Kurt Capewell joins Broncos as part of rebuild

By Pamela Whaley / Wire

Brisbane have added another big name to their club rebuild after signing Queensland Origin representative Kurt Capewell on a three-year NRL deal.

The Penrith back-rower has played at centre at Origin level and will join a Broncos side that will have South Sydney champion Adam Reynolds in charge of its attack from 2022.

It’s the first recruitment move for the last-placed Broncos since Ben Ikin came on board as a football and performance director last week.

Ikin has a huge opinion of Capewell, who has played 84 NRL games for both Cronulla and Penrith, as well as five games for Queensland.

“Kurt has talent, footy smarts, experience and a strong work ethic, all attributes we want here at the Broncos,” Ikin said.

“In the past 12 months, he has played in an NRL grand final and a winning Queensland State Of Origin team – that experience will be invaluable for our playing group.

“We have some great emerging talent here at the club who are learning to be true rugby league professionals, and I think Kurt will be a perfect addition to the squad in that respect.”

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Capewell, who played under-20s with the Broncos in 2012 and 2013, as well as a grand final win with the Ipswich Jets in 2015 before joining the Sharks in their NRL premiership season.

I'd rather keep TPJ in preference to Lodge but I suppose watch this space. If he he can get the garbage out of his game there's a bit more upside to him. A good centre or preferably a good 5/8 to complement Reynolds would be ideal.

Hot take. You do you man, that seems entirely based on opinion. His name is Kurt by the way, Luke is his brother and played in the halves. A couple of things - he was selected at back row in Origin last year originally, and then was moved to centre at last minute due to injury (I think to Brenko Lee from memory). So it wasn't like he couldn't get a spot at second row. He has filled that hole(!) since. We also don't know the value of his contract. If we have picked him up for south of 400k and he plays most games in the next few years then that is a great signing imo.

I understand why Broncs wanted to move Lodge on. His performances on the whole in the last 18 months have been inconsistent to say the least. But he has been putting in more efforts in the last 2 months. So the Broncs apparently have paid cartage to the tune of $1,000,000 over the term of Lodge's contract. That is a lot of coin. They could have kept Lodge and valued him at $1,000,000 less and had him come off the bench. I can only assume that it is a personality clash with Lodge and decision makers at the Broncs that has forced them to pay an opposition club to take him off their hands. If not, then that is a very poor management decision.

Rellum, you only need to see the performances since NRL returned from the Covid break in 2020 to see that the Broncos were not as fit as the opposition. As the games changes made things faster, the Broncos got even further behind. I remember hearing speakers at a function once referring to the 1992 and 1993 Broncos teams. In some circles of authority is is suggested that the difference between the Broncs winning back to back and being also-rans was Kelvin Giles and his approach to fitness.

I want in on the next game of poker with Ben Ikin. Showing his hand early, I can only imagine Capewell's manager got some zero's added to that contract

i agree in principle but should be building to those higher standards, why risk soft tissue injuries which can quickly become recurring problems essentially just to prove a point

Luke has never played NRL so I'm not suprised your opinion of his signing. His brother Kurt is not a superstar, nor is he being paid as one but he is the 1% guy who makes good teams shine.

Tyrone May? Outside of being Nathan Cleary’s best mate and videographer of note he has little else on his resume. Out of all the losses Penrith will have, he’s the least to worry about

That is the one glaring weakness the Broncs and QLD have. We used to always have a great defender/hitter in the back row. There is nothing like that now.

Yep ! Definitely no Naden, Burton & Capewell. And I don’t think Mitch Kenny , Tyrone May , Scott Sorensen or Jaemon Salmon have signed a contract for next year ? I would hang onto Kenny if I could.

Capewell is a good pick up but the Broncos already have a lot of talented forwards. Their backline, however, looks a bit thin on talent.

I really dont see what all the fuss is about Kurt Capewell. He was a bench player for the Penrith Panthers 2020 season, made the SOO by default because of injuries in the backrow and in the centers, and really isnt setting the field on fire in 2021. He isnt a tackling machine, nor an attacking weapon out wide. Dont get me wrong he is a very dependable player. But he isnt a Matt Gillet type player who was dependable but at the same time made a good team great. He misses tackles front on, doesnt have great lateral movement, and isnt the quickest player going around. But every article I read are salivating over this signing and how much the Broncos are turning a leaf by luring great players. Luke Capewell isnt a great player, nor is a great signing for the amount of money they are offering him. 2020 SOO has inflated his asking price.... and the desperate Broncos (and the media for that matter) bought it hook line and sinker. And if you want evidence, if Kurt Capewell was eligible for NSW how many backrowers would be in front of him for either the 11 or 12 jersey? I can think of about 10. In fact, if QLD didnt have a problem in the centers, there is probably a good chance there are another 5 or 6 QLD players are in front of him as well. And that doesnt even take into account NZ backrowers. And he will be earning more than most of those players. Does that sound like a really "great" signing that media and the Broncos are making it out to be????? I personally think this is a really poor signing and is synonymous with the god awful recruitment strategy of Broncos over the past few years. Dont get me wrong.... good on Luke! But this type of signing actually reminds me of the recruitment strategy of the Bulldogs - going after the wrong type of player. Branko Lee, Kurt Capewell, Adam Reynolds. All rep players. All players that Broncos are paying farrrrrrr too much for. Kurt Capewell and Branko Lee were both fringe players on the best two teams last year. Adam Reynolds will be 34 when his contract expires. I really dont see how these are great signings

Hopefully Capewell is our Kevin Campion. A standard setter that no one messes with.
