Looking forward to the Tahs’ season? Nah, yeah

By Hugh_96 / Roar Pro

Strangely, despite everything (including COVID) I think I am looking forward to the Tahs’ season.

I could reflect on all the negative issues associated with the Tahs. For example, I was keen to head to the trial game in Bowral but that was cancelled, my low expectations of how they will perform this season, the ongoing shocking recruitment strategy of the tight five over the last who knows how many years. Maybe I can get caught up in the obviously dysfunctional front office at the Tahs, how the state with the most players cannot get it together or how they are obviously financially strapped.

Plus I could ponder why they let certain players go. I could wonder about the rumours that the players are not on board with coach Rob Penney. And sure, looking at the squad there are a few players I have never heard of and the average age is around 12.

That is an exhausting level of negativity of why not to look forward to the coming season. However, my philosophy is that the glass is always half full and my concerns over rugby and the Tahs are seriously first-world problems.

So instead of wallowing in self-pity, I thought it is better to consider the positives – so with some reference to the teachings of Tony Robbins, the Dalai Lama and a few positive affirmations mantras I relooked at the season ahead.

First up, I’m pretty excited about the change to Channel 9/Stan Sport. It is great (and weird) to see rugby being promoted on FTA TV as part of the Channel 9’s calendar of sporting events for the year. In addition, seeing Drew Mitchell chatting rugby on The Today Show. It’s already a different season.

While the squad is a mix of youngsters, journeymen and a sprinkling of Wallabies, the youngsters should be fun to watch. There are going to be some brain explosions, a few ‘why, oh why’ moments which will pain me, but just hoping they can play some exciting rugby and jag a win or two.

From a biased perspective, it’s terrific to see a couple of Marlins players in the squad and hope to see them get a run.

Nothing against the Rob Penney, but I have always been a fan of assistant coaches Chris Whittaker and Matt Cobain, so I will look forward to their insights during the season.

In the old Eddie Murphy/Dan Aykroyd movie Trading Places , there was a great line at the end: “Looking good Billy Ray.”

“Feeling good, Louis”.

While the home jersey hasn’t changed much (#skyblue), I can get around the Argentinian-inspired away jersey – so we will at least look good and feel good.

Sports opinion delivered daily

From a completely irrelevant perspective, the Tahs have an eclectic mix of sponsors (or partners) which naturally includes a pie, beer and rum. I have to say I am a fan and regular consumer of the beer sponsor and while I have never heard of the rum sponsor, I look forward to giving it a go to support the team.

Lastly, the season will be great for Tahs supporters’ personal development, the season will be an exercise in building resilience, positive thinking and knowing the sun will come up to tomorrow mentality.

Despite a touch of cynicism and sarcasm, in a strange way I am looking forward to the season. Maybe it’s like getting hammered by a huge wave – it hurts, you nearly drown but it was fantastic and out you go again.

Tahs’ season will be the same, a lot of pain, almost giving up and (hopefully not too many) hammerings but we will get out there again.

Wow. Two of the best Tahs players in 2020 and you say that? Objectively, what were your issues with their performances?

He's in the 200kg bench press club apparently. But he considers Tizanno to be the strongest in the Tahs "pound for pound".

Yeah they'll definitely be better without their 2 best performing and most effective forwards from 2020...

He's definitely a big strong bloke, we haven't had a lock like him in a very long time.

Yeah it was poor. Tizzano definitely didn't hurt his chances at all. I haven't seen Porecki play but given his 56 caps in English Premiership, hopefully he has a ruck focus. HJH isn't bad in that area. Thought Wood showed some promise (although I suspect he is out of Penney's plans, love to be proven wrong).

Got to interview him for my pod the other week (out now, Pick and Drive Rugby! :D ) and I was mightily impressed with the positivity Harro brought. We were honest and suggested 2021 would be a struggle with the exodus of talent, but he was seeing it as a positive as much of the pressure was off them and they could buy into the direction of Penney and perform to their best.

The ruck was a constant issue on Friday night. We couldn't secure our own ball, and seemed to have very little on-ball presence until Tizzano took to the field. I'm fairly worried, especially considering that nobody in the starting pack is a renowned ruck money (aside from Tizzano, who is unproven at this level).

I'm getting fairly excited with Jack Whetton. Seems to have the musculature and breeding (in NZ rugby) to fill that role well. At least, he's more exciting in my mind than Caird and Sykes.

Hugh, not sure the Tahs are undersize. Horton is fairly light but if he doesn’t throw better than he did the other night he might lose out to Porecki who is 108kg. We could easily see: ‏‏‎ ‎ 1. Bell – 121kg 2. Porecki – 108kg 3. Johnson-Holmes – 111kg 4. Caird – 116kg 5. Whetton – 121kg 6. Swinton – 112kg 7. Tizzano – 98kg 8. Dempsey – 108kg ‏‏‎ ‎ That is an 895kg pack – not undersized at all.

Agree the pack is a concern again this season, especially in terms of size. But as I mentioned I did look for positive thinking references for example “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” ― The Dalai Lama. So maybe the pack can still make a difference.

I have to hang in with the Tahs through thick and thin It's a pity that the Tahs will be struggling this season just as they get onto FTA TV, poor timing for the Tahs and rugby in general.

Thought the Tahs went better in the trial than I expected. Trouble is that for the first fixture against the Reds, the Reds will roll out about 10 Wallabies.

@Hugh I like your optimistic attitude  And while I'm one of the disaffected Tahs fans who now supports the Brumbies, I really do hope Tahs can rise from dust and be a hugely successful franchise. Reality is - Aussie Rugby needs a strong Tahs team.

Just a trial Gazza? I say, au contraire. What that was, was a Waratahs win in February. We all know what that means........We are going to be the Champions!!!!! Woohoooooooo!!!

The trial against the Reds was just that, a trial. It will a tough year for the Tahs as it is a young enthusiastic team that is small upfront. For me the worry is the pack . Finally a solid half back and reserve half back. The backline is quick in attack but has big gaps in defence. Harrison will be targeted. Maddocks at his best is a game winner; that long kick for the 50:22 in the trial was a beauty. Hopefully the hit out at the trial will be helpful to show the team is a capable one; the potential is there.

That maybe the case but I'm holding onto the positives, why wallow in the negativity. Not sure the squad is terrible but sure there are gaps and a lack of depth in some positions. The great thing is its not compulsory viewing, if it causes you pain and angst you don't have to watch it.

Guessing you aren't a Hoops fan. Interesting comments by Rennie in The Australian about the players including Hooper, did you disagree with them?

Nevertheless, in a game they both wanted to win more than most others, Tahs lifted and Reds didn’t. Changed the Tahs season
