Bone bruising forces Franklin out for up to a month

Sydney superstar Lance Franklin has suffered a fresh injury setback that will force him to miss three to four weeks of AFL action.

Lance Franklin’s stop-start AFL season has been halted by a knee injury that will further test Sydney’s depth and finals ambitions.

Franklin, having only recently returned to full fitness after battling a series of soft-tissue injuries that restricted him to one AFL game in 21 months, will spend up to a month on the sidelines because of bone bruising.

The superstar suffered his latest setback during the third quarter of the Swans’ first loss of the season.

The four-time Coleman medallist played on after his clash of legs with GWS defender Connor Idun at the SCG, but felt sore on Sunday and follow-up scans delivered some bad news.

Sydney coach John Longmire has also confirmed that in-form ruckman Tom Hickey will be out of action for six to eight weeks because of his knee injury, also suffered in the derby defeat.

The Swans have proven they can play well without talismanic forward Franklin, most notably and recently when they upset reigning premiers Richmond at the MCG.

Equally, Longmire knows coming weeks will test his third-placed side’s stocks.

Dane Rampe (broken finger) and Isaac Heeney (broken hand), who were both enforced omissions for the derby, and Hickey had also been pivotal in a promising 4-0 start to 2021.

“If you want to take that next step in your development as a team, you need to deal with injuries to key players,” Longmire told reporters on Monday.

“Sometimes it’s a few key players.

“It’s just part of what AFL footy is … you have to roll with the punches.

“We’ve some options there (to replace Franklin and Hickey). Some experience and some youth.

“Form underneath is really important. Because when you get your opportunity, you want to take it with both hands – help us be competitive and help your case, in terms of playing footy.”

Midfielder James Rowbottom is on track to return from his knee injury against Gold Coast on Saturday, while Hayden McLean and Callum Sinclair headline the other leading candidates for call-ups.

Sydney will be widely expected to defeat the Suns, but ensuing clashes with Geelong and Melbourne shape as more exacting challenges.

Franklin’s earliest possible comeback game is likely to be in round nine against Collingwood, although the 34-year-old is determined to prove club medicos wrong.

“He reckons it’ll be two (weeks on the sidelines). We’ve said three to four, so that probably gives you an idea of where the discussions go,” Longmire said.

“We’ll see how he goes.

“He’s alright, I just had a chat with him.

“Unfortunately it was just a collision-type injury that you can’t do much about. That’s what happens, hopefully it’s only a few weeks and he gets back going again.”

Chad Warner on the other hand seems to get stronger each week.

Correct. Bone bruising is quite common.

Could not agree more. Hickey has been outstanding, I can't remember a time when the Swans have had two fit ruckmen on the ground at the same time. The young blokes will stand up forward but how do we get it to them if we don't win the ball around the ground.

Interesting times for the Swans. They should have won on the weekend but lost. It is a slippery slope... Dew will get his side up for them.. it is season-defining game for GC. The other element is the 1st years do need a rotated game off.. injuries stop that.. I think McDonald looks like he needs a week off. Campbell as well.. Ironically Gulden.. is probably close to the first man picked each week. At this stage looks unstoppable.. reminds me a little of Joel Selwood when he first started.. just a bull out of the gate day 1.

Incorrect. Bone bruise When you think of a bruise, you probably picture a black-and-blue mark on your skin. That familiar discoloration is the result of blood leaking beneath the surface of your skin after you’ve injured a blood vessel. A bone contusion, or bone bruise, happens when you have a small injury on the surface of a bone. The discoloration appears as blood and other fluids build up. A fracture, on the other hand, involves damage to a deeper area of bone. It’s possible to bruise any bone, but it’s more likely to happen to bones that are close to your skin’s surface.

Bones don’t bruise. Bruising is a skin and muscle condition.

Ouch. That hurts. Bud is definitely feeling his age.

It would be great if Buddy can reach 1000 goals before injuries and age end his career... he most likely won't be able to achieve it this season if he's out for a month.

I thought the same thing. Anyone who has ever been the junior in their work knows the feeling. When the boss is on hols for two weeks, the step up is amazing for the confidence.

McDonald seems to have got lost getting out of the way of Budweiser. Not having to worry about him could help him settle into his game again.

I actually think Hickey out for the next two months is the bigger blow. He's been absolutely fantastic for the Swans since he's joined. Sinclair and McLean would seem to be the obvious replacements. And for all the hype McDonald has been the invisible man the last couple of games - he looks like he's badly in need of a rest for a week or two.

Injuries starting to mount up for some teams. Those in top 8 need to hold on over next 6 week period or so. Swans perfect example.
