England’s second innings will resume at 8/313 against Australia on the fourth day of the fifth Test of the 2019 Ashes series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the events at The Oval, starting from 8pm (AEST).
England’s second innings resumed at 0/9 on Day 3, as they were looking to build on the 78-run lead they had gained over Australia.
Joe Denly (one not out) and Rory Burns (four not out) were the two batsmen at the crease to begin the day, and they really did set the tone for their side.
There was a positive intent from both the openers, but despite the solid start, Burns was dismissed by Nathan Lyon for 20, as he tried to cut a short ball, and Tim Paine took the catch.
Lyon then picked up another scalp, as Joe Root was caught by Steve Smith at first slip. The England captain departed for 21.
England went into lunch at 2/88. When play resumed, Ben Stokes and Denly piled on the pain for Australia. Stokes was dropped fairly early on in his innings by Smith, as Lyon was able to find his outside edge.
Denly shortly after brought up his half-century, and Stokes then went on to do the same. England went into tea at 2/193.
When play resumed, Stokes was bowled by a beauty from Lyon, which saw the all-rounder dismissed for 67.
Peter Siddle then got in on the act, as he found the outside edge of Denly’s bat, and the catch was taken at first slip by Smith. The opener departed for 94.
Jonny Bairstow fell the same way for 14, except Mitchell Marsh was the bowler.
When 80 overs had been bowled, the new ball was taken, and it worked straight away. Sam Curran was caught for 17 by Paine down the leg side off the bowling of Pat Cummins.
Chris Woakes then came to the crease, but he was dismissed by Marsh for six, as Smith took a blinder in the cordon.
Jos Buttler had batted well throughout the final session, however, he fell to the shorter delivery from Siddle, and Marnus Labuschagne took a good catch out in the deep. Buttler departed for 47.
Jofra Archer (three not out) and Jack Leach (five not out) got through until the end of the day. England are currently 8/313, with a total lead of 382.
With still two days to play, it appears that England will bat for as long as they can, and build on the lead they have managed to produce.
The weather is good for the next two days in London, also. It will take a miracle for Australia to get anything out of this game. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 4, starting from 8pm (AEST).

Yep. He played some profligate shots in some of those middle innings, but he's always up for the contest.

I’ve just watched the replays and realised Wade wasn’t even going after Root, just using his feet to get to the pitch like he had done dozens of times in his innings. Just beaten by a good one that dipped and turned

Stokes, Broad, Bairstow, Anderson. I’m coming around to the view that Archer should be amongst them. With no knowledge of them personally at all I’ve judged them based on things they’ve said or reported that they’ve done. Annoying isn’t it

Half the England team? Haha, the voice of reason speaks.

Unless Warner absolutely fails in the four lead up Shield games before the First Test, I'd say he is definitely an automatic selection. Harris definitely not; he'll be having to make decent score in the Shield in competition with Burns, Renshaw and Bancroft.

In India the traffic is one metallic folding, enmeshing, rolling karma-sutra. Especially as the ubiquitous 'bumble-bee' is so numerous.

Lachlan well done. Can you do us a favour. After each series i enjoy reading reviews out of 10 & your input & thoughts on each player would be great when you have the time.

On performance in the Ashes series he has been the week link, useless. From what i understand there will be tour of Pakistan & New Zealand during our summer time. Will both openers be an auto selection?

Warner absolutely useless, at least he kept his good record intact.

We missed Starc, got to have him in your 12. Or, as he hit a 50 last test, I'd be getting into Starc's ear and tell him if he wants to secure a test spot he needs to improve his batting and get the #6 spot. For all the comments over the years about Marsh being an all-rounder - Starc can bowl better, bat better, provides left hand variety and creates footmarks for Lyon. I like your 1st 4, not sold on Wade or Marsh at 5/6, Patterson my preference or Pucovski with a solid all-rounder if going for the extra bowler or give Neser a run there. If Lyon is out you'd put Max in there. OR Carey as #6. I'm done with Paine - bring Carey in, bowling Cummins (C), Hazlewood, Lyon, Pattinson/Richardson. Gives an a bowling attack - Cummins, Hazlewood, Pattinson/Richardson, Starc/Neser, Labu with Lyon and Max as spinner/#6 if Lyon is out.

Who can?? His guts told him so, apparently, and he didn't consult anyone. It was a surprise to Langer

hes also been fairly cancerous in the side though gonzo, so tempted to move on from him and just give other openers a chance. It is a great record in aus but at least he should start with the drinks on the basis of is average being pretty much the lowest of the entire team all series. He's cost us big time this series http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=12492;team=2;type=series

have to agree on hazel wood staying in back in aus. Look at his average for series . Outstanding just tired last test should have been rested . He had been out of test cricket quite a while for four matches in a row with a quick back up for the last . They got it wrong with patto, I’m not concerned our bowling is in such a healthy place, lyon didn’t have the greatest series but still got home in the last innings ok. Siddle was unlucky with 6 dropped catches against his bowling but its aging and we get back Jhye richardson who was in hot form before his dislocation. Pattinson desperately unlucky not to bowl in last test as was starc , the former would have got some swing potentially and the later could have knocked the tail off in particular a bit quicker first innings and picked up a big scalp or two with pace . All in all bowling excellent .

Hazlewood been good but as well has his in Eng conditions where if Pattinson is bowling to his capability he is probly better in Aus conditions. Doesnt really matter but considering how bad the batting has been it really helps.

If they didn’t drop him in this series, then there’s no point dropping him at home, assuming he doesn’t have a disastrous Sheffield Shield, in which case I think they should bite the bullet and drop him.

I disagree: I think Broad was England's standout player.
