Pucovski's latest concussion raises doubt over Ashes ambitions

By News / Wire

Prodigious Victorian batsman Will Pucovski has suffered another concussion after being hit on the head by a cricket ball.

The 23-year-old has been concussed up to 10 times in recent years, which has affected his confidence and hampered his efforts to nail down a spot in Australia’s Test side.

Last week Damien Fleming, writing for The Roar, had Pucovski locked into the team for the first Test as an opener alongside David Warner.

“Cricket Victoria confirms Will Pucovski received a knock to the head in training with Victoria last week,” a statement read.

“Will is currently managing his recovery in consultation with CV’s medical staff.

“We look forward to having him back at training as soon as he’s recovered.”

Pucovski made his Test debut against India at the SCG in January, impressing with a first innings 62 as he teamed up with Warner at the top of the order.

He injured his shoulder during the match and was ruled out of the fourth and deciding Test of the series.

Pucovski later needed surgery to fix the problematic shoulder.

In April, Pucovski was among a number of big names, including Travis Head and Matthew Wade, to miss out on new Cricket Australia contracts.

Victoria are yet to begin their Sheffield Shield season due to border restrictions but are expected to clash with NSW in a series of matches soon.

Australia have not played a Test since January but Marcus Harris replaced Pucovski for that match and could be in line to partner Warner for the start of the Ashes on December 8.

After just 24 first-class games, Pucovski is averaging 53.4 and has smashed six hundreds for a top score of 255 not out.

I can't recall compulsive hooker Kim Hughes wearing any - maybe one - on the scone. Cap or helmet. Same thing. Get inside and watch the frigging thing until it clears the fence? -- i do think there are a few more skiddy bowlers whose bouncers are head high rather than ballooing through. someone like Cummins can get it up shoulder high from a fuller length than traditional bouncer territory. and at good speed. might be somethingt o do with the drop-ins? i wouldn't like to face it, even 40 years ago.

I think this latest one was a net practise i.e he wasnt batting? However I keep hearing about his great technique. His batting concussions have been anything but great technique especially considering the road type wickets on offer in the modern game. I acknowledge writing this as an ordinary lower grade cricketer albeit an opener where a different style is was required

Someone else here said it came through from a hole in the net from the nets next to them.

The number of times he's been concussed, I think it's fair to react with an abundance of caution every time. They do add up (worse than add up really), and I think it takes longer to recover every time for a given level of severity.

Perhaps we're talking about two different "hows". I don't care right now about how Puckovski was sconed. That runs a very distant second to his health. I'd reckon his doctors would think the same. Once he's on the road to recovery and a decision needs to be made about his cricketing future, that's when the "how" becomes important. If he doesn't play any more first class cricket, for me, it makes no difference why he kept getting hit, other than as a curiosity. If he decides he wants to keep playing, then I want to know how he got sconed each time and what he's doing to fix the issue(s).

The "how" is relevant at this point. There's something on here, which, from the outside, seems to be beyond just batting technique given the varying circumstances of incidents Is it an eyesight/perceptive vision thing? We are all invested in the top-line cricket in the country, so we should be kept in the loop as to why it is this keeps happening as it's likely to affect how the team is not only selected in the short term, but how the team may need to be constructed longer term.

A real shame. And just like that, Aus has handed the urn back to the Poms! We simply do not have the batting mettle to beat them. T20 has crushed and pumped a once fantastic sport. Fingers crossed this is Warners farewell summer. Fingers crossed he doesnt end up on a commentary team either, for the sake of all out IQs.

Desperately sad news for the young man…and cricket fans. Wish him all the best in his recovery but there must be questions about his future. His long term health must be a priority. :unhappy:

And hence the increase in concussions. Langer had so many you think he might have passed on some words of wisdom on this score?

Hope so, it would be rough to end a career over it, in rugby terms Ritchie McCaw had big concussion problems early in his career and went on to play a fair bit, so hopefully it'll all come good, time heals etc..
