‘Why are you barracking against your team?’ Old keepers up in arms over Gilly cheering Windies and Cummins too nice

By The Roar / Editor

Former Test captain Tim Paine was not impressed with the footage of Adam Gilchrist embracing Brian Lara after the West Indies secured their boilover win at the Gabba.

While another old keeper, Ian Healy, gave Pat Cummins a bake for being too nice with his praise for the opposition following the world champions’ upset defeat to the eighth-ranked underdogs.

After overnight sensation Shamar Joseph took his seventh wicket when he bowled Josh Hazlewood to wrap up the shock result, Lara was overcome with emotion in the Fox Cricket commentary booth.

“I get it from a fan’s point of view, it annoys me when I hear past players commentating and almost barracking. I find that really hard to listen to,” Paine said on SEN.

“It was awesome for the West Indies. It was not great for Australia. It wasn’t a great performance.

“I just don’t like it. It makes me uncomfortable. Why are you barracking against your team? That you played in?”

Healy on the same radio station thought the skipper should have been more critical of his own side rather than lavishing praise on their opponents.

“You know, I wasn’t that happy with Pat Cummins and how he dealt with it,” he said.

“He’s a bit too glowing of the West Indies. I like that bit, but I don’t think he’s paying enough attention to his side’s underachievement.

“Do you reckon they played brilliantly? We only had to chase 216, that means they didn’t play brilliantly until the last day.

“Australia let them into that match big time. Hopefully there was a question after that that got (Cummins’) mind and his thinking on his own team, because that wasn’t good enough.”

I strongly disagree with Healy. I cannot stand it when sports people say after a loss “I was, or we were, not at our best.” It diminishes the accomplishment of the opposition. I really like this trait of Cummins. I understand Paine’s view but Gilly captained a series win in India. Paine lost at home to India. Gilly can do whatever the fuc|< he wants.

Paine is the fella who made the comment "Wait till you get to the Gabba" And then lost. :crying:

The sport is bigger than any team, and that is what Paine and Healy forget. We should always celebrate achievements and victories especially from the underdogs who have fought against the odds to win. The real winner is not the WI, but test cricket itself.

What an embarrassment Paine turned out to be for Australian cricket. Kept wickets very well but that is all he has done well from what we have seen. Disappearing out of sight should be his goal. As for Healy, he seems to get sillier every year. Was a very good but over-rated keeper but pretty ordinary in commentary since retiring. Gilchrist like Lara is a superstar of the game and a great guy.

Yeah, good call about Paine. He was charged with restoring the culture of the Australian team from the win at all costs stuff that led to sandpapergate. He did a fine job at the time. He seems to be intent on destroying whatever legacy he made for himself

When I read things about ex players giving opinion in the media I usually just assign them to 2 sides / motives. 1. The genuine pragmatist who provides largely unbiased opinion, often with good insight. Like Gilchrist & Ponting and a few others. 2. The guys who get asked purely because they will give an opinion that will divide, create controversy and argument, and is generally negative about current players and / or the game. Healy has moved that way on radio and since CH9 lost the cricket, and Paine probably knows that unless he goes that way no one really cares what he thinks, and in AFL Sam Newman made it his schtick and Kane Cornes and others follow suit. These guys find it simpler and more satisfying to criticise than they do to offer genuine insight or really anything worth listening to.

Remember whey Paine was the nice guy saviour of Aus cricket? He seems a flat out banker now. Healy was half correct imo. Nothing wrong praising the opposition on their victory but I didn't hear much from Pat about their own performance.

I think it’s poor form from Paine and Healy . It was amazing cricket from the Windies and particular Joseph, in his second test and with a busted toe . Australia got beat fair and square. I’d rather see our skipper acknowledge that and the opponents than act surly. It was that sort of attitude that led to the toxic environment that in turn led to sandpapergate . Seeing the responses from players like Lara and Hooper was really moving. Gilchrist and Lara was a nice moment. Gilchrist wasn’t celebrating a West Iindies win, he was celebrating with a friend / colleague . How often do we decry the lack of sportsmanship in the professional era? It’s a shame we can’t enjoy those moments when they occur without taking potshots at the participants

There's only two reasons Paine would have made this sort of comment; to get attention or because he's immature. One of the joys of playing any sport are the friendships you make with opposition players and you do that by being humble in defeat and/or helping an old adversary share what was, for them, such a special moment. Such a shame a former Aussie Test captain can't see that.

I liked it. It was candid and humble. Good on Cummins. Adam Gilchrist's behaviour is also great to see. It is a demonstration of love for the game and mateship breaching boarders. The Windies win is great for them, great for test cricket, and a wakeup call for the Australians. Despite Cummins response, the Australians will be hurting and they will be wanting to make amends.

How ridiculous. Does anyone truly believe that Gilchrist and Cummins don't want Australia to win? That they could see past this to share the joy of sport and display sportsmanship is a credit to both of them. Paine and Healey aren't showing themselves in a good light here.

What a Paine. At least Healy played against the last great West Indian side but he should be glad the contest is back on and celebrate it. Cricket is always better when the underdogs get up. Doesn’t matter where they come from or who’s happy for them. Also have these guys heard the average former Aussie test cricketer, turned commentator? Talk about barracking for their own.

Jeez. People are such grumps. Gilly was excited for his friend and colleague. That's healthy. Patty probably is going to be critical but in the team meetings and post match reviews where the feedback can be digested rather than seeming like public whinging. That's mature

If those bloody idiots couldn't see how important the WI win was for the future of test cricket then leave them to their blessed ignorance, hardly worth the air time.

Pathetic attitude from both Healy and Paine, maybe Gilchrist was really happy for Lara, maybe he knew just how much it mean to him and the Windies and wanted to celebrate for him, similar to Cummins, he's recognising a great performance while being the first to know his own team blew it. its ok for humans to be happy for other humans. Ex Australian cricketers need some attitude adjustment if all they want to keep banging on about is 'in my day we'd throttle them twice over....ruthless we were!'
