Maxwell, Neser and Swepson should play in South Africa

By mrrexdog / Roar Guru

Following Australia’s disappointing series loss to India, some changes will need to be made for the upcoming tour to South Africa.

If fit, Will Pucovski should open the batting with David Warner, with Marnus Labuschagne at three and Steve Smith at four.

Australia’s two most recent number five batsmen, Matthew Wade and Travis Head, have both struggled recently. Head should go back to the Shield to work on his game, while Wade should be in the Australian Twenty20 squad.

Cameron Green should move up to bat at five, Glenn Maxwell is in excellent form and would be a good option to have at six, and captain Tim Paine bats at seven and keeps.

As for the bowlers, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood should both play while Mitch Starc should play the Twenty20s. Mitch Swepson has done well for Queensland recently and deserves to debut.

Michael Neser has also done well recently, while his bowling would suit South African conditions.

James Pattinson would give Australia an express pace option if required. Joining Pattinson as the reserve quicks are Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird and Nathan Ellis.

Marcus Harris did a reasonable job filling in for the injured Will Pucovski in Sydney. He goes along as one of the reserve batsmen alongside Nic Maddinson and Sam Whiteman, who have both done well in the Shield over the last few seasons.

Nathan Lyon goes as the reserve spinner with Alex Carey going as reserve keeper.

The Australia Twenty20 team will be playing New Zealand at the same time as the South Africa Test series, meaning several first-choice players will be unavailable, yet Australia can still put together a strong team.

Captain Aaron Finch should open the batting with Matthew Wade. Big Bash guns Ben McDermott and Josh Philippe should bat at three and four, with all-rounders Moises Henriques and Mitch Marsh batting at five and six.

Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff have both made successful returns from injury during the Big Bash and along with Mitch Starc should make up the fast bowling unit.

Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar should play as the spinners, but with Agar under an injury cloud it potentially opens up a spot to another spinner, however it needs to be someone capable of batting at seven.

The two back-up spin options are D’Arcy Short – who despite his poor batting form has bowled well this season – and Chris Green.

The back-up quicks are Daniels Sams, Wes Agar and Kane Richardson. The back-up batsmen are Dan Christian, Marcus Stoinis and Chris Lynn.

Big maxwell fan but another selector botch up. He's an incredible talent but now I'd probably slot carey in to wades position if they won't get rid of paine yet . Inglis looms too and of the rest it's steadying the ship with marsh or henriques . No point taking wade and paine and warner may have one year left tops as sth Africa and australian soil may carry them but I'd love to see swepson neser and carey debut in sa m they should have all arguably debuted this summer and Patto should have played mcg. Selectors are too stagnant and reactive

Graham I tend to think lyon and starc are still instant selections for pink ball adelaide DN they are brilliant there and in theory should be on bouncy pitches I don’t think there was the usual bounce at gabba as later in season . What’s clear is rotation was needed at mcg and scg if you look at starcs and lyons averages I was saying it pre test and got a lamping for but India already got on top of starc and lyon at mcg and scg in 2019 and 2020. Selectors would not acknowledge the danger of them being expensive and the two grounds we have struggled at 3 times in four years with same bowlers for most part . Patto and neser were go toos at mcg and scg respectively given their decent averages there . Swepson was robbed a bit of a debut given his empathic shield season . We didn’t even win in Adelaide first innings it was merely the cummins and hazelwood freak show . The signs were there before it and I was very concerned it would go down the way it did but many selectors included wanted to tamper with the team and acknowledge the problems we have at mcg and scg

What has Moises done not to get a run in the tests instead of wade

He captains QLD a lot in the Shield as well.

Yes. It is a shame as he is in really good form. He scored a century in the last shield game before the Big Bash started . I would have him in the test team as a backup keeper to Tim Paine.

He always seems just a bit behind the main players when discussion arise. Carey and Inglis both ahead of him. But Jimmy wouldn't let anybody down. He will likely join Seccombe and Hartley as great QLD keepers who never got a chance to represent their country.

