Football Australia needs to acknowledge two big mistakes

By BringInCanberra / Roar Guru

Football fans are demanding answers and rightly so. The latest Western United fiasco has pushed everyone over the edge.

The club that promised its own stadium in western Melbourne has now decided to play most of their home games at Lakeside Stadium, the home of the ancient South Melbourne.

This move makes zero sense. South Melbourne were denied entry into the league back in 2018, partly due to the unsuitability of Lakeside. They were gazumped by Western United, who promised a purpose-built stadium that would be a unique selling point for their inclusion.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Western United have been the A-League nomads. They have played in Geelong, Ballarat, Tasmania, Footscray and now intend to play in South Melbourne.

Their new ground isn’t close to being started. Last week they announced that an access road is going to be built soon. This road isn’t for their stadium alone, it’s a road being built for the area.

The fact the club felt the need to dress it up as progress for their stadium speaks volumes about how far behind they are.

Western United have barely averaged 3000 to their games and will struggle to get many more if they keep alienating their fans.

Macarthur FC, meanwhile, have probably been able to hide behind Western United’s failures. The Bulls have hardly set the world on fire either. Their crowds were barely 3000 themselves even though they played at the same hope ground throughout the season.

Many in the Macarthur region have failed to click with the club, who like Western United promised so much.

The club failed to deliver an Indigenous community and have not even trained in the Macarthur area. Instead they have based themselves at Fairfield. Their NPL affiliates are Northbridge, a club who themselves have been all over the place.

The Bulls out-priced their fans last season especially the active ones. The Bullpen was split between an original group and a splinter group who were created by the club.

The Bulls have lost a lot of support with the way fans were treated at the start of their last campaign.

On the field they did well, making the finals and showing plenty of grit on the field. Off the field hardly anyone was interested.

While Western United and the Macarthur Bulls fail to live up to expectations, former big time clubs like South Melbourne and Wollongong continue to have fans push for their inclusion.

Canberra has also promised so much. It is expected Canberra will have a team sooner rather than later, but many feel Australian football missed out on a great chance to grow the game when they missed out back in 2018.

Australian football fans are owed better. And now it’s time for Football Australia to do the right thing.

But there again getting in and out of Perth is relatively straightforward as long as you don’t come from another state! Sydney is something of a nightmare to navigate whether by public transport or by road.

HBF Park is Perth Oval (East Perth's old home ground): so fairly centrally located. The point I was making is Sydney has great outer suburban regional stadiums.

Macarthur bumping the old Bullpen to create their own puppets is still hilarious to me

Hang on. There was zero movement for a couple of years on the planning permission for the stadium, but then there was a secret rushed amendment to the Wyndham Planning Scheme pushed through by the Minister earlier this year. The pace has actually picked up exponentially this year in terms of stadium approval and construction and there is now more hope than ever before on this front.

North Harbor is only accessible by Bus and is now a Baseball Stadium plus the Knights struggled at North Harbour but Public Transport to North Harbour was worse back then then it is now Mount Smart is closer to the Auckland CBD, has train access and is the correct shape

It's all about the money isn't it? If a club can't afford to lose a few million each year for a number of years, they simply can't afford to be in the A League. Most of the NPL clubs struggle with this.

Patience is the key. WU have been around for 2 seasons and not had a proper home. Macarthur FC have had only one Covid ravaged season. Give them both time. No reason why Canberra and a second Qld team can’t come in. Wollongong would be a sensational thing for fans at least. Great away day.

Totally agree. Why keep pushing for designer teams when historical significant teams are really available. Makes no sense. You would have thought they would have learnt from Gold Coast, Auckland, Fury etc... now are Western United to that list.

If you watch the ABC 4 corners it’s actually supportive of football being about the fans and for the fans, it was more of a negative about dodgy money men running the show. For example I would hate for someone from another country changing my teams colours (Glory btw), like City group changed Melb Heart from red to Blue (Melbourne City). But if you think that is good for football sounds like you are one of those that supported the Super league in Europe because it suited the big money men.

I repeat, western United ridiculed South Melbourne when they were awarded the license, they were doing radio interviews in the aftermath saying things like “ we thank the ffa for choosing a club that will build its own stadium over one with an athletics track” You expect South to forget these cheap shots? If anything South showed restraint in its response.

Agree with your last comment, it would surely have been better to play out of knights stadium and probably cost the same as renting the various home stadiums they’ve had. As for South’s, they just look bad out of all this. WU are no threat to South’s.

What nonsense, why would South "smile" when these Western frauds ridiculed them and their stadium? If WU cared about the game they would volunteer to build up knights stadium.

i can tell you first hand, theres nothing to be worried about for adelaide united. Theyre backed by a well known dutch consortium that owns clubs in holland, france and china. my assumption is they’ll probably try and target that consortiums (inparticular uniteds chairman van der pol) time as vice president at Euro Asia Ocean International Sports Institution. The issue there is they were in partnership with the chinese government run, Ocean Group

I will declare my bias up front. Most of the NSL clubs let the game down. Their pettiness knows no bounds. Nothing any of them say or do will surprise me. They should all be kept as far away from the running of the game as is possible. In my mind the next set of criteria should include the owning of a stadium/sporting complex. Should we be looking at the likes of Canberra, or Wollongong or an Auckland, sure, as soon as they can come up and meet any new criteria. Pressure must also be put on existing clubs to go to that next level of stadium ownership. I can hear all the fans screaming now, he's a dreamer, tell'em he's crazy. But unless you set bigger goals for everyone, you are going to be stuck where we are. I think this is the perfect time to start the ball rolling, it may take a generation or two for it to happen but unless you actually start on a journey, you won't ever get to where you want to be. Tonight on the ABC will be another watershed moment. It will be interesting to see what these investigative journalists come up with. I would love to know who is hiding in the back ground, at all clubs, even at my own beloved Adelaide United. Nothing to be afraid of, if there are some corrupt individuals involved at club level shouldn't we want to know about it? If everyone is clean and there are no issues, then why haven't the clubs and these individuals come forth and told us openly and honestly who they are and what they have done wrong in their past.

Nailed it mate. People have short memories where the old NSL clubs are concerned. Make no mistake, the only reason these clubs want a NSD is so they can get a leg in the door. I believe that we do need a NSD however it shouldn't be so cheap and the levels so low that it is used as a stepping stone once P/R is introduced down the track. [way down the track, I hope] One thing the APL and the FA must not do is lower the license fee structure for any new clubs, be those who win promotion or those who win a tender.
