Was Samu Kerevi really Australia’s best Super Rugby player this year?

By Bentnuc / Roar Pro

Samu Kerevi made the headlines this week for this whole mess about playing for Fiji in the next World Cup.

However, what caught my attention was that he was named Australian Super Rugby player of the year. This didn’t surprise me as he is Australia’s vice-captain and much-hyped by commentators and pundits.

However, a few comments from other readers of The Roar got me thinking. Most negative comments about Kerevi stem from his lack of passing and poor defence, while those most positive were about his power running game and all the metres he makes.

I have an idea in my head that Kerevi is one of our best players because of what I have been repeatedly told by commentators and the media. But is he? Or is he just a benefactor of a ‘get the ball to Kerevi’ game plan used by both the Reds and the Wallabies? This game plan hasn’t been effective for either team, so I thought I would have a look at how efficient Kerevi really was in attack and defence.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Much talked about is how Kerevi leads the Super Rugby competition in total run metres (1546), but here are a few key facts:

He’s very poor defensively and quite average in attack, but he leads the competition for the total number of runs by a mile with 193. Second place in the rankings from any position in the whole competition is a measly 168 runs by comparison. If you had the most runs in the tournament by that margin, you would hope to have the most metres!

I don’t think that total run metres or total line breaks or total missed tackles, for example, are great stats to gauge a player. Some people might say it indicates work rate, but it is highly influenced by team tactics. Averages work a lot better to show how efficient a player is at what they are doing.

(AAP Image/Dave Hunt)

Let’s see how Kerevi compared to other Australian Super Rugby centres.

Per cent of possessions passed

  1. Karmichael Hunt: 52 per cent
  2. Billy Meakes: 43 per cent
  3. Irae Simone: 40 per cent
  4. Samu Kerevi: 34 per cent

Average metres per run

  1. Hunt: 8.9
  2. Simone: 8.2
  3. Kerevi: 8.0
  4. Meakes: 7.3

Tackle completion percentage

  1. Hunt: 76 per cent
  2. Meakes: 74 per cent
  3. Simone: 74 per cent
  4. Kerevi: 65 per cent

Possessions per try or try assist

  1. Meakes: 23.6
  2. Kerevi: 28.4
  3. Simone: 31
  4. Hunt: 141

He doesn’t pass much, he’s not great with metres gained per run, he isn’t the most efficient at scoring and setting up tries and is very poor in defence. You could make the argument he isn’t even the most effective inside centre in Australian rugby, let alone the best player.

I don’t want to completely knock Kerevi as it’s not his fault he was named Super Rugby player of the year. Instead it’s the fault in how we judge players in Australia. To put it into perspective, Ngani Laumape, New Zealand’s Kerevi-style player, didn’t even make the All Blacks squad for the World Cup, yet his stats are far superior to Kerevi’s.

Ngani Laumape

The purpose of this article isn’t to bash Kerevi but to show that we look at the wrong attributes for players in Australia, which translates into poor results. We all remember Kerevi because he makes so many runs. His face is constantly on the coverage, with commentators usually touting another game running over 100 metres. We then make the assumption that he is a great player when in reality there might be much better team options at inside centre for the Wallabies and even the Reds.

Really? I agree Laumape should have gone, said so all along, but ALB...limp biscuit? Least look at the three critical matches: against SA, the eventual winners: “Anton Lienert-Brown: He doesn't get the credit he deserves for his attacking creativity. It was almost impossible for the Springboks defenders to get a hand on him when he went on a run. But while making runs he still had the awareness to look for team-mates in space. 8.” Vs Ireland “Anton Lienert-Brown: The All Blacks were all over Ireland's attacking patterns – well done Scott McLeod – and the in-form Chiefs man was as elusive as ever with ball in hand. Was this the birth of a great All Blacks' 12-13 combination?. 8.5 “ Vs England, where he was one of few that didn’t fail... “ Anton Lienert-Brown - 7 Grew into the game as it went on and tried his guts out, but wasn't able to continue his stellar form from the start of the tournament. Sixteen runs and 15 tackles with just one miss.” Hardly a limp biscuit level performance. It’s conjecture that Laumape would have had a better tournament than that.

The fact that Samu Kerevi was named Super Rugby player of the year illustrates clearly how bad Australian rugby teams are. I would hate to play outside the guy as I'd never see the ball. Ever. He can't pass, is a poor defender and yet he is the best rugby player of the season? (Shakes head in disbelief and wanders off muttering something about the good ol' days.)

I thought about Rodda, but Arnold has a stronger SR season and just couldn’t carry it through to the World Cup, while Rodda seemed a bit subdued during the year and then picked up at the end.

I disagree, but I will say he isn't used very well in Australia. The bloke has great feet, and great power... yet we constantly use him as a battering ram. Yes, he could work in his distribution.

Yeh he would be my pick too  Unselfish non-flashy player who does all the hard work for the team. He is also the best australian back in terms of pilfering ball too

Reading this article really puts Hunt's talent into perspective. It will be great to see how he goes this season for the Waratahs.

Thanks for the stats! But hes one of the best on the paddock Put Samu on the paddock with a coach who knows how to use him. Better stats will follow!

Laumape was an obvious choice. Dumb to not pick him

I think an important stat that was missed was ball retention. Samu made many runs but dropped the ball or gave a dodgy pass much too late. I believe that would be the telling stat other than defense that would really separate the centres

Yep, spot on. I'd say the Reds will improve on their 14th place from last year without him and so will the Wallabies. He will be 'a star' in the team he goes to in Japan and the team as a whole will struggle. If he doesnt fix his defence and pass more, he will hamper every backline he is in and will probably never play in a successful team his whole career

Hansen probably erred not selecting Laumape as ALB was a limp biscuit.

Yes because he was the most influential player on games the Reds played. Other players were more cogs in the machine. Kerevi was a game breaker.

Yes agree Bentnuc :) I agree Kerevi is not nearly as good as Laumape or Roberts was. And not as good as SBW, Goodhue, Barrett, Davies, Farrell, Tuilagi, de Allende, Kriel or either of the Ireland centres imo. Within Australia maybe O'Connor is a better centre too :)

Well said Waxhead. Could anyone see NZ, SA, ENG or Wales giving him a run on spot? Even Gatland realised the big running centre (roberts) with no other skills was not a successful gameplan. When he gave it away they had their best success under him. And again, look at laumape. A much better player than Kerevi in every facet and yet the ABs dont think that is the type of player that will bring them success yet we pin that style of player up as our best???

Kerevi would be a truly world class player if he had been in the NZ system since childhood. He is world class in one area....ball carrying tackle breaker. Rest of his game needs a good coaching team to see improvement. I am really sorry to see him leave the Reds, esp. with Petaia coming through.

Yeah, the "give it to Kerevi" game plan was getting embarrassing. I am kind of happy he is off doing something else to force the Reds to play more of a team game.
