The next generation of AFL talent will begin their journey to the big time tonight, with the first night of the 2023 AFL Draft upon us. Join The Roar for a live blog of Day 1 from 7pm (AEDT).
The AFL has once again split the draft across two nights; the first will feature the first round only, while Tuesday night will see every other pick lodged. Wednesday night will also see the pre-season and Rookie drafts completed.
The event will be held at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne for the second year in a row.

The build-up to this year’s draft has been as fascinating as ever, with the fate of West Coast’s pick 1 – and with it the rights to young star Harley Reid – a hot discussion point.
As it stands, the Eagles are expected to keep their pick rather than trade it to North Melbourne, securing Reid – and potentially entertain a pick swap to try and obtain Western Australian gun Daniel Curtin as well.
Gold Coast will also likely need to match an early bid for Academy gun Jed Walter, which could influence the rest of the first round as well.
It’s set to be a memorable night for nearly two dozen of the AFL’s best and brightest up and coming talents, so stay tuned to The Roar for every pick as it happens, with the first pick to be made at 7:10pm (AEDT).
Where: Marvel Stadium (Melbourne)
First pick: 7:10pm (AEDT); Monday, November 28
Watch: Fox Footy, Kayo Sports

No because WA is a football state as previously stated. Think luke Jackson as an example. A absolute jet, go home factor, chose freeo. JHF to Port etc. Now think how often that has happened to the 4 eastern states outside of Vic. I'm not saying it's never happened, but no where near as ofen or as higher quality. Think about how awesome GC and GWS team would be if they weren't just a bunch of feeder clubs for the rest of the league. Yes I know alot of that has to do with having that many top end talented youngsters on their list, but the fact remains those 4 clubs normally have to pay overs to keep their players because 95% of their list isn't from qld/nsw so always have the go home factor. Think brisbane with the go home 5 10 years ago and paying spuds 500-600k just to not leave. Sydney's probably a bit different cause they've always had the strong culture and brisbane is definitely building 1. But GWS and GC probably need an acadamey for the rest of their existence

I mean Ollie Murphy, Arie Schoenmakers, Tew Jiath, Logan Morris are all players still on the board that I thought would’ve gone in the first round.

It’s such an unfair system. GCS get 4 academy picks yet WA teams never get access to theirs cos they can’t pick until after 40. One rule for some, another rule for others.

I Heard on F0x Sport the Carlton who have 2 more picks 2rd night DRAFT 2 ,they will Take Ruckman Mitch Edwards and also Matt Carroll .....The reason on Taking Mitch Edwards is Because of Alex Mirkov Heart Condition?

Strange how Sydney were the only Club who did not present a guernsey or have one of their 2 draftees interviewed. Especially considering they were always going to take Caiden Cleary. Very disappointing, Bloods …

Since Rioli and Poppy. Breust is a gun but he needs help. Hopefully he can play for a couple more years mentoring Watson and Ginnivan.

Not really, kids from Tasmania and Albury were in the Allies. There were at least half a dozen from those two areas alone.

Because WA is a footballing state. I agree it’s a bit of a cop out I personally think that every state outside of Victoria should have academies before 40, I would also move the cut off for academy bids from 40 to 20

Yeah I agree. I also think we do have the option of trading up earlier in the order particularly if we really rate Lual or Jiath.

Sounds reasonable to me.

If I wanted to be mischievous, I'd suggest there are indigenous boys who don't have the same voice as not-so-indigenous-boys from other academies. But I'd never be so mischievous.

Actually, Freo should be in the same consideration as the two newer clubs, at least for another ten years, until you start getting some Father/Son recruits in. No?

I think there are a few teams that can't access their Academy players until pick 40. All the one who are called NGA. I don't know the difference between Academy and Next Generation Academy either.

I assume the logic was that Geelong rated Caddy slightly ahead of O’Sullivan but the deal offered by Essendon was sufficient for them to take O’Sullivan instead. I think Caddy satisfies Essendon’s needs more.
