Jaidyn Stephenson under investigation over AFL betting

By News / Wire

Collingwood star Jaidyn Stephenson is being investigated for allegedly betting on an AFL game involving the Magpies.

Young Collingwood star Jaidyn Stephenson faces the prospect of a lengthy AFL ban and large fine if found guilty of betting on a game he played in.

The incident – understood to involve a wager of less than $50 – is being investigated by the AFL Integrity Unit.

Eight years ago, former Magpie and current GWS defender Heath Shaw was banned for eight matches for backing then-Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell to kick the first goal of a game.

4 weeks for stupidity for mine, but no excuse.8 bets for $35 his return would have been very minimal approx.$200-300 max. Most kids his age are pretty naive, and think there bulletproof. Heath Shaw ( old man) only got 10 he should of known better.

The nature of the bets probably didn’t help him

It’s a harsh one Pete when you consider you get less for breaking a young kids jaw, but he knew the AFL policy on betting so he deserved what penalty they think is applicable.

An example needs to be set and reinforced - no betting by players in the AFL! Betting increases the possibility of result fixing and must be wiped out. Heath Shaw's case should be the basis for a decision and make sure this ugly aspect of the game never returns. Put him out for the rest of the H & A but then let him return for the finals.

Reports say he bet on Pendlebury gathering 30+ possessions. If vision suggests he favoured giving Pendles the ball over others then that would be spot fixing. Is that a crime in Oz?

Yeah it’s such a silly thing to do Cat. Crisp in 2015 said he forgot you can’t bet. Don’t think he’ll get away with that

Think you are drawing a long bow on what he may or may not have actually bet on. Sounds more like hoping it was something dumb than something that would be considered something more serious.

It will be interesting what penalty the AFL impose Pete. Shaw was fined $20k and banned for 14 games (6 suspended) for placing a $10 bet @ 101 for Nick Maxwell to kick the first goal. Maxwell was fined $10k because his family placed bets on him. Betting back then was an issue so perhaps the penalties which in my opinion were way over the top were applied.

Which would indicate Pete he's about as smart as a box of hammers. The players get schooled on this stuff, so taking a huge risk for so little reward is beyond belief.

If the AFL impose a sanction, the duration of weeks will be of interest. 19 year old kid . Probably bet on himself to get the first goal which would be what $9 odds at $50 to win $450? And the money he’s on at the Pies would make $450 seem like spare change down the back of the car seat.

A fine of the amount he bet would cover it, no suspension, AFL endorse betting judged by the big screens at there games.

The match Marsh and Lillee bet on Australia to lose, supposedly when the odds were 500-1, was at Headingley in 1981 (3rd test). Australia were 1-0 up in the series, Botham had just been sacked as captain, and England were 7-135 following on, still almost 100 runs from making Australia bat again. The end result was that Botham scored 149 not out, England set Australia 130 to win and the Bob Willis took 8-43 and Australia were bowled out for 111. Botham went on to take 5-1 in a spell at Edgbaston in the 4th test as England again bowled Australia out chasing a small 4th innings total, he scored a big hundred in the 5th test as England won again and they won the series 3-1. No punishment for Lillee and Marsh.

If your worse case you're fine, once Elliott is fit he's a pretty good replacement. Judging on recent cases he'll only be fined if guilty imo

Not a very smart thing to do in any case. Incredibly daft, actually. And I’m saying that as a big fan of Stephenson!
