James Tedesco wins 2019 Dally M Medal

By Scott Pryde / Expert

James Tedesco of the Sydney Roosters has won the 2019 Dally M medal with a total of 34 votes, defeating Cameron Smith (31) and Mitchell Moses (29) for the honour.

Having put together one of the best seasons in modern history, Tedesco came into the night just a handful of points behind, and by the time there were three rounds to go in the count, it was clear the man known as ‘Teddy’ was going to claim his mantle as the best in the game.

Between Rounds 18 and 22, Tedesco claimed three points in each round, rocketing to the top of the list as he left Smith, Moses and, at that point, Payne Haas and Cameron Munster for dead.

The mid-season leader when counting went behind closed doors, Mitchell Pearce gained just three points in the second half of the year to hold onto tenth spot on the leaderboard, while Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Jason Taumalolo also couldn’t hold pace.

Damien Cook and Cameron Murray of the South Sydney Rabbitohs were the other two players who snuck into the top ten.

Elsewhere, it was Melbourne Storm duo Cameron Smith and Craig Bellamy who claimed captain and coach of the year respectively, while Payne Haas came away with rookie of the year.

Jessica Sergis was named women’s player of the year after a phenomenal NRLW campaign ahead of teammate Botille Vette-Walsh, Charntay Poko and Millie Boyle.

Tedesco, Haas and Murray the certain winners, no one came close to the season that these players had, well deserved. However would question all the other Dally M results. Winger: Ken Maumalo ? Maumolo seriously? and Centre: Latrell Mitchell? Mitchell was on and off all year. His other centre Manu was more consistent and played some excellent games. Also Halfback: Mitchell Moses? How could he have beaten DCE (Manly) - the guy not only was a true leader of the field but played some of his best footy in years. Hooker: Cameron Smith (nah), overall Damien Cook was better all season. Captain - Cameron Smith ? Nah - DCE deserved it (see above). Coach - Bellamy - ? You could argue the Storm failed this year - Minor Premiers by 6 points and failed to make the GF. Also one step back from last year. I don't think Bellamy worked any magic or created anything special or new. Thought it would have been a slam dunk for Des Hasler, if not him then Brad Arthur. Both over achieved with their sides expectations, especially Manly with all their injuries.

Couldn't agree more re Bellamy's jacket, Hutcho. Must have been a bet or a date. Thanks, to you, Superspud, I didn't know the criteria either.

Bellamy should be stripped of his award for that jacket. Disgraceful decision. Hard to argue with many of the positional awards except to say DCE, Papalii and Anthony Tupou had massive years and would have been worthy winners.

First thing is co captains should be excluded. In fact I'll say co captains shouldn't be allowed at all. I think DCE was inspirational at times when chips were down. And as for the ultimate "come on not go on" style captain not one equals Cordner.

Only award I really have a question with his Jackon getting a sportsmanship award for simply giving Momorovski a pat on the back when he missed that crucial goal in the Tigers v Dogs game. There were about 5 players and a ball boy who all patted him on the back and consoled him. Jackson was also the player who, as a leader, led his team to gang tackle a player while that player was being spoken to by the referee. Hardly the action of a classy sportsman. I don't think Jackson is a bad guy or anything, I just think it is sad that we don't have something better to go off to give this award.

Captain and Coach of the year are strange awards. What are the determining factors. Melbourne finished way clear at the top of the ladder but is a week 3 exit a pass mark by their incredibly high standards? Is it for the coach / captain that get the most out of their team. In that case Stuart and Hasler would be right in the mix. How do you determine whether the coach or the captain has the most influence? Is captain for the captain that polled the most votes? The best leader? Most courageous? Inspirational? Very subjective and difficult to predict. Everyone will have their own criteria. I’d have gone Hasler and Jackson - while admitting a huge bias with the latter!!! Hasler took a team from outside the 8 to week two of the semis while dealing with a cruel injury toll Jackson was an inspiration putting everything into every game and dragging the young Bulldogs with him. Great leader in word and deed. The display of sportsmanship that won him the Provan-Summons medal was great leadership too.

If there was something for band of brothers squad of the year, it’d be hard not to give it to Manly. How did they keep on going with that personnel ? Just kept on standing up..to me this is Dessie and Cherry, coach and captain under far more instability and skill poverty than the other top 6 finishers and Belly/Cam. J.Turbo stays on, who knows ..marvellous from their leaders..

DCE best half in the comp by the end but that's not the system. Thought he should've won Captain of the year. He has certainly bucked the trend of the "million dollar player" curse.

The shortest price for any award would've been captain of the year. I would've taken $1.05 on that one.

To qualify you need to have played not more than 5 games the previous season. I am assuming this also means English Super League but not Gundagai in group 9

At first I thought it was a joke that Sivo wasn't nominated but later found out it was because he was suspended twice which rules him out. Think Sivo would of been a shoe in if eligible but can't take anything away from Maumalo. He was one of the few shining lights in a pretty disappointing Warriors side.

Don’t think anyone is surprised at him winning. Mildly surprised the count was as close as it was. I guess he was rested a few times and shares the points with plenty of other stars. Incredible effort for a 19 year old front rower to finish fourth. Pretty comfortable with the positional awards. I could make a case for DCE over Moses at halfback from a play point of view but Moses killed it in the count.

Hard to argue with most selections, particularly Tedesco but Mitchell Moses and Latrell Mitchell wouldn’t have been close for mine.

Two questions. What’s the definition for rookie? And what’s the record for overseas players in the team of the year? This one must come close.

Brad Fittler Medal, Wally Lewis Medal, Dally M Medal. The Churchill Medal would complete the set. I think the last and only other player to do the Dally M Churchill double had the same initials and could play a bit.
