The 2021 AFL Brownlow Medal promises to be the closest-run count in many a year, with a number of stars vying for the gong as the best player of the season. Join The Roar for round-by-round updates and every vote from 7pm (AEST).
In recent times, this night has already had its victor all but crowned before the event has even begun, with short-priced favourites winning in a canter time and time again. This year promises to be different, with a plethora of the game’s greats all well and truly in contention to take home ‘Charlie’.
The slender favourite is Port Adelaide jet Ollie Wines, after a career-best season in which he secured a maiden All Australian blazer and led Port to a preliminary final. Averaging a whopping 32 disposals a game, the clearance king would be a worthy winner.
The two grand finalists also feature plenty of the hottest prospects, with Western Bulldogs guns Marcus Bontempelli and Jack Macrae, and Melbourne stars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver, all in heavy contention. The only question is whether they will take too many votes off one another to challenge in a high count, as happened to Bontempelli and Macrae at the 2019 Brownlow. A victory would make the lead-up to the big dance all the sweeter should one of them pull it off.
From outside the eight, St Kilda co-captain Jack Steele and Carlton gun Sam Walsh have defied their teams’ struggling form to loom as smokies for the prestigious award. Both were worthy selections in the All Australian team, and a Brownlow win would cap off superb individual seasons. Walsh would become the first third-year player to win since the great Chris Judd back in 2004.
Elsewhere, the Mark of the Year winner will also be crowned. It’s been a season dominated by a series of stunning grabs, with Richmond pair Shai Bolton and Jack Riewoldt, and Hawthorn’s Tim O’Brien, all beating out some severe competition to make it to the last three. Goal of the Year will also be close, though none of Bontempelli, Melbourne’s Kysaiah Pickett or Fremantle’s Caleb Serong faced the same amount of competition as the high-flyers did.
Prediction
Barring a surge of votes for Power teammate and noted vote-winner Travis Boak, Wines should do just enough to edge out Oliver and Bontempelli for the gong, with Steele and Walsh to be hurt by their teams’ relative poor performance in 2021.
Serong’s Derby-winning snap should take out Goal of the Year, while in the tighest-run count of the night, I’ll back in Jack Riewoldt to claim the Mark of the Year.

yeah, don't think the Willaston supporters liked losing after being 10 goals up at one stage

Wines got 36 votes.. that’s 50% more than Shane. That’s not a lucky win, just a lazy comment.

Boak played every game this year

I'm assuming Boak missed a few games due to injury which helped Ollie Wines who is also a worthy winner for 2021. What I found interesting was that Marcus Bontempelli didn't lose votes to other Bulldog players and yet he still polled so highly. Unlike, Melbourne with Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca.

It will be interesting to see a defender kick 10 goals — Naughton in the GF?

I am amused by the fact Ollie's partner is named Olivia.

Nice little bonus, well done Ollie, you deserved it. Seriously though, this medal has become a joke, no forwards or ruckman in the top ten? The coaches award is the real award.

Well, there's always the more-esteemed Crichton.

It's narrowed to a midfielder / accumulator award now. From 1970-1999 20 mids, 5 key position players and 9 ruckmen won. From 2000 onwards, it's 23 onballers and 2 Adam Goodes (hard to pigeonhole). Seems like "rotating through the middle" is the only worthwhile role in the game now. Maybe there should be a secondary award for the best player not in a midfielder role - to recognise their contribution in making the Brownlow Medallist look good.

The concentration of votes over a small number of players is a concern to me. The umpires seem to be even more manipulated by who the media favourites are than ever. For example, Jack Macrae picked up 40 touches and kicked a goal in one game but didn't get a vote. No defender or forward can get a 3 vote unless they kick 10 goals.

In another year any one of four players could have won the medal.

More excited by Boak being acknowledged for his work with CCA by taking home the Jim Stynes award.....well done Trav!

It’s an auxiliary consideration by a group of people who can’t accomplish their chief role effectively i.e. don’t put too much stock in it.

Ollie Wines is the new Shane Woewodin, Bont the most unlucky bloke since Scott West or Greg Williams
