The 2023 Trade Period has just one day to go, and a series of major deal still remain on the table as time ticks down. Join The Roar for a live blog and rolling coverage of the day’s news, rumours and action from 9am (AEDT).

Just hours remain in the trade period for 2023, and a swathe of deals remain on the table.

Busiest of all will be Hawthorn, who have four deals on offer they must navigate: Mabior Chol, Jack Gunston and Jack Ginnivan on the way in, and Jacob Koschitzke on the way out.

Those trio of ins are all contracted at their current clubs, lessening the Hawks’ bargaining power and removing the option of the pre-season and national drafts; that road looms large for a pair of Port Adelaide deals, with Esava Ratugolea and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher now both likely to join the Power in those circumstances as talks with Geelong and Essendon respectively stall.

Then there’s the prospect of a last-day surprise, with Dylan Shiel not quite as secure at the Bombers as his current contract and assurances from list manager Adrian Dodoro last week would seem to indicate. Could we see a shock twist in the dying minutes of the trade period?

Where was I raving about how Collingwood and Richmond were great clubs?

Yeah, that's it.

You missed the point. You were raving how Richmond and Collingwood are great clubs…and hawthorn not for certain reasons, that you could imply for many clubs, including Collingwood and Richmond. Hawthorn have had recent issues, but are still a great club. All clubs have to rebuild, especially after 4 gf’s in a row

Maybe you’re a closet Collingwood fan.

Not likely, unless you know something that we don't?

We also got pick 61 out of the D’Ambrosio trade. It looks like Hawthorn were forced to trade which didn’t seem to get mentioned anywhere. My suspicion is that Geelong were hoping to get something out of the Essendon trade for BZT and Duursma, but abandoned that idea when our trade looked like breaking down or going to the wire. You would normally expect to have prospects of getting good players for picks 31 and 35, but if you had a smokie likely to last into the late 40s you might do a last minute swap involving pick 35 — eg pick 42 and a future third rounder.

Oh I know, the lack of third round picks was probably what made it go down to the wire. We do have a 4th next year though - tied to Collingwood, received from Hawthorn in the D'Ambrosio trade. The future 4ths we gave to Port were ours and Carlton's. I suspect the plan is to try to use 31 and 35 to trade up a bit, but if that doesn't work then you're right, we might look at trading it out for a pick in 2024.

The flightless bird has been pushed by the mainstream media as some sort of recruiting guru

Would have been interesting to see Shuey, Selwood and him going for the ball at the same time

See I don’t think they did because even with the recruitment of Toby Pink their defence is very very thin. They’re gonna be bottom four

Thank you Tim - I've leaned heavily on your updates while overseas, and have appreciated them; both for their clinical reporting and your often humorous asides. Thank you too, fellow Roarers. We may not always agree, but there is so much more value to be found here than in the ad nauseum repetition and contrived nonsense of the mainstream media. You're an island of sanity in a turbulent sea. Someone's drunk.

Well I think every team would love to have Tim Kelly. Expecting the Eagles to make a bit of a push up the ladder next year. Port needed big defenders badly and managed to get a couple. It should make a difference next year. There’s always hope anyway.

Astute. The entirety, the choice of "talent range" as descriptor, and the search for accountability. I'm normally not one to rain on another's gaming of the system, but this was a mockery, a weakening of that which the system was meant to strengthen. If the standard you walk past is the standard you accept, then we as a collective have been forced to accepted this, and it stinks. So the AFL write some implausible defence (if we're lucky) and possibly even a ruling to prevent it happening again - until it happens again. Until there is complete transparency, how can there be anything less than mistrust and justified contempt?

Port were very restricted because of the trades already done. The move of Ratugolea from Geelong to Port is a win for the player and both clubs and Port didn’t have to overpay.

I am sad the Cats couldn’t keep Esava, and I suspect the holding out for the extra plastic steak knives was really about buying a few days to try and change his mind and get him to sign. He has elite physical ability, an adequate kick given he knows his foot’s limitations, and by all accounts a good team guy. He is not a great reader of the play, or a great man-on-man defender, so to excel he probably needs to be a “semi-loose” man who can have license to intercept and/or spoil, which means he needs smart defenders around him. Good luck to him and to Port with him, sad face from this Cats guy.

Is that because it's Dodorro's last? I'd consider that a win.
