What Eddie Jones and Owen Farrell said to the England team after World Cup defeat

By The Roar / Editor

England Rugby has released behind the scenes vision of the World Cup final, including what coach Eddie Jones and captain Owen Farrell said to the devastated team following their defeat against South Africa.

The ‘Rising Sons’ series gave fans an up-close and personal glimpse of England’s journey in Japan throughout the tournament.

And it didn’t pull any punches despite a disappointing result in the Cup decider.

Meanwhile, despite speculation Jones may look to link up with the Wallabies again, he is set to remain with England.

Jones is contracted until the end of 2021 with England and has told reporters since the World Cup final he intends to see out the remainder of his deal at least.

Owen just does not come across as a natural skipper. Some are born to lead and others come up the hard way. Maybe release him from being skipper and let him play his game. One of the young back rows would be my choice. They will be around for a long time to come. Will Carling came in young also so there is form.

Only SA has beaten Australia, England and NZ though.

Launchbury is the best lock in the N.H. not starting ...

I'd agree mzilikazi. But they'd already signed up for access all areas with the 'Rising Sons' YouTube series, which were pretty good in connecting with their fan base. I suspect that camera crew had become part of the furniture, as they'd been with them from the warm up games before even arriving in Japan. No one enters a dressing room like that without careful consideration, so good on them for fronting up in adversity.

To be fair, on 8/9 occasions one of SA/NZ/Aus has won it and they can't beat themselves.

Obviously the coaches know better than I do, but I would have thought Alaalatoa or Rodda would be reasonable. Rodda especially. Already a smart line out operator – obviously has a brain on him.

Launchbury has to be the unluckiest lock walking the planet currently. He's missed a Lions tour and a RWC final he could rightfully have played in. Genuinely feel for the bloke. Eddie seemingly prefers Lawes versatility and the fact Kruis partners Itoje at Saracens - which has been particularly tough on Launch since he's frequently been in better nick than Kruis. The way he stacks his bench, four into three just doesn't go. Curry or Underhill show promise, but are still a few years away from commanding that dressing room, let alone match officials. I also think Hooper has had his chance to shine as captain, and missed the mark. But it's difficult to pull up a successor - suggestions?

Not a bad suggestion at all.

I think George would be an excellent captain. I also think Launchbury would, and I’ve never understood why he doesn’t start with Itoje. What about one of Curry or Underhill? Think the Wallabies need a new captain too.

I guess George is veteran enough at 29! Only thing is with the way front rows get subb'd out around the 50-60 mark - you are going to need a VC thats in for the long haul. So perhaps George with Itoje as VC? Then he can grow into the role a bit.

No way should the cameras be in that changing room at the end of such a game....or any game in fact. Far too invasive....we have no right, or even need, as the public, to intrude.

Jamie George has a far leveler head than Itoje right now. That's not to say he won't mature. But I do like the idea of your Hooker as captain. Lots of opportunity to chat with the ref at scrum time too.

I don't really know much about Farrell as a captain - he is clearly a great player and the team looks to him but is he the right person to take the team forward through the next 4 years? Im not sure.. Im a little old school and think a tight forward is ideal for captaincy as its usually where the tide of battle needs to be turned first. With that in mind and because he has led already - Itoje would seem a good bet for the future. Thoughts Neil?

Rising Sons was an interesting insight to the England camp. As many qualities as Farrell has, and as tough a dressing room speech that is for a captain to make, it’s becoming painfully obvious he is monotone as a thinker, communicator and motivator. He’s limited, and it’s proving fatal on the pitch.

Good words. They should be proud. They needed a plan B, but you can't do more than try your hardest. No team has beaten Australia, ABs, and SA and won WC. And we saw why.
