Don Pyke quits Adelaide Crows

By Stirling Coates / Editor

The AFL coaching carousel has claimed another victim, with embattled Adelaide coach Don Pyke today resigning with two years left on his contract.

Pyke released the following statement.

“It has been an absolute privilege and joy to coach this Club and I have loved my time here trying to achieve great things with our players for our Members and fans.

“I came here with the aim of helping our players to individually and collectively be the best they can be and this has been my driving force.

“It has been a wonderful ride with some great memories and unfortunately some sad times, but now it is clear to me it is my time to move on knowing I have given my all.

“This decision has been extraordinarily difficult to reach but vital for me is the Club and playing group being able to move forward, and the health and happiness of important people in my life.”

Pyke joined the Crows ahead of the 2016 season, having previously been an assistant with West Coast. He joined the club at a fragile time, following the shock death of first-year coach Phil Walsh midway through 2015, but was able to enjoy immediate success.

Playing a high-octane brand of football with unparalleled scoring prowess, the Crows finished fifth in his first season in charge before claiming the minor premiership a season later.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it got.

A disastrous loss to Richmond in the grand final led to the now-infamous Collective Minds pre-season training camp, where players were reportedly subject to bizarre psychological ‘tests’ like listening to the Tigers club song on repeat. Indigenous players on the list also complained of culturally insensitive practices during the camp.

Entering 2018 as a premiership favourite, Adelaide floundered and missed the finals altogether in 12th. While they were tipped to return to September this season, they could only improve their ladder position by one place, while actually losing two more games.

Pyke’s departure continues a peculiar trend at Adelaide, with no coach in club history ever successfully surviving two consecutive seasons out of the top eight.

No replacement has been named yet. Both the Crows and Dockers are in the hunt for new senior coaches, after Carlton, North Melbourne and St Kilda all gave the jobs to the caretakers.

Don Pyke’s time at Adelaide

Year Pos. Record Percentage Finals
2016 5th 16-6 138.3 Lost semi-final to Sydney
2017 1st 15-6-1 135.9 Lost grand final to Richmond
2018 12th 12-10 104.1
2019 11th 10-12 100.9

We need Nathan Basset - he was a brilliant player, a great coach at Norwood and has had AFL supporting coaching roles with other teams, and he needs to come home! I am quite disgusted that a lot of our really good players seem to be leaving. Is there no such thing as commitment and loyalty anymore. We have lost so many players over the past few years that we have put the time and effort into - and we get nothing for it. Dangerfield, Davis, Cameron, Henderson, Gunston, Lever - the list goes on and on....... I now hear that Ellis-Yolmen is going along with Keath, Jenkins, possibly Greenwood, Betts and maybe even the Crouches!! Bloody hell there won't be any team left soon. I'm sick of this.

Oooh, a thread with 13th, DF and JB. We've almost got the team back together! I'd rather new, non-Victorian, Fremantle roots, so John Longmuir fits the bill for me. I'd previously dismissed Sumich based on commentary on here, but I do wonder whether he could pull a Fagan. Just needs an opportunity to be the bride rather than the bridesmaid. - JLo coach, PS assistant - JLo coach, AFL-experienced coach as assistant (could possibly get away with a Hird appointment in this role)

How can a fantastic coach get the sack ? He is not proven anything, No premierships ! and a complete failure over the past 4 years in a rebuild and renovation period where he obviously did not have all the players support. Obviously loved by a few Sandilands, Ballantyne,Johnson,Dawson, D.Pearce are a few that come to mind but you will lose your job if you don't get everyone on board it is as simple as that. Time to move on, and enjoy new faces and ideas.

14 points shy or 6 goals shy? Injuries are the reality. He is a fantastic coach. Proven.

Sorry Don. But from where I sit, Ross is not the best option for Freo. Or for too many other clubs for that matter. My reasoning is that though Ross is good at creating order out of chaos, mainly through his belief in players becoming more professional and "bringing great effort" I think his method ultimately falls short against teams who tick those same boxes, but who have far better ball movement. For example, Lyon's record versus Alastair Clarkson whilst at Freo was 1-10. His only win was in Round 21 in 2014. Freo's average score in those 10 losses was 62 points. Hawthorn's average winning score was 107 points. Similarly, Lyon won the first three games he coached against the Eagles in 2014 and early 2015. However since then his record is 0 and 9. Freo's average score in those 10 losses was again - 62 points. West Coast's average winning score was 100 points. You can go on all you like about rebuilding and injuries and Lyon being the right man for the job. But when you look at his results versus the two most successful clubs in recent times - the Dockers continually seem to be on average, six goals shy of being competitive, let alone winning.

I'm fine but I see a Port Bandwagoner trying to dump their failed coaches on the Crows and call it out for what it is. Someone has to do it. It is rare to read about negative things concerning Port because the Adelaide Media (and by extension the Melbourne Media) are a bunch of Port Promoters. No article covering the looming Port financial losses - AGAIN (nor the high debt levels at Alberton ... no repayments AGAIN this year). They continue to make losses on the China experiment and have deferred player payments to next year due to the poor cash flow, driven in the main by their declining Membership and poor crowds. They do not have a women's team (nor do they want one it seems), have missed the finals in 4 of the past 5 years and haven't won a final in that time either, but we don't seem to have the media constantly calling for the head of the coach, the chairman, the CEO and the tea lady (as is the case at Adelaide). Apparently players who have been retired by the club or told that their requested deals (Keath, Greenwood, CEY etc) will not be forthcoming are looking elsewhere (fair enough) BUT according to the media that constitutes a mass exodus of players? What the!! Phewwww! That's better!

Stop trying to dump your failed coaches on Adelaide. If Port fans aren't suggesting Hinkley, they are suggesting Voss. They would likely prefer them both gone but are stuck with them as they do not have the $ to pay them out. Kochie the financial whizz?

If he was out of touch with the playing group, he wasn't like Ross Lyon. One thing you must concede is how close the players were to Ross.

I'd be quite happy for a Pies premiership. As you know, I'm a great Buckley fan. However, my tip for a while now, has been a WC/GWS grandy. WC's flag.

Given were our list is at not a bad thing we will start to get more access to the better talent. This years pick is the probably the earliest we have ever had and with some players there a few more years like that and we will rebuild. Look fwd to that rather then the half baked efforts in the last two years.

So much for Don's suggestion that the majority of members loved Ross!! Both Fremantle and Adelaide are better off getting first time coaches. If you look at the last 3 flags they have all been won by first time coaches rather than recycled ones. Longmuir to Freo and Bassett or Rutten to the Crows.
