue signal'.

Angela, Quadrant.org is your source of balanced information. That says plenty about where you are coming from. A quick browse at their other articles would suggest they are agitators trying to whip up fear, and implement an agenda.

Not looking for sympathy or anyone to ‘feel’ for me mate. Just making the point that this has been banging along for quite a while and that there are a few different ways of looking at the issue rather than spouting the same old, same old accusing Australia of being a hotbed of racism (a word that has nearly passed its use-by date due to its constant misuse). https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/bennelong-papers/2019/07/crying-racism-free-kick/ But if it makes you feel holy to view Australia as a country whose laws and institutions create second and third class citizens be my guest. What are you, personally, going to do to change things apart from virtue-signal on social media? Oh, and never boo at AFL games.

I didn’t and I standby my original comments – people that continually believe that the subject has had its run are blind and clearly don’t understand the challenge of being a shade different. If Angela is going to show no respect why should I show respect, back, that’s fair isn’t.

I've heard that Goodes grew up as a Manchester United fanatic and switched to Aussie Rules as the town he was living in in country Victoria didn't have a soccer team (an all too common problem in regional Australia). That's one of the reasons he was a regular in International Rules. I seriously believe that if Goodesy's past teammates were David Beckham and Ryan Giggs we wouldn't be having this conversation about racism.

Well done Cracka to at least calm down and edit your original adjective filled post. Much respect for that.

Oh my goodness,I'm a Goodes girl but that personal attack seems way out of hand. I'm picking up the boys around here aren't overly big on showing a little bit of respect within their discourse.

That is a really ignorant and unwarranted ran, Cracka. You obviously haven't read past discourses yet jump down Angela's throat like a man on . . . well, crack.
