Could the Trbojevic brothers switch codes?

By Riggers / Roar Rookie

With the recent implosion of the Manly Sea Eagles, it is worth asking a question: could the Trbojevics make the switch to rugby union, and would it be a success?

On initial consideration, you would suggest yes to both as well as a resounding no.

This family is born and bred rugby league.

In addition, they are also the life blood of the Sea Eagles and are somewhat dismayed with the current situation.

Having said that, can you actually see either of the two well-established brothers and perhaps their youngest, playing against their brethren from the Northern Beaches in the NRL?

I think the answer to that is we could, but it’s not something they could do without some sort of emotion or trepidation.

That then lends to Rugby Australia’s wish list mentioned by Hamish McLennan some months back.

Surely Tom would be high on the list given the lack of fullback options, however, Jake and Ben could also be impressive purchases, although there are no standout positions in the XV a side game for their skillsets.

Potentially Jake could be a strong back rower and Ben, given he is younger, might be able to develop into a strong centre in rugby union.

Sports opinion delivered daily

I believe all three are contracted until 2026, so it’s probably a moot point, but if there is a clause against them breaking their contract with Manly to pursue an opposing team, there may not be one against them breaking codes.

Although I’m sure the NRL have that covered.

It would obviously be better served in junior talent, but it would be intriguing to see.

It’s tough to see Jake or Tom playing for anyone else in the NRL, but stranger things have happened.

Ben is still finding his feet, but would be solid in a Super Rugby team.

Could, would, can they make it in rugby union, if they had three years?

And I forgot one more necessary skill that NRL players, especially piggies, must have to be able to forge a career in Rugby. They need to be able to play at the minimum 40 minutes without being replaced by a benchie for a 20-25 minute rest and oxygen tank before coming back on as a "finisher". I would say it is true that a league forward runs more metres as they are constantly running back and forth to form the so-called 10m line. A team starved of possession will quickly run out of gas due to the efforts of tackling 3 to a man and running up and back in defence. Then when its their turn with the pill, a forward charges his 3-6 m (depending on who the referee has bet on this weekend), plays the ball and then get a breather. So yes, league players are more aerobic and cover more km in a match. But you can't tell me that a rugby forward does less work. Not only must you still cover ground in attack and defence (though the 10m gap is missing) but you have to attend heaps of attack and defence rucks and mauls plus lift big bu99ers in line-outs and seriously push in scrums, without a 20 minute breather. That is a lot of work for a big man.

Thugby Mitch Moses is pushing up towards 30. Better to get someone younger who can be skilled in all the Wallabies plays like dropping the ball, kicking out on the full, giving away penalties or failing to kick a ball out within the time allocated. It could take a few years.

Jurbo at 2. He's an old grizzly forward. If he can pass, he can throw. Although throwing straight has never been a KPI for a Tahs hooker

Oh Rob I love you're passion but Peter Ryan at 6....ewww. I was living in Canberra from 96 to 2001 and endured the feral jackasses putrid success. Ryan played most of the games off the bench, was completely lost postionally and usually stood about 30 metres behind the play in defence waiting for a kick or something. He did get a start for the feral jackasses against the Lions in 2000. He had an impact then. He slapped (yes, slapped) the fullback Balshaw and then got yellow carded for punching Martin Corry. I'm assuming it was cause Corry mocked him about his rubbish mauling technique which was rubbish. Hes not at the level of rubbish code hoppers like a Will Chambers or Benji Marshall but yeah he was bad. My view may be biased by my burning hatred of the aforementioned mules but I stand by it. Stupid donkeys

I assume that Riggers is their agent, using rugby to try to get a high bid from some desperate NRL club. I wouldn't pay any of them one cent until each has proven themselves to be adequate in a position against decent opposition over a season. I think SBW did that although he had contractual problems also. So Jake would have to be a competent prop against at the very least scrumming against quality Shute shield props to have any hope of a contract in that position and I highly doubt he would survive. Perhaps elsewhere in the pack? Well I would say only as a #8 or perhaps a #6 but he would have to show he can do more in a ruck than just flop and hope. So attend 40+ rucks in a game, plus likely lift in lineouts, run the ball without a 10m start-up, tackle beasts and be a force in mauls. Good luck Jake! Tom is out in the backs, where NRL players have succeeded. He could be a very good fullback if he can kick accurately downtown and into the corners, but likely his best position would be in the centres. But again, not a cent until he shows some nuance in a ruck and positioning in a defence. I would die for Mitchell Moses the Parramatta half back but play him in Union at first five. He has vision plus a good long spiral pass and can kick and can tackle big men running hard at him. Where I do roflmfao is reading people throwing Cameron Smith as the greatest half-back the Australian rugby missed out on. Give me a break, the longest pass I ever saw him throw was a harbour-bridge 5m pass to one of his forwards. Surely there are some very good NRL players who could succeed, most of them would be backs. I honestly can't think of many others though tbh I rarely watch the NRL If I watch a match its only the Feast of Headhunters aka State of Origin or some of the grand final. :stoked:

Agree. Here is an idea RA should do what the nrl does and send talented kids to the rugby nursery schools (pay their tuition fees) and sign them to rugby until they are 23. With rugby league exclusion policies.

These questions need qualification. Any elite athlete, especially one at the top of their game 'can' switch codes. The better question is, can they play well at Super level right off the bat, can they walk into a Wallabies team right off the bat ... how long would it take to get up to speed? What position would they play? Its far harder in rugby to get up to speed on the forwards stuff. Jake just does not have the time and he's too slow and not enough of a ball player for the backs. Defending would be a struggle for him. Tom is a freak and after an apprenticship of a year in Super rugby he could be a 13 or a winger and a 15 if he gets a kicking game. But, we don;t need wingers who have their training wheels on, 13 is hard to learn defensivley ... would he be better than Ikitau in 12 months? While being a better athlete, I say no. NRL fans will focus on the fact that he breaks tackles etc but there are more things happening off the ball in rugby that the casual observer misses. I think he'd be great off the bench. We don't have a decent FB. If he worked on positioning and kicking, then surely that would be the place for him. Less stand out competition.

Amen. They have such limited skills. Even Koribete’s defence is at times still utterly hopeless.

I don’t think so KC. Weak scrum, non existent lineout, weak ruck, can’t maul in attack or defence and their ball runners tend to isolate themselves. Really struggle to hold the ball for more than five phases without needing to kick it away. And always seem to be playing at least two players short.

So another bunch of wannabe players who’d take 3 years to acheive anything and even then only if they had the brains to develop - so that rules out most League players anyway. I honestly don’t understand the love with these muppets at league who have never actually met any of the expectations at rugby. Sure the odd one like Brad Thorn and SBW did - after a number of years learning the game but most of them have always had more negatives than positives in their game. How about just developing the rugby players that exist rather than chasing these losers
