Round 9 of the NRL premiership continues this evening when the Penrith Panthers take on the Wests Tigers at Carrington in Bathurst. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm (AEST).

Penrith head up and over the mountains tonight for their annual game in Bathurst. They won’t be lacking any motivation, after they gave up an 8 point lead to lose to the Rabbitohs last start.

Every time the Panthers lose a match, the critics come out and are promptly silenced the week after, when Penrith put on a clinic. Penrith’s kicking game is the best in the competition and they just relentlessly grind teams down. When the opportunities arise, they pounce.

Izack Tago is out with a pectoral injury, replaced by Tyrone Peachey. Sunia Turuva and Nathan Cleary have both been named, but are in doubt to start.

It’s been a long season already for the Tigers. They could almost taste victory last round, before Jason Saab ruined the party. Fans must be wondering when their first win will come. It would be a minor miracle if it happened tonight.

It’s not that the Tigers have a terrible roster on paper. Their senior players like Luke Brooks, Api Koroisau and John Bateman need to be accountable. They have enough young talent in the backline to cause problems for the opposition.

David Nofoaluma comes into the backs for his first game since Round 3, replacing Charlie Staines who is out for 8-12 weeks in a shocking blow with a perforated bowel. Brent Naden also returns from injury.

Prediction

Koroisau and Naden are both recent departures from Penrith and will be keen to make a statement.

However, I can’t see anything other than a Penrith win. The margin depends on whether Cleary plays or not.

(This is what happens when you decide to watch the Reds game because you think this match’s results were a forgone conclusion! – Sorry rugby league gods!!) Fantastic result for long suffering Tigers fans and good for the game as a whole too. Any NRL team can win on the day – you’ve just got to give it 100%!

For the Panthers, injuries in their forward pack are taking their toll. They just made too many errors tonight and it cost them victory. They are now 4 and 4 for the season. I'm not suggesting that they can't achieve the 3 peat but the Penrith aura may have gone

Wow, what a win, the Tigers have pulled off a huge upset. They played wet weather football almost perfectly and thoroughly deserved the win. Their forward pack rolled through the middle and were the difference in a game Tigers fans will remember for a long time!
