"Seibold has 12 players with Origin or Test experience": Benny blasts bumbling Broncos

By News / Wire

Super-coach Wayne Bennett has hit back at claims he left Brisbane in need of a rebuild as the NRL giants languish in second-last spot on the ladder.

Wayne Bennett has hit back at claims he left Brisbane in need of a rebuild and questioned Anthony Seibold’s ability to get the best out of the NRL’s struggling Broncos.

The most successful coach in premiership history on Tuesday broke his 18-month silence on the state of the Broncos after being dramatically sacked following the 2018 season by the club he’d guided to seven titles in 14 years.

The 70-year-old was livid after Broncos chairman Karl Morris on Sunday effectively blamed Bennett for the problems his successor Anthony Seibold finds himself in following five straight defeats since the competition’s resumption from the COVID-19 shutdown.

“We always thought it was going to take two years for (Seibold) to sort out the issues he was inheriting,” Morris told Nine Media.

It prompted a fierce counter-attack from Bennett.

“It was my intention to remain silent, but if the Brisbane chairman or any other person at the Broncos wants to make false assertions, I will set the record straight,” Bennett told News Corp.

“Assertions have been made as to the quality of the roster and the state I left the club in.

“I was prepared to coach there in 2019 and 2020 with the roster that we had at the time and I don’t think anybody in the game didn’t think we could be a top-four side.

“I’m correcting the record here. The chairman must be oblivious to the running of the club – if the roster was so bad, why would Anthony Seibold take the job?

“Seibold took South Sydney to a preliminary final in 2018 (before joining the Broncos). I have no doubt he thought he could win a premiership with this Broncos roster.

“No coach, particularly a young one, would take a job with an inferior roster to the one he is leaving. You just don’t do that.

“I did not coach or have a rundown football team at the Broncos.”

Bennett then chronicled the galaxy of stars at Seibold’s disposal.

“Let’s look at their current roster,” he said.

“Jamayne Isaako is a New Zealand Test player. Corey Oates is a Queensland player. Xavier Coates is a PNG Test player. Darius Boyd is a former Origin and Test player. Anthony Milford is an Origin player.

“Kotoni Staggs is a future NSW Origin player. Matt Lodge is a good NRL prop. David Fifita and Joe Ofahengaue are Queensland Origin players. Payne Haas made his debut for NSW last year.

“Jordan Kahu and Alex Glenn have played Test football for New Zealand and been in a grand final. Tevita Pangai Jr and Tesi Niu have played Test football for Tonga.

“Seibold has 12 players with Origin or Test experience.

“What are we talking here? We are being lost in the smoke and mirrors. There is a lot of talent there under Seibold but no-one is playing to their talent.”

"They weren’t out of form when Bennett was coaching them…" Really?? ...Back in 2007, a Wayne Bennett coached Broncos team ,in round 25 against Parra 68 -22 loss.....following week, semi final against Storm...40 - 0..... Broncos had 11 State of Origin/Test Players in those teams!!! The old hypocrite should keep his nose out of Broncos business and his mouth shut!!

Yep, pretty selective reasoning from Bennett as usual, but let's put them in perspective. Niu & Coates are kids who made their 'test' squads to make up numbers, not on experience. Fifita & Haas are rookie SoO reps who got picked on potential, Ofahengaue has been a bench player for years, Kahu hasn't been available yet in 2020 with Bird also out for the season. Pangai Jnr, Glenn & Lodge have missed more games than they've played, Staggs has been injured or suspended for all but one game since the resumption, Oates has had ongoing illness & injury all season so that leaves Isaako, Boyd & Milford in the mix since the season started & each of them has struggled. Wayne has to accept at least some joint responsibility for the big contracts Boyd, Milford & Bird are on. No matter how much he protests, he's left another club with salary cap problems by his recruitment strategy, same as the Knights and Dragons. Compare the experience of the current side available to what Bennett had in 1999 when the Broncos lost 8 and drew 1 of their first 10 games before scraping into the final eight. He had Walters, Tallis, Webke, Thorn, Campion, Ryan, Walker, Renouf & a host of experienced backups including a young Lockyer when Langer quit mid-season. Not exactly comparing apples with apples Wayne!

ja ja klazo and Nat lol yes I do agree but, we don't care, whatever Wayno does at the Bunnies is better than whatever Seibs is doing at the Broncs! It’s not perfect that is for sure but this year we will finish much higher up than the Broncs (just like last year) and in 2021 the Bunnies will be right up there. I've given up this year they are a bottom 8 side or maybe “????” they will make the 8, let’s see because it’s not looking good with LM’s topsy turvy form and allot of the others that are playing like 6 year olds week in and week out! That last game against the Panthers was a shocker and I really just couldn’t believe what I was seeing and watching, not that he other games wont the same, the Bunnies are going from really average to a complete and utter shocking mess, lets see how they pan out???

