Round 2 continues this afternoon when the Manly Sea Eagles host the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Lottoland. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm (AEDT).

It seems hard to believe that an NRL coach could be in trouble after just one round, but rumours were swirling around Manly coach Des Hasler. It now appears he may be offered a short-term extension to reduce the size of any potential payout and keeping the pressure on.

Manly were diabolical last week after a reasonably bright start. James Tedesco terrorised the Eagles defence and the final deficit of 42 points even flattered Manly.

Hasler has responded with some changes. Andrew Davey will start with Jack Gosiewski back to the bench. Cade Cust and Sean Keppie both come on to the bench.

They come up against fellow first-round losers Souths, who will be desperate for a win to kick start their season. Their first-round assignment against the Storm in Melbourne was always going to be tough, but they were beaten early.

If the Rabbits can get some dominance through the middle, Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell could be in for a big night.

Wayne Bennett hasn’t held back, with Josh Mansour and Jacob Host dropping out of the 17. Jaxson Paulo and Keaon Koloamatangi take their places in the starting side and Patrick Mago goes onto the bench.

Prediction
We know that Des Hasler will have his Eagles side fired up and they will be a much different team this week.

However, the Rabbits will also be desperate for a first up win and have a bit more class in their lineup.

South Sydney Rabbitohs by 8.

Souths got the two points but went backwards from last week. Despite an atrocious first 30 minutes against the Storm their last 50 minutes was two levels above their best today. Manly showed grit given their losses, but it was more a case of the rain and the Rabbitohs errors that brought the Bunnies back to the field and exaggerated Manly's real form at present. Which, without Turbo and Addin Fornua-Blake leaves them at the bottom of the NRL ladder and already with a -56 points differential.

If the old Reserve Grade comp was still extant DCE should be shaking hands with that coach next week (and I have been a strong admirer of his hitherto skillful input). These days it is fashionable to talk about a team's 'spine' as a marker of team strengths and weaknesses but undoubtedly Manly currently have the most ineffective spine in the comp. Of course Turbo and Fainu may yet appear later, but in the meantime it is all misery as the Manly players perform like a bunch of strangers bereft of cohesion and teamwork. What a mess.

He’s a confidence player and they showed no confidence in him. Bennett on the other hand knows how to get the best out of him.

To be frank, I’m so old now I think it could be a problem if I put the handbrake on. Doctor reckons if I’m not dead by now then don’t fiddle with it.

Didn’t anybody else in the entire Rugby League world want to coach Manly ? Even Tooves must have rejected them for Dessie to get an extension. 2 more years of this Lotto lads.

Manly will be better for that game ... at least i hope they will. Stupid mistakes are costing dearly. Having said that the weather was brutal for both sides

What a bizarre end to that game. The Sea Eagles did lift in the second half but the brilliance of Damjen Cook and then Benji Marshall turned the game

No better than last week to be honest, only reason we didn't cop a 40-point hiding was the rain. Still haven't seen anything to suggest we'll win a game this season.
