Tigers and Pies to kneel for Black Lives Matter movement

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Richmond and Collingwood players will take a knee before their AFL clash to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The gesture has been ticked off by both clubs and the AFL as the Victorian rivals relaunch the season after a three-month break at the MCG on Thursday night.

A player-led initiative, the Tigers and Magpies are determined to take a united stand for the worldwide cause against systemic racism.

“There were discussions (on Wednesday) and came from the playing group that both teams felt strongly about,” Magpies chief executive Mark Anderson told ABC Radio.

“Certainly both our clubs are endorsing and supportive of our players doing that and they’ll do that just before the bounce. We strongly support them doing so.”

A number of other AFL clubs, including Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Melbourne and Brisbane, have posted photos and messages on social media in support of the worldwide movement.

Black Lives Matters protests took place in the United States after the death in police custody of George Floyd which were followed in Australia last weekend and across the world.

In my experience the people that make the most noise often contribute least to a solution.

Where is the evidence of racism in the Floyd case? One of the coppers was Chinese/Korean and another Vietnamese. I'm sure if Chauvin had been posting on white supremacist sites, it would be in the public domain by now.

Any chance that South Australia could lead the way by using the Nicky Winmar gesture as a statement before the game tonight? The knee thing looks like the Floyd murder. It's a bad look and we need a State with a civil rights history to change the interpretation to something more nationally appropriate.

I don't understand why either, just hoping some good comes from it. "News" providers were certainly happy to have something other than the virus and lots of people off work might have contributed. No, I don't think so. But I do think if something like what happened to David Dungay was to happen again here there would be larger more immediate protests, hopefully we never know though.

Matto, wouldn’t ever disregard people’s comments because everyone has their own opinions. I just don’t understand why all these protests in countries all over the world only took place because of what happened in America, especially at a time when we are facing this COVID problem. If this happened to an indigenous person in Australia do you think there would be worldwide protests?

Col, feel free to disregard as I'm not 'qualified' to talk about anything but my trade. Anyway, by believing "Black Lives Matter" and objecting to people being needlessly murdered you're already in unison with the protesters. In reply to the rest of your comment, points to consider and hopefully make protests by Australians make more sense. - US protests are against "institutionalized racism" not a particular incident but a history of them. - Aus protests are because we have our own history to better understand and acknowledge. Plus current issues people are concerned about, it's not just to show solidarity with the same movement in America. - Justine Damond being shot by the policeman although tragic was not due to "institutional racism". She was never in custody and the officers trying to revive her after are two other big differences to George Floyd. Found this interesting too "Noor, who is Black, Muslim, and a Somali immigrant, is believed to be the only police officer in Minnesota ever to have been convicted for killing someone while on duty." Cheers, goodluck to your blues.

Taking a knee is nothing about Stacks culture. A man although a criminal and woman basher who was wrongfully murdered in another country is nothing to do with the AFL and they should apologise.

Where all in this together went further out the gate last weekend..Will this mob at protests be really happy when there is no police and they can return to there law. They are still killing and raping today and they are attacking Police. They put there elders at risk last week end and there saddling up again. Is it any wonder there lockup numbers are high. RESPECT.

My only issue with Taking the knee was it was a knee to the neck that caused George Floyd's death . Anything that makes all people aware that we still have a long way to go with indigenous people is a good think .IMO the common man isn't racist as evidenced by the 1967 referendum on giving Aboriginals the vote etch highest ever yes vote .We all , indigenous included , become complacent absorbed in the demands of our own lives and if any good can come from the tragic death of George Floyd maybe we all need to think more and do more.Me included.

I’m sick of tokenism; it’s everywhere on social media and pushed by large companies and sporting bodies everywhere. We are in the “thoughts and prayers” generation. It achieves nothing other alleviating people’s guilt and it provides a good excuse to shut down debate from others who have a different opinion on the way forward. It won’t go away but it won’t solve anything. We have tried the same thing for decades and it’s still a crap world for Aboriginal people yet we demand more of it. Why?

The killing of George Lloyd was disgusting and I agree with the saying ‘Black Lives Matter’, but all these demonstrations going on in Australia because of something that happened in America is way over the top. I don’t understand why the players are going to ‘take a knee’ for something that happened in another country. I don’t remember any demonstrations or players taking a knee when Justine Damond was shot by a policeman in America.

They sound harmless. Bigger Pelicans to worry about, like our prime minister that wants to pretend Australia has pristine past.

A QB? If your interested. Which you're cleary not. But you did spitball so maybe you are. His kneeling didn't go down to well for him. Now a few yrs later people in "entertainment" are losing their jobs for saying things like saying "ALM". There has been an shift. Chris lilly being canned is something similar. The people that boo this with "cancel culture" are in the same group as the NFL in 2016. The current NFL in 2020 has changed it's tune. Imo copying the merican footballl tactic is plenty symbolic with that background, however whatever they want to do to show support to the issue/protest is the KEY. Maybe lifting their shirts and pointing to their skin (should all of them do it?) or all the players pointing at Eddie would be more culturally appropriate for aussie rules? There are states in America that are very progressive, a lot less whingeing about protests in these states - you would like it.
