Not much on Draper and Cox – big things expected from both of those players. Durham was a valuable recruit in 2021, also overlooked. Reid, Bryan and Baldwin (even possibly Hurley) could also make a contribution at some stage. Midfield could easily improve if Shiel, Caldwell and McGrath are back to full fitness, with Hobbs slated to join them.

2022 AFL season preview: Can Essendon get back to the finals?

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how Essendon accommodate Bryan, Baldwin, Reid, Brand, McBride and Eyre.

An unexpected journey: Essendon Bombers season review

It’s most likely due to the final 8 having a tougher draw the subsequent year, playing more of their fellow finalists. Sides just missing out have a slightly easier draw and so can qualify the next year. For instance, Essendon only played fellow finalists Swans and GWS twice this year (all three missing the finals last year). From 2020, Essendon only played finalists Collingwood twice – which turned into a free hit with all their woes.

'Swans and Bombers fans can be satisfied': Elimination final losers pave the way to a brighter future

A third reason for falling away in the last 15 minutes – lack of scoreboard pressure. 6-7 extremely getable set shots for goal were missed throughout the game. Convert some of those and the surge at the start of the last quarter would’ve yielded a 3-4 goal buffer, rather than just 3 points.

Essendon Round 12 review

If it’s dry, Pendlebury. If it’s wet, Pendlebury. Bombers don’t have the faintest clue how to play against him (or the personnel).

Anzac Day at the MCG: Who will rise first to become a premiership contender?

Post on another forum from an ex-staffer suggests “management” has restructured / reorganised / cleaned out the internal club stalwarts in pursuit of business strategies that disregard “old-fashioned” football club ethos and values. Out with the long-serving amateurs and in with the fresh, new professionals. Several other ex-employees / volunteers responded in agreement. If that’s the case, it’s not hard to see that the history, heart and soul has been sacrificed for the corporate goals of the modern football “business”. Given that EFC now seems all merchandising and spin – what exactly are today’s players supposed to buy-in TO?

You're kidding yourself if you think the Bombers' game plan is to blame for their nose dive

Anyone else underwhelmed by the local TV ‘coverage’? Multiple matches in play, but ages spent staring into the same bunker while the US broadcast conducted an interview or whatever. Some matches/players hardly sighted.

Easier fix – the width of the scoring area is 3 x 6.4m = 19.2m. Each behind is worth 1 point, but a goal six points. Proportionally redistributing the scoring potential (1 point, 6 points, 1 point) across the available width would mean spacing of 2.4m for behinds, and 14.4m for goals. This would yield a 225% increase in probability of goals being scored, and voilà, higher aggregates.
A progressive approach, requiring no other rule changes – but likely to raise the naysayers’ ire for “moving the goalposts”.

The easy fix to the AFL's scoring woes

Name change to “Gaffe” on the cards then?

The three most important players in each AFL Round 6 team

You need a set of stocks for Adelaide as well – poor Polec and Pittard mercilessly booed before even touching the ball. And in the ANZAC Round – no respect. Shock, horror!

The post-game booing controversy that is dividing opinion in the AFL

Would have all been forgotten on the walk back to the carpark without the great offence assumed by the media / social media. The best player (“champion”) for Side A has always simultaneously been the worst villain in the eyes of Side B for as long as the game has been played. Buckley and Hird, for instance, two historically deified and demonised between the two clubs in question.
Not in the same league as indigenous players being vilified, or the entire SCG crowd chanting “Carey’s a W**ker!” in unison some years back.

The post-game booing controversy that is dividing opinion in the AFL

Way too complex.

Conferences – Group 1 Significant VIC clubs (Coll, Carl, Ess, Melb, Rich, Haw), Group 2 Insignificant and relocated VIC clubs (Geel, Nth, Foots, StK, Sth/Syd, Fitz/Bris), Group 3 Non-VIC clubs and expansion/comedy relief franchises.

Draw – Group 1 travels once to each of WA, SA, QLD, NSW to ensure a decent non-derby crowd.

Finals – Group 1 qualifies for finals, with one each from Group 2 and Group 3. All games at MCG.

Malcontents and naysayers assigned extras AFLX games in China.

Should the AFL adopt a conference ladder system? The home ground advantage dilemma and a solution

17-round season, followed by 5-week positional rounds, followed by 8-team Finals over four weeks.
Positional round-robin 1-6 play each other; 7-12 play each other; 13-18 play each other. Makes the last weeks before the finals more competitive, with fewer “dead rubbers”.

The AFL is ready for a ten-team finals series

Hohns: Maxwell cannot be named because he has an established history of not being named. Wade cannot be named because his runs have been made on 20.1168m pitches instead of 22yds. Pucovski can be named because he hasn’t been previously been not named, and he has never failed at test level.

In the face of public anger, Australia's selectors finally back down

Time to update the wiki page for Australian cricket selection hard luck stories to include Maxwell with the likes of Law, Hodge, Siddons, Cox, etc…

Three changes confirmed in new-look Australian squad to play Sri Lanka

Bancroft was certainly gritty and, of course, played his role in taking the shine off the new ball.

Six talking points from Australia vs India fourth Test

Maybe Marshmallows rather than Marshettes in recognition the soft dismissals.
To give him his due, the fielding team hold far too many catches and don’t bowl enough no balls to allow him to improve his average.

The top ten excuses for Mitch Marsh’s failures at Test level

Not “far in excess”, but Clarke, Gilchrist and Smith for instance all had higher test averages than overall first class averages.

Handscomb reportedly called the booing “Pretty average” – which could equally apply to the object of the crowd’s affection.

What happens in the circumstance where BOTH teams breach the 6-6-6 rule?
Can you have still effect interchanges while the 6-6-6 formation is happening?
Will 50m arc monitor umpires be used to police the new rule? (Maybe arc drones with full video replays of offenders overstepping the line – that should provide plenty of new opportunities for broadcasters.)
What about netball bibs designating which players are forwards/mids/backs?

AFL rule changes are coming: The good, the bad, the indifferent

“Prior opportunity” should be relinquished whenever a player receives the ball from a teammate. This would eliminate the “no prior” rubbish that currently occurs when a player receives a “hospital handpass” from a teammate at close quarters and is immediately tackled. Deliberately handing off to another player under pressure in order to trigger a ball up is a common cause of congestion. Compelling the ball carrier to do more than squirt out a 1m handpass should open up play.
