Reviews can be really helpful, but only when they have very few guardrails – there is almost no chance that the terms of reference for this review would include “Burning it all down and starting again,” even though that’s what might be needed here.

Rugby Australia kicks off review into Waratahs as pressure mounts on Coleman ahead of Brumbies clash

No.
I look forward to what will certainly be a “root and branch” review of operations at the Waratahs.

There is no chance this gets done for free. There is also a very low probability that it goes out to competitive tender.

A review of the operation as a whole is welcome. While the results aren’t there, this is the most competitive Tahs side for a while, and I would think the coach/on field product is actually moving in the right direction.

We all know that if we don’t bow to WAs whims, that they would secede and IMMEDIATELY form test cricket Voltron and commence a 1,000 year dominance of global cricket rankings.

If McGurk is the next Warner, we need to all agree that he rides off into the sunset when he turns 30.

'As much talent as Warner coming through': Ponting's big call as Fraser-McGurk gets late IPL contract

I do. Love working from home with the shield on. Bancroft’s Shield output gives me little confidence that he’s better than when he last played for the national team.

The Dean Jones example that Australian selectors must avoid in regenerating ageing Test squad

I 100% agree, I am a statistician by trade so I jump in when people misuse stats even if I agree with them.

The point is made well (average of 18 against stronger opposition) without resorting to statistical trickery. Like Cameron Green’s test career is a number of duds and two centuries, we don’t throw the centuries out as outliers because they are his largest scores.

Deano made Kookaburra bats the must have item for Australian kids. For all of his flaws, he was the coolest (Australian) player of the 1980s

Impossible to say, in his favour is that he is scoring second innings runs, and making runs at Blundstone (avg 67 there this year), which has turned out more than its share of minefields. A 30 year old levelling up like this could well be a fluke, but if it continues into next year he’s potentially something. He is already more interesting to me than Bancroft who has made steady, but not earth shattering runs at a batters paradise.

I agree Deano improved on flat tracks/against weaker opposition. I am just wondering why you would throw out the times he did do well against good opposition as an “outlier.”

I don’t disagree, Jones was one of a handful of guys whose performances peaked against moderate opposition or on flat tracks (Warner and Hayden being another couple of great examples) but you started off alright, and then you dropped Deano’s two century match against Pakistan because it was an outlier! That’s when we steer head on into misuse of data mode.

Right now, the shield decks that get served up in Tassie are the most bowler friendly decks I have seen produced in this country. Personally, I support playing our whole test series against India in Tassie next year.

I am sympathetic to the argument, but if you carve off every good thing Deano did, of course he looks bad. Moreover, everyone is better on flat tracks/at home/against weaker opposition, so what is the benchmark?

I am not convinced that I am right about this, but my guess is that we are seeing two things (Smith in decline/bad form, Smith moving to opener) and assuming he can’t open, but my guess is he couldn’t score runs at any spot the way he is playing at the moment…

Carey the clutch king: Gloveman's stunning 98, Cummins heroics keep Kiwi curse alive in thrilling comeback win

Sure – but what’s the expectation for someone averaging 50 in the shield over an extended period though? An average of 30 at test level? Maybe 25?

I think Smith would look this bad at 4 right now. I probably change nothing for the time being but recognise that reinforcements might be needed in a hurry.

Has Bancroft has “done what has been asked of him?” Is an average of 50 in the Shield enough to bang down the door?

Bancroft isn’t a Deano quality player though, he’s a guy that most probably expect to do an Ed Cowan or Joe Burns level job for a couple of years and is that really worth all of the ink that gets spilled on his behalf?

I don’t think there is anything with Smith’s technique that suggests that he can’t open. He is either in horrendous form, or slowing down so he would be putting up these scores at 4 as well.

Smith is getting hit in the pads way more than he did in he past. That won’t change at 4.

Smith might be done, or at least getting close. Otherwise, I don’t think there is much to worry about.

This team has had a really good year. All of these changes sound like nonsense to me.

It’s the Craddock school of cricket journalism. If Carey makes a score here, do we move on to Head or Marsh?
