Redcliffe is a historic grassroots suburban club promoted to the top league. Contrasted with your two examples of top down franchises created to represent a whole city. Of course Brisbane & Gold Coast aren't going to be named after the specific suburb they're based in, and it's disingenuous of you to link them with the historic Redcliffe Dolphins. It's just silly to strip Redcliffe of their identity.
I think it was 89 Fitz picked a fight with the French at the SFS (never a good idea). Anyway, he’s marching around waving his fists in the air when he got knocked out cold by the prince of centres Phillipe Sella - I grew up watching and playing league and Sella was right up there.
Brisbane play at Milton but they’re not the Milton Broncos, the Gold Coast Titans train and play out of Robina but they’re not the Robina Titans…… Moreton Bay Dolphins train and play in Redcliffe, a part of Moreton Bay region with a population of 480000.
I watched this "interview", and I think Fitzy and the rest were just having fun. It's more an advertisement than an interview. "Redcliffe" was never going to be in the new club's name. The Redcliffe Dolphins are already a team in the QRL as we all know. And the new franchise said ad nauseum that it wanted to appeal to a large catchment including Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast Regional Council areas. The Redcliffe peninsula is miniscule by comparison. The franchise also made it clear from the start that their principal home playing ground would be Suncorp Stadium. But Redcliffe is not Brisbane which is a point many have made.
Even the Brisbane Broncos don't represent Brisbane. Their enclave is in Fulchers Road, Red Hill, well within the northern suburbs of Brisbane.
As for the Jets and Firehawks, they were eying off a catchment out through Ipswich to Toowoomba, and that's hardly Brisbane either which both stridently said they wanted in the franchise's name. Anyway, I'm still cranky that they didn't adopt my suggestion. Moreton Bay Bugs.
Ah, Peter Fitzsimons and Lisa Wilkinson! Australia's own prince and princess of "Woke". Most of the time Fitzsimons thinks he is talking about Rugby Union in any case. Too many years packing into scrums, being punched in mauls and stomped on the head in rucks have left him a little disoriented. That and a bright red bandana that was about two sizes too small which cut off the circulation to his brain have lift him with an overinflated ego and a disproportionately high opinion of himself.
Peter Fitzsimons is fast becoming a cartoon character and is now playing the part of Peter Fitzsimons. He is, presumably, happy with his mate Nick Politi$ changing the team that Arthur Beetson player for from Eastern Suburbs Roosters to Sydney City Roosters to Sydney Roosters.
I get the point that he is making but again, this is just his act to be controversial and he couldn't care less what a new team was called. The reality is, much to everybody's chagrin, the game is a business today and they need to do whatever they can to attract as many supporters (ie $$$) as they can.
It was such a dumb move and I'll never understand it. Location names are so important and I'm embarrassed that Redcliffe would chose to drop it and their rationale is even more ridiculous. As if people can't support a team unless they live in that town?
Nat, when you put all the pieces in the puzzle together Redcliffe were signed sealed delivered a long time ago . Maybe a bit of window dressing with the other applicants to keep the media happy .

You think that’s bad, you should see what the opposition did to him during ruck and maul time. They were built tough back then.

He wasn't wearing it, probably why he is making sense.

Port Adelaide retained their name. They also only changed the nickname from "Magpies" to "Power" because Collingwood wouldn't accept it.

I think you're missing the point.

Agreed. The Super 12 teams are hard to follow for a casual viewer, when all you have are names like the Bulls, Highlanders, etc
Nat

I think so too. Even encouraging the Jets and Firehawks to talk merger was a fair indication of where they stood.
