Matera stood down over social media posts

Pablo Matera has been stripped of the Argentina rugby captaincy after “discriminatory” tweets resurfaced, while two other players have also been stood down.

Just weeks after becoming a national hero as he inspired the Pumas to their first win over the All Blacks, Matera is under fire for tweets he allegedly made between 2011 and 2013 relating to Bolivian and Paraguayan domestic staff and black people.

The Argentina Rugby Union issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the comments and announcing the sacking of Matera, as well as veteran lock Guido Petti and hooker Santiago Socino, before the Sydney clash with Australia.

“The Argentine Rugby Union strongly repudiates the discriminatory and xenophobic comments published by members of the Los Pumas team on social media and meeting as an emergency, the Board of Directors resolves:

“In the first place, revoke the captaincy of Pablo Matera and request the staff to propose a new captain to the Board of Directors.

“Second, suspend Pablo Matera, Guido Petti and Santiago Socino from the national team until their disciplinary situation is defined.

“Third, open a disciplinary case to the three players mentioned, which will be handled by the disciplinary commission of the Argentine Rugby Union.”

Matera has closed his Twitter account and made his Instagram account private but issued an apology before he did so.

“I had a tougher time. I am very ashamed. Apologies to all those who were offended by the atrocities I wrote,” Matera posted on Instagram.

“At that moment I did not imagine who I was going to become. Today I have to take charge of what I said 9 years ago.

“I’m also sorry to my team and my family for the moment they are going through my actions and thanks to the people who love me for their support.”

Matera delivered a huge performance at flanker in the Pumas’ historic win over New Zealand, which shocked the rugby world given their limited preparation due to COVID-19.

They backed it up with a 15-15 draw with the Wallabies last month and face the Wallabies again on Saturday night.

Shocked Wallabies prop Allan Alaalatoa was told of the news at a press conference and said Matera’s absence would be a “huge loss” for Argentina.

While he didn’t know the content of the tweets he predicted the Pumas would rally at Bankwest Stadium on Saturday night.

The statement by Ugo Monye neatly underscores the problems caused by the UAR approach (and that of RA, CA and others). Without giving any form of support or avenue of explanation for the players UAR has acted unilaterally to appease whoever they are trying to appease. In response to that over reaction other elements (whoever they are, and including the touring party) protest and UAR reverse their position. Now UAR just looks stupid, spineless and weak. The players in question still have had no right of reply or platform on which they can properly explain their actions (or fail to explain them). Just like CA and RA before them they have managed to offend everyone without achieving anything.

I've never come across a subhuman quote INT. There is a well documented speech in 1858 during a senate campaign where he attempted to defend himself against the charge of being for racial equality. Under attack he basically said if there had to be a superior race he would prefer it be the white race. That would hardly be an unusual position for the 1800's even for an educated and enlightened man like Abraham Lincoln. So in his own time he was being attacked by political opponents for being perceived as for racial equality, but because he didn't hold the same views as someone in 2020 he is a terrible human and his singular and only motive for freeing slaves was economic... I think that's a ridiculous position to take. To take a few comments and then completely disregard the totality of everything else they have done in their lifetime. There is an echo to the situation that Matera finds himself in today. A situation we both agree is somewhat unfair to the individual concerned.

Someone who identifies as on the same team Moa. Someone who thinks the same way . In this case someone with left wing/progressive views. The thought pattern is along the lines of "well they're on our team so they didn't actually mean what they said". As opposed to "they're conservative so they must be evil, bad people..."

As an Argentinian, I'm embarrassed by this whole situation. It's similar to the conduct of a relative we're ashamed of with their behavior. I am pleased with the attitude of most Australian supporters of this chat, who have been able to understand that he was an 18-year-old boy. Many of us at that age did stupid things that we regret and would love to erase from our memory. I hope that in tomorrow's match I won the best team, if they are the Pumas I will be happy, if it is Australia will be deserved. We feel very good to be able to participate in this competition, which in my view is top international. Thank you Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Of course there is no porve, but whom will dig year after year of posts, haters. The first one to bring a comment after the game was a plotitians related to actual administaration, Anibal Fernandez, and with top rank when CFKirchner was in power, he stated that the only PUMAS that were moving were the ones wore all along his career Diego Maradona... do believe that words of Pablo Matera after the first game against AB were not liked by authorities in Argentina, not a single comment or congratulation came from authorities. It is a clear thing that rugby our end is considered payed by an oligarchy, country side people are considered by them as well oligarchs, when it is well known that it is not any longer like at the beg of XX century. It is also funny to listen to actual politians talking about poor people and the problems they are going through when no one lives in those areas but in the best of Buenos Aires. Can keep going on and on, but no politician and not even the president can make if yu dig into his tweets of just a couple of years ago...

Oh for goodness sake. The tweets were made seven years ago. How dumb were we as teenagers? Not much room for regret, reform, or forgiveness these days. Does anyone believe that they have never done anything shameful in their lives - especially when young and loaded up with testosterone? A certain Jesus Christ made a comment on that subject.

@ozziedude Of course. Anybody on the right side of the political spectrum would have to be. Only leftists and Marxists wouldn't. BTW, Folau did nothing wrong all he did was speak the word of God! What happened to Folau was more evidence of creeping Marxism infiltrating and undermining Western Democracies! If you want to see more evidence, just look at what it has done to and how it stole the US election for Biden!

Carlos  same with me they won't put up my replays to moaman !! Moaman asked me a question I only posted about my background to give a view where I was comming from nothing offensive at all. They very selective what they put up I thought it was open forum, where others have unlimited access and try and dominate.anyway I'm for the underdog always and have publicly stated I have backed all 3 teams in this championship, really think pumas have been hamstrung (meaning unable to move forward). That's my spew/rant baaaaa

Last minute: UAR has lifted the sanctions again Matera, Petti and Socino. No further information was given. A lot of former Pumas and the clubs where the players started their careers voiced their disapproval of the sanctions. I just posted about the need for professionals running professional sports in Argentina... Stranger than fiction this 2020!

Yes, I was just speaking with my mom, she always seems to know stuff, that she heard the team was in rebellion against Ledesma and Loffreda and threatened to not show up to play. I don’t know if it’s gossip over in Australia where she is or truth. But it seems plausible.

UAR tried for many years to implement a hybrid system. Amateur rugby locally, Professional team/ teams playing overseas and bringing much needed dollars to a country savaged by bad governments, corruption and double standards. Professional sport, professional officials. It is similar in all sports in Argentina. People without experience in professional sports ruling the lives and destinies of athletes. I does not work. Picking a captain for a national team should not be taken lightly. Once the decision is made, after going over potentially controversial issues from the past of the player, the Union should protect and support their captain 100%. Adding a little more context, a couple of days ago, a group of the most well known published Argentina rugby reporters sent UAR a letter complaining about the fact that for some months now, they haven't been able to be part in the press conferences of the national team. They are required to email their questions, there is not warranty of which or how many of the questions are going to be answered, and of course, no re questioning. The journos promise to cover this last game with Australia, but if things don't change, they are not going to work with UAR anymore. Again, double standards. They keep saying that they want the sport to grow in the country, be more inclusive and open, yet they don't give the reporters that cover the sport the tools to work...

The directors of UAR are the ones that should go. By the way the players may have something to do since they were backingMatera and Co.

By the way, the UAR removed the sanctions to the players. This is a sad circus.
