Michael Cheika's emotional reaction as the Wallabies bow out of the World Cup

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have been knocked out of the 2019 Rugby World Cup after suffering a 24-point defeat at the hands of Eddie Jones’ England side.

Michael Cheika’s men put in an admirable effort but couldn’t make the most of their opportunities and England pounced on their repeated errors throughout the quarter-final clash.

Speaking after the game, which could be his last in charge of the Australian side, an emotional Cheika conveyed his disappointment at the result, but also his pride at his players’ effort.

“I was supposed to get this done for the people here, for the Australians… I’m f—ing so disappointed,” Cheika said.

“They gave it everything. They put their bodies on the line.”

Cheika previously led the Wallabies to a surprise final appearance in the 2015 World Cup.

You don’t want to kick a bloke when he’s down, but Cheika forfeited any sympathy with his behavior over a long period.

Wallabies didn't (in the words of Lou Reed) play football for the coach tonight. The only question left is will Michael resign before he's sacked? I didn't expect them to win but was hoping they would rip into the English and leave them with some aches and pains to carry into the semi's. Not even.

None of what you said makes sense. You're railing against reality mate. Beat NZ next week and then lets see if your hubris is still there sunshine.

It’s interesting how many emotional comments there are, about an emotional coach. That is our common quality, we all care. I wish him all the best. Yes, I’ve been annoyed, disappointed, disgusted and frustrated by the collective group. However, for a few minutes, here and there, I’ve also been hopeful. Farewell and thank you MC.

Empire attitude still alive and well eh. Gotta keep those colonies in their place. Unsettling, pathetic, ingrained, awful English pomposity.

They’ve gone nowhere since the last World Cup. No set starting lineup, no set number 8, 10, 12, 11, 14, 15...from the Finals to knocked out in the Quarters, with losses to second tier teams over the past four years. Bye bye Cheika, for the good of Australian rugby.

No sympathy for Cheika. He outstayed his welcome by 4 years and has been the worst, and most biased, selector and worst tactical coach of the Wallabies professional era. He probably ranks as one of the most limited coaches of the Wallabies ever. Good riddance to him. One feels a bit for the players, however most of them were yes men for their coach, that's why they were there. Anyone who showed any initiative had been weeded out quickly by Cheika who somehow thought he, and only he, had all the answers....