The problem as I see Seibold and some of the bronco stars share the same player manger ............ I’m not against players and managers getting the best deal out there for their clients , I believe in these guys getting money as much as they can before their body gives it away ...... But I suspect that when these young broncos signed contracts up there in Brisbane they wanted to be coached by Wayne Bennet who is idolised by many a teenage league talent in Brisbane ....... So now they have a coach who didn’t put this list together , just realised the fanatical support the broncos have and is now lost senior players due to overblown contracts and bad list management ......... Of course you’re going to lose games , the broncos will always bounce back just be aware of the player manager and their influence in moving players and coaches this is the real problem don’t know the issues

Say what? Not sure you’re understanding what I’m saying. Bennett had a similar experience of being at the bottom of the ladder and he had a far superior roster with young players coming through. Croft is not Langer, Isako is not Lockyer, TPJ is not Tallis, Lodge is not Webcke and Boyd is not Renouf yet the Broncos were in a state of disarray under Bennett’s coaching at one time with young players. If they haven’t won a game in the next 5 weeks and finish 16th then yes they need to look at asking Seibold some Questions.

Possibly my least favored club in the comp is the Broncos for various reasons that aren't that interesting. My opinion of their current situation however is similar in a way to my take on the mighty Eagles a couple of years back. The Eagles were the laughing stock of the comp and I had no problem with people laying the boot in and many were actually sympathetic to the plight of the no hopers from the Northern beaches. I had a different take because I had a look at the roster and saw a core of players who I believed had a decent chance of making a serious tilt at the title much quicker than the punters believed possible. Not many backed my view including Eagles fans. Unfortunately I believe the Broncos are in a much stronger position to challenge for a title in the next few years than lots of other teams. I look at the roster and the future rather than the present and the Broncos are very close to being a real menace. Send a couple of plodders out to pasture and capture the right player in the halves or have someone come good and even under the current coach it is very likely that they come good quickly. I hope I'm wrong to be honest.

Well that’s sort of the point I’m eluding to? Does history ever repeat? Bennett did something in 1999? He got his most accomplished player (Langer) to realise he was mentally done. Langer was cooked and light years above Boyd in legendary status. Mind you Bennett was blessed with a much stronger squad with several future leaders in Tallis, Webcke and Walters. Is Boyd willing to do what Wayne asked Alfie to do? When Fafita, Stagg, Turpin return will a close win turn the confidence for the youngsters into a streak of wins against easier teams? If the Broncos beat the Warriors are they in a better position than say my Cowboys? If they get on a role with some quality players returning in the next few weeks are they back in the top 8? Matt i reckon young talented rugby league players are like tail end batsmen with a good eye. The longer they stay out there the more they start hitting. They middle a few against some average bowling and suddenly they get confident. A of a sudden they rate themselves and suddenly when the best bowlers come back on they start hitting plenty more boundaries. Wasn’t Steve Smith a leg spinner? Be patient Broncos because they might come good very quickly. The worse thing to do is panic and turn on each other at this moment IMO.

Paul, you are correct about News Corp. My understanding is that News Corp owns 69% of the Broncos, and that there are about 37000 members. That's a lot of dollars made from poker machines and serving steaks and XXXX. I've been to the Broncos club quite a few times over the years. In fact, I was a member of the club's predecessor which was the Wests Old Boys & Juniors Leagues Club. There's no other club like this for miles around. What I've rambled on to saying is that I have the impression that the club business would probably be successful even if there was no football team because Maranta et al did a wonderful job of establishing the club. Everyone in Brisbane knows about it. The footballers are not exactly a sideshow because Broncos home games draw very good crowds. But has the team been the main focus of the board? Maybe.

I think good on him. So many people have been shifting the blame to him for the Broncos poor form. He has come out and stated some facts.

" For sure a couple of years to turn the roster into a premiership contender…particularly with the money tied up in Bird, Milford and Boyd" This may be true however those players should be trying a whole lot harder than they are. The Titans have long been a basket case and aren't exactly over flowing with talent but you get the feeling every week that they are there to give of their best. I am not sure I can say the same about Brisbane.

I do agree, Bennett has the right to respond if he is being blamed. Seibold & the Broncs are looking for excuses but that team they have isn't such a bad team and it isn't such a young one either. There are younger less experienced outfits in this comp that are performing a whole lot better than the Broncos are. They need to stop looking for the quick fix and buckle down to some old fashioned hard work. If any one is to blame here it is Anthony Seibold. The simple fact is that he isn't a first grade coach.

I wouldn't go crowing too soon. He's loaded your squad with blokes they didn't want. However, this conversation isn't new around Redfern is it? How many coaches have Souths burned through since re-introduction?

If I was a bunnies fan, I wouldn't be too impressed by this. Wayne has a myriad of problems with his Souths teams to sort out. Souths look absolutely useless this year. Luckily, I'm not a bunnies fan. I'm a chooks fan and our coach doesn't pay much attention to what other coaches do and he certainly doesn't buy into cheap slanging matches. Just minds his business and collects premiership rings.

And for the second time: And your point in quoting a 21 year old situation? And your point in not noting that they then won 11 in a row to make the 8? And won a premiership the following year?

Totally agree. He looks utterly lost and probably the only reason he hasn’t been sacked is because the board will look like morons for giving an unproven, more or less rookie, coach a FIVE year contract
