The Cronulla Sharks hosts South Sydney Rabbitohs in a clash of top four aspirants as round 20 of the NRL continues. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm AEST.

Both sides enter this game in good form. Cronulla have won five of their last six and while they were narrowly beaten away to Penrith last weekend, lost few admirers as they mounted a strong challenge to the defending premiers and runaway league leaders.

Souths rose to sixth place after their fourth straight victory, a 24-12 triumph over an out-of-sorts Melbourne, and now sit just two points behind third-placed Cronulla and fourth-placed Brisbane.

While Souths’ top four ambitions are not misplaced, their road to the finals is perilous. In addition to Cronulla tonight and the Warriors next week, they face Parramatta, Penrith, North Queensland and Easts in a brutal final month. Every two points gained from here on will enhance Souths’ finals prospects and hurt those of near rivals.

Based on their recent performances, the Sharks will surely start as favourites. But should they?

Prediction

Cronulla’s one of the best teams in the NRL at playing in and through opposition defensive lines, ranking at or near the top when it comes to line engagements, tackle breaks, decoy runs and offloads.

Souths have a bit of an issue when it comes to containing ball runners and limiting second phase play. Their likely path to victory is through winning the physical confrontation in the middle and, subsequently, field position, thereby limiting Cronulla’s ability to shift quickly and offload.

And this is a big part of what Souths have been doing recently, setting a platform for the fit again Latrell Mitchell to renew links with Cody Walker and the outside backs and reinvigorate the Rabbitohs’ attack.

I’m tipping Souths to win the middle tonight, especially in the absence of the suspended Dale Finucane, limit opportunities for Cronulla to shift laterally from good field position and ride the form of Mitchell and Walker to victory.

Souths by 6.

Just try celebrations for one month only. Not that bad - get over it. All finished today.

I agree, in part, as I said Souths need to change tactics, the comment was made without seeing the press conference so I wasn't parroting the coach but came to my own conclusions independently. But what you wrote makes no sense. If you get to the ground quick then you're often conceding (or should be conceding) dominant or surrender tackles. If three men are in the tackle, they are to release immediately unless it's a dominant tackle, which it isn't when the attacker is making post contact metres. They're the rules, they were written that way, in part, so there isn't a huge trade off between post contact metres and play the ball speed, which is what happens when the referee doesn't police the ruck. I concede that it's not easy to find the happy medium for the refs between blowing the whistle too often and letting the game flow, but if the last two games I watched are anything to go by we'll be having a very dour finals series this year.

Yeah I like creative celebrations but carrying on like a porkchop isn't part of the charity thing.

Listen mate, Trell has just come back after a long lay off, you cant expect him to do everything just like Reno didn't do it for the Bronx. Yes we've got a hard draw and this game was a big one to lose but, the boys can do it. Lets see what happens? I'm not giving up on them as they will most definitely will have to take no prisoners from now on, if the Tigers can do a job like they did on the Bronx so can the Bunnies do a job on all that is before them, we have the Warriors next week then Parra, Panthers, Cows and the Roosters and there is no way that we can't win all them games and even be in the 4  !

Smaller Sharks pack are clearly playing for a fast play the ball getting into a gap and getting onto the ground quick and getting up. Souths pack is trying to break tackles, make off loads and getting wrapped up by three guys and getting put on their backs. Demtriou is the coach. He should look at his tactics, not whinge about something that is purely the result of his tactics. All three Souths tries were off the back of dodgy calls anyway. Sharks are better coached by a mile. Souths should never have let Reynolds go. Unbelievable.

Latrelle should have sealed a hard earned win for Souths. Three missed field goals just not good enough for kicker of his calibre. They are going to find it hard to stay in the finals race now with their tough draw.

For the second week in a row, Souths play the ball speed massively slower than the opposition (3.75 vs 3.23s) yet conceded almost double the number of penalties'six agains. Yes, the attack looked pedestrian, but that's because they couldn't get any quick ball and the latitude Sutton gives markers that bordered on ridiculous. But the thing is, if the ref is going to let them lay all over the tackled player and slow the play the ball down, why give away quick play the balls when defending?

Now, now - the Burgesseses are not here as technical advisors to the USAF Stingray Looking Jet Bombers visiting the RAAF at the moment. Don't expect too much of 'em. :silly:

That was an intense ~90 minutes! That is a win built on resilience and defensive grit  the sharks were absolutely up against in every aspect, the bunnies had all the ball, field position and the calls go their way… the resolve and effort on display though was outstanding and is what got Cronulla home! Sharks were flat compared to last week which is expected, good sign if they can win when not at their best… the guts on display tonight was heartwarming, Fitzy would be over the moon with the resilience and attitude shown tonight. Souths pack is more impressive than I perhaps thought - Koloamatangi, Murray, Burgess, Tatola were a handful all night…they won the middle for a fair portion of the match. Anyways good win in a tight contest, I was pacing around the lounge room for most of the back end of that game  Up Up!!

I only saw the last ten minutes, during which Our 'trelle did nothing much. I'm happy for Craig Fitzgibbon in his first year - he is a carbon copy of Allan and, like him, is the real deal. They expect high standards of themselves.

Nah – how exciting was that last 10 minutes – Trell had 3 chances to win and couldn’t do it – Moylan is one of the most unnatural kicks I’ve seen and never looked like it – and Nicho Hynes just ices it – love golden point Until we lose in golden point – which used to happen quite a lot

Welcome to the nrl where the rules are made up and the points don't matter.... or is it the points are made up and the rules don't matter..... either way, it's no better than an episode of who's line is it anyway

Anyway not good enough as most surely can't rely on Trell to do everything for us! As they have let go the best fg kicker in the game, no excuses Bunnies, this was a bad one to lose as not many left to lose before its holiday time for the rest of 2022.

Two send offs this week but NAS doesn’t even get cited for what should have been a third. Lovely consistency.

Golden point is worse than a penalty shoot out in soccer. I wish they would make it golden try, or just play the full 10mins instead. The field goal-a-thon is rubbish or just have a old fashioned draw

Finally someone who can kick a field goal and not look like a rank amateur… well done Sharks good effort tonight. Souths look really disjointed in attack, Mitchell not really clicking at all with what’s inside him.. illias is a speed bump. They must have a better option at 7
