The Sheffield Shield final is on a knifes edge, and Day 2 could prove pivotal in the final outcome of the match as Victoria and New South Wales resume their battle at the Junction Oval. Join The Roar for live scores and updates from 10:30am (AEDT).

The home side will resume at 6 for 266 on Day 2, with a pitch that is good for batting, but not quite perfect, with the odd ball doing enough to create more than a little bit of confusion.

Marcus Harris was the star of the show on the first day’s play, scoring 141 for the Victorians, whose innings ebbed and flowed.

Harris was touted as the key to the entire match coming in, and that proved to be the case yesterday, with the Aussie Test opener holding things together as wickets fell around him, before eventually falling an hour before the close of play.

He moved up and down through the gears wonderfully, and was patient enough, demonstrating to all involved how to bat on a pitch which is probably only going to get tougher with balls holding up and variable bounce.

On the other foot, there is also the bonus points situation to worry about, although unless the weather hits, a draw is looking less and less likely, with six wickets on the opening day and no signs there will be any less throughout the contest.

This Victorian innings has ten overs left in that race, and you feel they won’t want to lose any more wickets before then, so it could be a slow start to the day when Chris Tremain and James Pattinson resume.

The Blues will be looking for breakthroughs, and have a ball which is just ten overs old to do it.

Harry Conway was outstanding yesterday and the pick of the bowlers, coming in to take the opening wickets after a slow start, while Trent Copeland was better in the later sessions.

Still, the Blues batsmen will hold the key later in the day when they get a chance to do their thing, facing up to a strong attack which includes Pattinson, Tremain, Peter Siddle and Sheffield Shield player of the year Scott Boland.

It's somewhat understandable then that many of the batters have struggled a bit.

Behrendorff,Richardson,Paris and NCN aren't so shabby. What a difference they might have made in the results if they'd been available all year for WA. It was only Tasmania's capitulation that saw NSW in the final.

BAD LIGHT Looks like today's action is over. NSW got a breakthrough a short while beforehand, Sean Abbott bowling Marcus Harris for 23. Overs 23.5 Victoria 1/48

I'll cop it. Becoming fairly standard for their performances against Victoria this year.

Although, going by the conditions we've had so far, I think it's probably unlikely they will be able to just bat, bat and bat some more.

Cummins and Pattinson could easily be the 2 best batters as well!!!

If they can......certainly the bonus point situation is locked away rather conclusively. As good as Sidds and Patto were - it shines more light on the quality of the Harris knock yesterday. Crucial - next highest scores 35 to Henriques and 34 to Short. I say again....."Crucial".....

Well, Victoria aren't going to declare at any point now. Just bat, bat and bat some more. Score as many runs as possible. Set NSW 800 in a day if they can.

They wouldn't play Maxwell, although Head would offer part-time offies. Four quicks on a greentop wouldn't be unreasonable.

I suspect there would be the odd match where that could come into consideration......if.....Maxwell were in consideration in the first place!!

Would Nathan Lyons position be under threat for the ashes? Would it be worthwhile playing 4 quicks + Maxwell in the ashes depending on the conditions, look at what happened when English played India at Lord’s last year, Adil Rashid didn’t bowl for the whole game.

#Nudge Absolutely agreed - he was permanent 12th man across the summer for the tests - but this effort today is a nice reminder of why he's in the selectors frame. As it is this 5/28 takes his tally this season to 25 at 23.36 which only tells part of the story. Being 12th man so much he missed a bit of red ball cricket and he was a bit underdone as a result of lack of cricket with 2-151 v QLD back in Feb but since then 8/122 in the previous 2 matches and 5/28 here. Both he and Pattinson are currently in their 7th shield match for the summer and JP is now sitting on 22 wkts at 20.50. As it is too - Bird tops the table (50@22.22 from 10). Then Copeland on 49@18.26 followed by Boland 34@20.31 and Tremain 44@22.2. Abbott sneaks in with his more than handy 7/45 in the last game and now with 33@22.51 and then there's Conway sitting on 20@20.6. The two finger spinners Holland & O'Keefe have 26 and 19 respectively and both going at about 27. It's hard to find 2 better bowling line ups......well....Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon......that's kinda depressing for fans other than NSW - given Bird and Tremain both had to leave NSW to get proper a crack at it.

Smith and Warner want to play Ashes, so why the eff are they not playing the Vics today? Bit worried about not getting decent scores I suspect.

Stacking the Ashes 11 with 4 quicks and Lyon isn’t completely crazy.

Siddle with five and Pattinson bowled beautifully as well, Starc should be worried.

Sake! This ain't so good as a New South Welshman. But it's hard to begrudge the Vics with their year. And it's good for Australia seeing our quicks doing a great job. Will Australia retain The Ashes?
