Storm confirm exits for Croft, Scott

By Melissa Woods / Wire

Melbourne have confirmed the departure of Brodie Croft and Curtis Scott as they shake up their NRL playing list for 2020.

Halfback Croft is joining Brisbane while premiership centre Scott will link with Canberra after the Storm released them from their contracts.

Both players made their NRL debut for Melbourne in 2016 with Scott going on to play 48 NRL games, including nine in 2019, while Croft took his career tally to 39 appearances with 22 matches this year.

Croft fell out of favour with coach Craig Bellamy heading into this year’s finals series while Scott had a rollercoaster season due to injury and is believed to want to move closer to Sydney for personal reasons.

Test winger Josh Addo-Carr is also reportedly looking to escape his contract and return to Sydney, with the Wests Tigers ready to pounce.

But the Storm on Friday named Addo-Carr in their list of contracted players for 2020 and have said they expect him to remain in Melbourne.

With Scott’s departure and that of fellow centre Will Chambers, who is playing rugby in Japan, Melbourne can’t afford to lose another back particularly one of Addo Carr’s calibre.

Melbourne say they will make further changes to the roster before the New Year to ensure they are “salary cap compliant for the 2020 NRL season”.

He's a good signing Nat. Lord only knows you need some direction in the halves and this bloke should provide that to you. I don't think you understudy to Cronk for that long without picking something up. I just hope they give him a bit of time to settle in and sort things out, I got the impression that the Storm expected him to go full Cronk immediately and when that didn't happen he was on the outer. Smith certainly didn't seem to rate him. He could be a great long term prospect if given the chances early.

Hahaha yeah I can see it now. Bellamy musters his troops and reads out the roster with positional indications for next season then finally turns his iron gaze to Chambers and says "Are you still here??"

Mate, if that helps forget the previous 24wks, take all you can. I'm not quite there yet... :unhappy: If Fifita was to go anywhere I'd be happy if it was the Dogs. Our clubs have a proud history of sharing successful backrowers - just after their prime - for the Belmore brains trust to pay overs for. Eastwood was a premiership winner here. What'd you do to him?

Recent nude shenanigans on mad Monday getting them introuble & their Coffs Harbour sex scandal exploits as a team back in the day certainly put the Broncos in the shade cranky, our dodgiest was "St George can't play".

Wow! Attempting to belittle the Bulldogs "culture" as being inferior to that offered by the Broncos takes some chutzpah.

Wow, where have I been since the NRL Grand Final? I had no idea Will Chambers had left the Storm to play rugby in Japan. What is he playing in Japan, as an inside or outside centre?

I'm sorry to lose him, but, wish him well & hope that his move will be successful. Hope, too, that in the longer term, that the Storm won't regret releasing him. To me he is a far better half back than Hughes.

Geez ChrisPB, bronco supporters lament the gap since our last premiership in 2006 & the 58-0 aberration didn't make life any easier but Fifita wouldn't be ditching us & his young counterparts at Red Hill for a mob whose last premiership was 2004 unless he has a death wish. You need to get a finals berth first & the way you're running Josh Jackson into the ground, I'm not sure that's on the horizon. After his Bali ordeal, don't think the Bulldogs culture is what he needs. Belly laughs only take you so far, watching reruns of the block in September because your lot are on their end of season trip can get boring.

"...58-0 is an opportunity for you." ...damn, that scoreline never fails to give me (and the wife) a good belly laugh. Seriously, I think that Croft will be a good signing for the Broncos Nat. My real hope is that there's not too much pressure placed on your young and very promising pack - we want David Fifita in good nick when he joins us at Belmore! ;)

Geez, that Sandor Earl had better be a good player. The Storm have lost plenty of backs. I wouldn't mind seeing Smith at half.

Adam, we disagree about Val Holmes but my response elsewhere was unwarranted so apologise & trust that future footy banter is carried out in good humour, these sites provide more rounded & representative opinions than the Murdoch controlled fifth estate.

Like you Nat, I'd like Croft to give the Broncos some direction but hopefully there's not unreal expectations put on the young bloke while he fits into their program. I see they are going to lose Shibisaki to fit him in the 30 & that's a pity but you can't keep them all, I see Isaia Perese as a better centre than him in the long term. Wondering if Kahu just came back for the guaranteed contract payment, love his commitment but don't see where he fits if Bird is fit, Darius won't leave & Perese improves. Heard a whisper that the roosters were sizing up Staggs to replace Mitchell, no way the broncs can let him go, best centre we've had since Hodges (including jimmy the jet). Hope getting a 23 year old half doesn't cost us Dearden or Paix down the track.

Welcome Brodie. 58-0 is an opportunity for you. Your team is young but talented. They can produce average efforts with little direction and still make finals. The best leaders bring pout the best in his men. Lead them well.

Multiple exits at the Storm indicate something's about to happen, they seem extraordinarily thin in the backline unless they have a number of upcoming signings. Bellamy has always been able to turn journeymen into premiership players but that was with the benefit of having a core comprising Smith, Cronk & Slater, can it be done with just one survivor? If they don't chase Mitchell, you'd think they might renew an interest in someone like Milford who they flirted with years back. Could the rumours of Smith playing half be closer to fact, despite denials he's your classic old style game managing halfback type. Their best 17 is still a quality side but interesting to see what backup they get, a lot of spots vacant right now.

Croft has a huge challenge ahead of him to shake away the self doubt which surely crept in to his mind when he was demoted at the Storm instead of playing in the finals. Cameron Smith seemed to regard him with an element of contempt on the field which can't do much to boost your confidence. On the positive side , he'll be playing behind the Broncos pack which is a year older and wiser and provide plenty of chances for him.

They said he will be there in 2020 but didn't say anything about 2021. Says it all really. If he's homesick the club won't stand in his way

The Storm came out and said JAC isn't going anywhere. They indicated he refuted the claim, not that they denied it. I think it's a bit of a beat up. Possibly a ploy by the Tigers to scare Latrell a little.

"Test winger Josh Addo-Carr is also reportedly looking to escape his contract and return to Sydney, with the Wests Tigers ready to pounce." So the Tigers release a player, then years later when he's a star they try to re-sign him for millions more than it would have cost them to keep him in the first place. You're doing a bang up job there Tigers recruitment.
