Walker suspended for street fight

By News / Wire

South Sydney star Cody Walker has been hit with a two-game suspension after he was filmed kicking a man in the chest in a street fight in December.

The former State of Origin five-eighth will miss the first two games of the restarted NRL season and has been fined $15,000 (suspended for 12 months) after the footage appeared on social media this week.

Walker, 30, has five business days to respond but has already indicated he will not appeal any punishment handed down by the NRL’s integrity unit.

The NRL has also proposed a $20,000 fine for the club for failing to promptly disclose the incident to the integrity unit.

South Sydney will also have five days to respond to the breach notice and said in a statement they would consider their position.

Walker was not charged by NSW Police for his role in the incident in Casino in December, which was not reported to authorities at the time.

However he told coach Wayne Bennett, who did not pass on the information.

“The NRL today issued the South Sydney Rabbitohs with a breach notice in relation to an alleged failure to promptly disclose the incident involving Walker,” the NRL said in a statement.

“All clubs and club officials have a duty to report any incident which may lead to a breach of NRL rules, including suspected breaches, and NRL clubs are responsible for ensuring compliance.”

The NRL only became aware of the incident this week after Walker made a report to police over an alleged blackmail attempt for $20,000.

It is claimed there were threats to sell the video to media before it was then released online.

The Rabbitohs will be without Walker to restart their season against arch rivals Sydney Roosters on Friday night as well as a trip to Melbourne in Round 4.

It opens the door for rookie Troy Dargan to make his NRL debut in the halves alongside Adam Reynolds.

The club is also waiting for confirmation from the NRL’s biosecurity expert that James Roberts can return to the squad after he was released from a rehabilitation clinic on Thursday.

Roberts could be forced to undergo a 14-day quarantine before rejoining the Rabbitohs’ bubble, but the club is hopeful of having him available to play the Roosters.

Meanwhile, the NRL has upheld fines and suspended bans for Latrell Mitchell, Josh Addo-Carr and Tyrone Roberts-Davis for failing to comply with social distancing laws last month.

Curtis Scott gets zero suspension despite still having numerous charges hanging over his head while Walker is cleared by the cops and is suspended for two weeks. No problem with Walkers suspension but what's doing with Scott? Last reports had him entering a plea bargain , still can't find any reason to stand him down? The Raiders have two big games in the first two weeks and so do the Bunnies. The irony of the Scott situation is that when the NRL support a charged player like they have with Scott they take the heat out of the situation instead of throwing fuel on the fire with Dylan Walker and others in the past. Scott is alleged to have assaulted police officers including a female I believe but it's like the charges never happened. See how it can go if the NRL don't over react? Now just play god in a fair manner. Over to you Peter Valandy's .

Didn’t Souths also get done for not reporting the time they went to the US and tore up a bar a few years back...?

as you said Albo, there might have been a good reason why Cleary didn't mention the dancing. I'm no Fred Astaire, but Nathan might need more than a few lessons before he tackles Dancing With The Stars.

The 12 week suspension of Pearce was always a disgraceful sentence imposed for his petty crime of being caught on film being a bit of a goose with a skin full at a private party . But I think this was supposed to be a severe warning for a problem child, and this should have been a sound warning to the rest of the NRL players around the modern dangers of iPhones and social media. Seems it has all gone completely over all their heads. From what I hear, Pearce could have gone for a worse row in more recent times.

Not sure I see the difference between Bennett's lack of suspension for concealing this incident from the NRL Integrity Commission compared to Nathan Cleary's two weeks suspension for failure to add for the Commission that he did a stupid dance with those girls that he got caught with ? Maybe Wayne is just a better "dancer " ?

Time for Bennett to start thinking about retirement. It's a crying shame that sou ffs are tarnishing a stellar coaching career.

Last paragraph probably nails it, Paul.

Agree with you Paul. I was speculating on whether Bennett might at least have a scintilla of a moral excuse (and concluded he probably didn’t even have that). So yeah, bottom line he should have reported it.

I'm thing this is not Bennett's call to make, RR. As I understand it, ANY issue that smells even the slightest bit off, has to go to the NRL and THEY decide whether it warrants investigation and/or some form of sanction. Bennett didn't do that, so they fine the Club? Oh well, it's settled this problem but set a pretty ugly precedent, I'd have thought.

not so concerned about the fine Nat, but more about the lack of a suspension. If Walker's "crime" deserved 2 weeks, surely Bennett's worse crime deserved more? Walker did the right thing and reported it, but Bennett effectively tried to cover it up by not passing on the report. Perhaps this is another example of the NRL trying to down play issues, so they can focus on getting the season started.

I'm not sure the NRL could seperate Bennett from Souths could they? Souths may/should pass it through but I doubt Wayne lets that become public knowledge eitherway.

Yeah it certainly LOOKS like Bennett got special consideration from HQ, whether by fear or favour. His only explanation (afaik) is that there was no complaint or charge against Walker, but that seems just to be a variation on “it’s only wrong if you get caught”. Maybe it was a case of Walker acting in defence of another person (I don’t know) but Bennett also wouldn’t have known enough to say for certain it was defensible behaviour.

Why wouldn't it? At least Walkers incident has nothing to do with the Sharks unlike when a player commits a high tackle or other on field offence and is placed on report. They remain on the field to help defeat the team they fouled, only for future opponents to benefit from their later suspension.

Apparently the girl in the video asked for MP to kick her in the he chest , because her and the dog were having a dispute after one of the plants in the garden died, and she was of the opinion that if he was to kick her , the dog would go away . Unfortunately, Mitch was piissed and misunderstood. I’ve heard that the girl and the dog have since reconciled. See how easy it is for stoopid people to misinterpret what really happened.

I’m lead to believe the police are scouring the skies for the owl that delivered the blackmail note.

Whilst on field indiscretions are "graded" & penalties allocated accordingly, there have been a plethora of players offending "off field". Some have brought the game into disrepute while others have displayed a lack of common sense. The NRL have a thankless job in dealing with these miscreants & there will always be claims of inconsistency.

Greenberg reacted to media sentiment. Being the off season for Pearce didn't help because he become the national focus. Cody might be fortunate there are bigger things going on at the moment.

Does anyone know how the suspension assessment actually works? Pearce got 10 weeks for being a drunken goose. Walker gets 2 weeks for a fight but no charges. Josh and Latrell get fined for breaking laws and don’t get any suspension. NRL are really inconsistent.

Good point but then apparently Lartell is going to play well because he's now a poked bear.
