Round 12 of the NRL premiership continues this evening as the South Sydney Rabbitohs host the Parramatta Eels at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8pm (AEST).

The Rabbitohs are quite something right now. It’s not just that they’re top of the table with six wins in a row, including victories over the Panthers, Broncos and Storm, and firming as premiership heavyweights. Nor is it just the sustained success of the past five years and the sense that the club is evolving through careful deliberation and planning, including some unpopular non-retention decisions.

Souths seem, at times, to be very gradually deconstructing rugby league. Much is made of their ability to do damage from set pieces – scrums, tap-restarts and so on – but it’s more than that. It’s that any one of three or four versions of the Rabbitohs could hop out from behind the veil of the restart.

They can match the humming, relentless defensive pressure of the Panthers. They can do the controlled chaos of the Sharks at their best or the Roosters of past seasons, all moving, whirring parts and unpredictability. They can do the middle forward-led fire and brimstone of the Raiders or previous versions of the Eels. They can shift tempos like the Storm and Broncos if they need to.

And barring a sudden identity crisis, the Rabbitohs will win easily tonight against an Eels team who’ve managed to deconstruct themselves into a very ordinary rugby league team, currently sitting 14th, four points out of the top eight and coming off back-to-back defeats to the Titans and Raiders.

There is at least some good news for Parramatta, with half Mitchell Moses back from concussion, but there’s also bad news with key back rower Shaun Lane now out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury.

Souths have lost bench forward Jed Cartwright to concussion, with Daniel Suluka-Fifita taking his place, but are otherwise unchanged from last week.

Prediction

Form, style, tactical flexibility and coherence, strength in key positions, the gambling odds, the general vibe – it all favours Souths.

Rabbitohs by 20.

I will tell you one thing, Parra will not beat us again, most of our forwards were out and next time it won’t be the same. I will predict the same for the next time we play the Panthers and the Eels that we will win  remember that Panthers

Yes, no excuses, not good enough tonight! We were not too good overall. Not enough ball and our efforts were not good enough against a more determined side that needed to win, we needed this loss imo, can’t win them all, as I knew we would lose as i eluded to history and 4 years ago, when Parra beat us last

At least they don’t throw in the crap that Walker does , every time they are losing. Great player, no doubt. Yet forearm to the head etc, as South’s can’t win a game. Rinse & repeat from previous non winning results.

Its taken 4 years for Parra to beat us, and in 2019 Souths were leading the ladder up to R11 and Parra beat us in R12 and we were 2nd  anyway, I'm not too worried about this loss, as Parra won't beat us again for another 4 years, enjoy enjoy all you Parra fans, great win see yah next time

Eels had scored the same number of tries as South’s before this game . Just hadn’t defended too well. Parramatta had plenty of ball & did plenty of offloads. One of those nights …

Great win by the Eels Obviously a lot of their stars like Paulo, Moses and Brown stood up but so did a lot of their lesser lights - Greig, Makatoa and Ogden were strong in the middle. Simonsson was good other than letting in Graham’s try. Carty had a blinder

Well done Eels.. Rabbits were shocking toward the end of the game.. too many mistakes, too little respect for the opponents too. Latrell just drifts in and out, just disengaged most of the game. He seriously needs to stop listening to how good the fan boys in the media think he is. Frustrating player, all the skill in the world but doesn’t take the game seriously enough.
