Perth Glory have pulled off a huge coup by signing former Liverpool and England star Daniel Sturridge for the upcoming A-League Men’s season.
Sturridge is a two-time UEFA Champions League and FA Cup winner who scored 68 goals during a six-year spell at Liverpool and also won a Premier League title with Chelsea.
At international level, he was part of England’s squad at both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 UEFA European Championships and featured for Team Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics in London.
The 32-year-old left Turkish side Trabzonspor in March last year after being handed a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules.
Sturridge is now relishing the prospect of beginning a new chapter at the Glory.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to try a new challenge,” he said.
“When the opportunity came about, it felt like the right thing to do, to take my talent somewhere where I can enjoy my football in a competitive league and try and help the team be as successful as they possibly can be.
“I’m going to put my best foot forward, work hard and try and help the team win each game that comes by and then we’ll see where we end up when the season finishes.”

Doea that mean you will stop complaining whenever something happens in favour of a Sydney or Melbourne club, realist?

After 2 weeks of the season starting, they'll probably have to.

But do you???? person who accepts and deals with things as they really are. This one, na not even close an artist or writer who shows or describes people and things as they are in real life”

He's not 33 until next September Andy. You may be well be right re: his injuries- should absolutely be a concern, he has a dreadful record with them. Still I think its great for the A-League, will certainly have a few more eyeballs on it now and will help generate publicity and coverage (which can only be a good thing!)

I am not particularly impressed with Sturridge's signing, however I don't need to be. The A-League fan base does not consist of multiple versions of me. From the social media responses I've seen it appears a smart move. People are excited and there's no doubting his quality. Hopefully his body holds up and he grasps the clean slate Australia is offering. Good luck to him and well done for moving to Perth which is a lovely city indeed.

Strong words - did he ever enter the criminal justice system, or was his wrongdoing addressed by a sports tribunal?

Yeah lets just market a prone injured criminal on the back of a 4 corners story that showed some truths about the A-League.

The Sturridge signing needs to be viewed in light of the last few years of the A-league Men’s and it’s steady decline from the Del Piero/Heskey and if you like Ono stint. Pick your poison who you blame, the FFA via Gallop & Junior Lowy or Foxtels lack of interest in Football, particularly since the loss of the EPL, doesn’t matter interest declined. Tell yourself that concentrating on youth will bring back the football punter on the park and on TV, no it won’t. View Sturridge as a promotional tool alongside Channel 10 and Paramount and I’d say he’s a useful marketing addition to kick start the A-League,
