Heritier Lumumba slams Collingwood's response to racism report

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Heritier Lumumba has labelled Collingwood’s response to a damning report that uncovered systemic racism at the AFL club as “cowardice” and “delusional”.

An independent investigation – commissioned by the club’s board last year after consistent and long-standing allegations from Lumumba – found Collingwood guilty of a toxic culture of racism.

Lumumba, who starred in the Magpies’ last premiership in 2010, feels vindicated by the findings of the report after first raising the alarm on concerns at Collingwood in 2013.

But the 34-year-old believes Collingwood have learned nothing from the scandal after watching president Eddie McGuire at a club press conference on Monday addressing the findings.

McGuire opened the conference with a statement describing the release of the report as a “day of pride” and claimed the club was not racist.

“What I saw was a clear case of cowardice,” Lumumba told ABC Radio National on Tuesday.

“It was a clear case of a football club that is delusional.

“If that’s the way Collingwood wants to address (the release of) an independent report, that it did not want out there.

“I have been asking Collingwood football club since late last year when I knew they had the report, I have been asking them for it, but it was not given to me.

“It was actually sad I had to receive that from media sources.”

Lumumba says he does not hold McGuire “solely responsible” for the Collingwood’s culture but believes the long-serving president needs to take more accountability as leader of the club’s board.

“A lot of the responsibility falls on him. The performance he gave (on Monday) was cowardice,” Lumumba said.

“They keep pointing to courage and they’re the ones who are leading the charge (against racism); no they are absolutely not the ones leading the charge.

“It was simply living up to not taking accountability, not accepting the fact that the football club has caused serious harm, as the report says.

“I really don’t know where there really is to go now for the Collingwood football club and for Eddie McGuire.”

Lumumba chose not to participate in the club commissioned review but the ‘Do Better’ report’s authors said there needed to be a serious investigation into his claims.

The 223-game AFL player said he was tired of explaining his experiences to Collingwood people and being met with “defensiveness”.

“I had endured all these years of being attacked and I’ve been so open and forthright with my personal testimony that I experienced at Collingwood,” he said.

“I thought there was absolutely no way that at a review or any sort of investigation would be conducted in good faith.”

Cone of Silence , as I have stated I have referred to him by both names and am only surprised that people have focused so much on it.I hope in the fullness of time Hereriter Lumumba / Harry O ' Brien and some other non white skinned people are involved in the development of a a policy to combat racism .

Look up who made the comment and took the actions to which you refer in 2021 and you'll see Heritier Lumumba.

You use the words "educated" and "inteligent" (sic.) as if they are insults. If a man changes his name in a way to state clearly that he no longer wishes to take an anglicised identity, then we should respect it. It is not a irrelevant matter. (Also, the correct spellings are "divisive" and "intelligent" - sorry if that makes me sound too "educated" and "intelligent").

Firstly, he has chosen to revert to another name, and you are commenting on his actions NOW in not particopating, not when he played for Collingwood, so I'm surprised YOU'RE surprised that your use of his anglicised name has provoked a reaction. Secondly, Collingwood's failure to act in a timely manner has resulted in Heritier's claim going to the courts, which would make it legally inadvisable for him to participate in the report, so he has acted wisely. Thirdly, the fact that this report is so damning even without Lumumba's participation is evidence enough of the deep malaise that has existed in this club for so long. That alone is grounds for Lumumba to reflect on how consistent the report is with his experiences, and how typical President McGuire's response is to the reactions that Lumumba said he received all along. Fourthly, since when did non-participation in an exercise mean that one is precluded from commenting on it? If this was the rule, a lot of journalists would be out of a job.

I accept Boos most recent comments on the issue. Sure I may have been nitpicky but at least we are clear on where things stand. After all that is the point of the forum - to debate ideas right? If I were to write something perceived to be off colour, I'd welcome a discussion on it.

Probably the same justification as a Cat Stevens fan still calling Yusif Islam Cat Stevens. There is nothing in it except an opportunity for self righteous keyboard commandos looking to find a devisive issue. Maybe it makes them look educated or inteligent but right now we are going nowhere except splintering.