Assuming there will be a COVID bubble in SA, we will need a big squad as we can't just fly a replacement over if required. What happens if another half dozen players are caught sandpapering over there? We will need back up!

Interesting choice with Handscomb. He has become somewhat of a forgotten man when these discussions happen.

Do you think Jimmy Pierson would have a chance to play for Australia this year in either tests or T20s. He is a experienced wicketkeeper and captained the Heat when Lynn was injured.

Exactly, Paul, looking forward. The same as Zampa, Swepson, Agar, etc now instead of Lyon, as our author suggests. He was gifted his 100th Test, so natural point to send him back to Shield, as he’s had no penetration in this last series on his home decks. There were a coupla commentators saying at his average wickets per Test there’s no reason he can’t get to 500 scalps in another 26 Tests! Well, except the fact he can’t penetrate, has developed no real variety and in this series looked every bit as done as Graeme Swann in his last series. Dwanye is right, hindsight is wonderful, but selectors get that right now too and at least another 20 Test apprentice to join Green while we have 3 bats and 3 bowlers in the top 10’s of those Test categories has to be a good rebuild strategy.

Mitch Marsh is a pointless selection in my opinion. So many better and less injury prone options. If we have a theme of pointless selections, I'm backing Michael Klinger to come out of retirement to play NZ, I still think he'd be better value than our hero or zero hype machines we keep picking top of the order.

Big squad - that should just about cover it. Will there be any players left in Australia?

I hope he hasn’t. I’d love him in the team. But I think he got buckleys if they not done it already. I wouldn’t blame him on doing a Gayle.

You’re right, Maxwell should have been selected four or five years ago and persisted with. Not given two games and then flicked. As far as the rest of this article goes I dropped off very quickly at the mention of the name Marsh. Australia has been made to suffer too many times by both of them, can’t we just completely forget about them, or is it the Hohns Langer factor

Totally agree. Perhaps with Sam Whiteman at the top of the order and even Josh Inglis down at 6 or 7?

Yeah, somehow my brain typed Maxwell but my fingers didn't. :stoked: I don't think Maxwell's given up on playing Test cricket again but he must know he's got two chances of doing so and one of those is Buckley's

Yeah I hoped that guy would get back in. I thought him concentrating on long stuff was smart and selectors would see it. Lots from us here is hindsight talk. I trying to remember selectors are seeing more games then me, have better skills to see the details in batting and bowling, have the entire CA at hands. I don’t think in the nets with Starc bowling the selectors are saying ‘gee he looks cooked and bowling rubbish, he told me he is cooked, the dr’s says he cooked. Neser is bowling way better, let’s go with Starc’. CA have set this up with a weak base that don’t help Renshaw, it’s dumb. But they not acknowledge that, just say ‘it’s up to you Renshaw’ to get to this blurry, moving line in the sand.

That’s in reply to my comment, Dwanye? So is choosing young players for the future who can be part of that is less useful than going for a player never capable of building partnerships to get close? For instance, I’m not happy that Renshaw has been completely discounted from future selection. He was 20 when first picked, then sat out of BBL because he was pigeon holed as a long form anchor, so wasn’t playing except for a a few first class games and expected to be in instant form to pressure Test incumbents. All the while CA is focusing on domestic hit and giggle while Tests are played and out of form or injured players need Shield form replacements. It’s an indictment that Renshaw has just about played more English domestic long form cricket than Australian. As far as I’m concerned given 20 Tests & when Paine retires, the middle order of Renshaw, Green & Carey fits well behind Smith & Labuschagne and has the ability to form partnerships in middle and lower order which can produce 500+ totals.

Maxwell should have been selected three summers ago but unfortunately that ship has sailed. He hasn’t played any first class cricket this summer so no he should not be selected for test cricket now.

I certainly agree with Swepson. A lot are blaming Starc for Australia’s inability to bowl the Indians out but Lyon has never really looked like breaking through either. Really this season Australia has only had two bowlers they could depend on and that clearly isn’t good enough. Starc looked like he was playing injured to me or perhaps it is just a form slump. Either way i would rest him for the SA tour and give someone else a go.
