Western United and Mark Rudan part ways following horror end to season

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Western United have parted ways with coach Mark Rudan after the club missed out on the A-League finals.

Rudan’s exit was confirmed on Tuesday, after the club’s season finished on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Central Coast in Gosford.

“We will use the opportunity to reset the club’s on-field objectives for the forthcoming season in order to meet the longer-term ambitions of our football club,” chairman Jason Sourasis said in a statement.

Rudan was appointed the expansion club’s inaugural coach in 2019 after a solitary season in charge of Wellington Phoenix.

The ex-Sydney FC and Adelaide United defender led Western to last year’s finals series in their first season, falling one game short of the grand final.

After a solid start to the 2020-21 campaign, Western lost their last eight matches of the campaign to finish a lowly 10th on the ladder.

Assistant coach John Anastasiadis has been placed in temporary charge as the hunt for Rudan’s replacement gets underway.

Frankie’s was an institution. We also had a Star Wars themed bar too in Sydney, but that sadly closed down too. Well, there’s always McDonalds!

We want the Adelaide Andy A-League book. Interestingly, the underground Sydney bar (Frankie’s Pizza), where Mark had a few “choice” words to Mel is closing its doors.

He punched on with her boyfriend, a usb of footage was found at maccas with hours of footage of Mel and he was asked to keep his distance from her. Some would say borderline stalking. Google mark rudan usb for more info

And then we will blame Kazakhstan for being inferior to the a-league and ruining the superior Australian talent!! Their fault off course.

kids of this generation spend too much time glued to social media and screens, that's part of the problem as well as being part of a generation that is mollycoddled from the world Rudan is old school, which has its pros and cons with todays generation. Every club he's been at, hes had run in with youngsters that dont or wont buy into what he expects of his team. No issues with the senior members of the dressing room, always the kids. he'll coach again, i would not be surprised to see him as wanderers coach if they pull the pin on the robinson disaster

Thats the annoying thing this season. Outside the big six, and reddy, our team was filled with a bunch of 18 year olds I had never heard of until this year.

This is a valid point. As far as public relations go, I think Mel is rated a lot higher than Rudan though. Anyway, Mark was briefed to keep a professional distance from Mel, which he agreed to. I doubt the two will work together again soon. Hopefully time heals all wounds.

hopefully he doesn't get signed up to do any punditry for paramount or 10. If they sign him, there is zero chance of luring mel mclaughlin from channel 7 - with there history

Why is this club in the A League anyway? Do they have a fan base? Do they have a home ground?

Good - and some great (Castro) - players in their time, but a reset is inevitable at this stage. Glory never seem to have any mid-age players - all too old or too young!

that game at Suncorp last season when they pulled that stunt was one of my worst football experiences ever. Totally debased the game, ought to have been fined or banned a few matches for disrespect of the game.