I am not a Collingwood fan, but I do appreciate Eddie's passion for his club. I would love know who did the review as that is often a major factor in the result.

Like most you have all read too much into me referring to him as Harry O' Brien but if that's what your focused on so be it .Personally , I would have preferred him to contribute to the report as I understand it a report written by white middle class men exploring the treatment of non white people at the club as Gilbert McAdam said on Marngrook ask us we know .No doubting Collingwood has a racist history ( we can all recall the incidents over the years ) but IMO the AFL is also Polly Farmer is the only indigenous coach I can name ( from memory Mark Williams and Gerald Needham aren't ) .So if only the solutions of White middle class men are proffered ( I know Jodi on the Collingwood board is indigenous ) we aren't solving the problem merely addressing it .

Not at all , his greatest achievement was definitely exposing entrenched racism at Collingwood as reflected by Allan McAllister, Eddie McGuire , the crowd treatment of Nicky Winmar , etch etch .I would have preferred him to contribute to directly to the review and given he was called chimp there is no dispute it was a racist remarks as his recommendations probably would have surpassed all others .There is no doubt the game is discriminatory the only indigenous coach I can think of is Polly Farmer , ( i don't think Neesha m or Williams are indigenous ) so that needs to change .What matters now is the way forward and I hope it's not all decided by white middle class men and that is where Hereriter Lumumba has a role to play as does from an indigenous perspective Gilbert McAdam who IMO is an excellent commentator and a great ambassador for his people .

Interesting name Cassius. His parents didn't do anything by halves and apparently were keen students of history and pop culture. His full name was Cassius Marcellus Clay, same as his dad. His brother's name was Rudolph Valentino Clay (later Rahman Ali). His mum's name was also outstanding, Odessa O'Grady. A pity they didn't have more kiddies so they could have really gone to town.

"I referenced his name to illustrate what it was when he achieved something just as Hereriter Lumumba was Harry O’ Brien for the most part at Collingwood " - so your implication is that he only achieved something at Collingwood? That's a tad myopic isn't it? He managed to get some sort of an apology out of Eddie after all ;)

You referred to him as Harry O’ Brien in reference to what he should do now. That is not his name now. Whatever your intent, to say you used O'Brien because that was his name when he played sounds disingenuous. Similarly if he has a sex change and was now a she, would you say "he should do xzy today" because she was a he at Collingwood? To answer your question, don't write irregardless. It is a nonsense amalgamation of two words.

Adults take into account others abilities; they don't belittle them for it. Whilst you are riding your high horse you're trampling someone else. That's poor form.

I said it was a proud day for Collingwood, and I shouldn’t have.” “Under the pressure of the day, the use of the word proud was wrong". "I did not, I did not mean we were proud of past incidents of racism and the hurt that had caused". “It’s been interpreted widely that way and I regret that deeply.” Eddie regrets being misinterpreted. The "apology" was worse than the press conference mess. As if anyone actually interpreted his comments that way anyway.

Props to Lumumba, it took alot of guts to come out and be the face of this against one of the biggest clubs in the land. Collingwood has been the first to have the light shone upon them, will others follow suit? it makes sense, to root out any underlining racial problems clubs in the AFL have and have them permanently put in the back mirror.

As I have stated Nics , I referred to Hereriter Lumumba as Harry O' Brien because he played mostly under this name at Collingwood for you or others to deduce anything other than that is ridiculous.Like other posters are you implying I'm racist because I used the name he played under at Collingwood .

Is he a Collingwood player now? What's your justification for calling him by his old name? You are clearly referring to his present conduct re participation in the review

McGuire has presided over a culture of bullying, racism and homophobia, he has to step down or be sacked. To not understand how stating it was a "day of pride" to be presenting a report showing systemic racism in their club would come across shows he does not have the intellectual capacity to run a modern organization. That alone should have his job in real danger.

Adults rightly tend to avoid debating with people who's literacy is squarely lodged in the child category.
