Sam Kerr's message to Matildas critics: 'Suck on that one!'

This has been a bizarre chain of events. In my mind there is no doubt been a lot of pressure on Kerr and/or the Matildas. Consequently the outburst is understandable but when will athletes start thinking about consequences. The ABC article indicates that the coaching issue is not the problem. Indeed that controversy only arises from the anger that the team's hard work of four years was being derailed by administrators with their own agenda. If this is about misogony or, worse, the personal abuse she is apparently experiencing, then her choice of insult is mind boggling. She must be too young to understand the derivation. There is an element of premeditation in these outbursts, even though there may not have been an intention to say anything post match. Athletes need to think it through better. Adam Goodes had years to stew on the issue of racial abuse from crowds. Why did he choose to unleash on a teenage girl from the opposition, no matter how inexcusable her mimicking behaviour? Calling out an adult male Swans supporter for vilifying an opponent would have been 10x as effective and the stuff of immortal legend. Social media trolls are a disease in a civilised society. Sam deserves an opportunity to respond appropriately on the public stage. We need her to make that telling and measured response. The wrong comment at the wrong time is sadly not very helpful and I hope she has not shot all her bullets with no good effect.

This was aimed beyond MSM and a disbelieving public and hints at some vitriolic trolling these players constantly face. After the Italy vs Jamaica game I don’t think Jamaica’s defence will offer much resistance especially if we get a couple of early goals.

A draw holds no fear for Australia as that leaves Brazil on 4 points and assuming we beat Jamaica were on 6 points from two wins.Only way we can't progress is lose or inferior goal difference if Brazil wins.

The haters aren't in her head, they are real. There's a good article on the ABC News app about this. It's not about what most of us thought it was about

She has a long way to go to catch up with our crass male athletes.

I haven’t told people to go and suck on something. If we don’t want our male athletes to be crass surely we should dignify our female athletes by holding them to the same standards?

You criticised Kerr for her choice of words yet you defend your own choice of words as a mere figure of speech. Go figure.

Boys-Men, Girls-Women, figures of speech. No malice intended. My point still stands though.

How often do we hear the media and some people complain about athletes been robots with their responses? Especially in those post match interviews when they say "credit to the boys", "game of two halves", "we gave it 110%". Then you come across a post match interview that is full of emotion and not cliches, yet people still complain. What type of post match interview do people want? There's probably a reason why Kerr felt that way.

I think you’ll find Ms. Kerr and the rest of the team are all grownups - women in fact.

Me either. Young AND one of Australia's top athletes. She was a chance to win the world player of the yr. Her mere presence has Brazilians scoring own goals haha

You’re kidding aren’t you? Sports fans will always comment and offer an opinion about their teams. This being a female team doesn’t make it any different.

No. The girls are pros now and the standards in the way they interact with the media should reflect that. Equality goes beyond a fuzzy feeling.

Griffo I think you are mistaken with those prognostications. Matildas would have to lose to Jamaica to be out, which is an impossibility.

the criticism wasnt aimed at the Matildas as a team or any team individual. the criticism was aimed mainly at the change in tactics to play a high line in defence at such relatively short notice. this was corrected in the match against Brazil and it paid off.
