High-profile Freo fans urge club to cut Woodside

By News / Wire

Fremantle’s inaugural football manager Gerard McNeill and ex-player Dale Kickett are among the high-profile signatories of an open letter urging the Dockers to sever sponsorship ties with Woodside Energy.

Australia’s biggest exporter of natural gas, Woodside will have been a major partner of the Dockers for 13 years by the time its current sponsorship contract runs out at the end of 2023.

As part of its patronage, Woodside has invested heavily in Fremantle’s Indigenous program and displays its logo on the club’s guernsey.

Since re-committing to the Dockers in October last year, Woodside has merged with BHP’s oil and gas assets to become one of the 10 biggest independent energy companies in the world by production.

According to the Clean Energy Regulator, Woodside’s production of 9.1 million tonnes of greenhouse gases made the company the ninth-highest emitter in Australia for the 2020-21 financial year.

The company is currently developing Project Scarborough, which non-profit organisation Climate Analytics says undermines Australia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement.

On Wednesday morning, a group of 10 high-profile Dockers fans released an open letter encouraging the club to end its relationship with Woodside.

The group includes Kickett, McNeill, former WA premier Carmen Lawrence, author Tim Winton, Nobel Prize-winning climate scientist Bill Hare and former Woodside climate change advisor Alex Hillman.

“Climate change is already creating catastrophic and deadly conditions for communities here and overseas, alongside massive harm to natural systems that support our economy and wellbeing,” the letter reads.

“All responsible institutions have an obligation to signal that we must accelerate the transition to a decarbonised economy and cease all new fossil fuel projects.”

McNeill likened moving on from Woodside to bans on cigarette advertising in Australian sport.

“The time came when that was no longer appropriate, and it is the same today with fossil fuel companies like Woodside,” he said in a statement.

“This is important leadership the club can provide regarding growing concerns about climate change.”

The group’s letter comes as major sponsor Alinta Energy opts not to renew its contract with Cricket Australia after Australian Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins urged CA to align itself with sustainable sponsors.

In a statement, Cricket Australia insisted Alinta’s decision related to a change in brand strategy, not Cummins’ comments.

Elsewhere, Netball Australia will honour its multi-million dollar contract with mining company Hancock Prospecting despite concerns from Indigenous squad member Donnell Wallam.

I agree a balance between fossil a renewable power has to be, based on what is achievable with current technology. Renewables are way to far away to solely rely on them just yet, additionally the current technology of renewables is precious metal and materials heavy to the point that if we could manufacture all of these turbines, solar farms, storage batteries and the transmission infrastructure to support current and future requirements, the current known resources are not plentiful enough to manufacture it all; and then the problem of how do you maintain this infrastructure with no currently known resources, so unfortunately we will either have to wait for better tech to be developed or be prepared to live through cold winters without heat and hot summers without cooling if this current path is to be religiously followed. Remember some of these environmental experts said the rain in Australia would never be able to fill our dams again not that long ago and some of them who also claim that the sea levels are rising have purchased sea side properties, don’t trust celebrity environmentalists or those who own or are invested in the production of these renewable products as they have a financial interest.

I am sure that West Coast would welcome Woodside and Atlinta as sponsors, if Freo developed a problem with accepting sponsors from the resource sector. These huge resource companies are a principal reason that W.A. clubs are becoming so wealthy and fiscally powerful. Many eastern states clubs can only dream of the amount of top shelf resource sponsorship dollars that are available to West Coast and Freo. Members pushing for banning sponsorship from the resource sector should be refunded and quickly shown the door - perhaps even referred to Netball Australia or even Cricket Australia....

There's a healthy practical balance somewhere with fossil fuels and renewables, but unless you're prepared to take risks to create and lead change then the hypocrisy doesn't come much greater than from those refusing to budge whilst the planet burns yet still sok ken off its t eat. It's even easier not to fight and do nothing if it's going to disturb your comfort zone; and to wait for others to lead the way. How is what you're espousing less virtue signalling than anything else? It's generally a weak lazy shallow argument too rattled by confrontation and who's skills are limited to throwing mud.

Private planes don’t run on renewables and as far as I know Ferrari and other performance car companies don’t produce EV’s it not just your power company that contributes to your carbon footprint. They could also live in smaller homes instead of mansions with 20 bedrooms. Renewables are way to far away to solely rely on them yet and the technology is of renewables it rare precious metal and materials heavy to the point that if we could manufacture all of these turbines, solar farms, storage batteries and the transmission infrastructure to support it the current known resources are not enough so unfortunately we will either have to wait for better tech or be prepared to live through cold winters without heat and hot summers without cooling if this current path is to be religiously followed.

No, points were if you identify a so called problem then present a viable solution and unless you are also prepared to live with out the products companies like Woodside produce you are a hypocrite who is simply virtue signaling to the twitterverse. Additionally we would no be having this conversation if it was not for products produced by Woodside or other similar companies around this country. Do you support your great club stepping away from Ford as a sponsor? They produce significant amounts of carbon in the research and development of their cars as well as the world wide production of said cars and trucks not to mention the mining of the material to produce them. Do you also support the games to be played at GMHBA being day games because I’m pretty sure those lights are not carbon neutral and are in fact powered by gas and coal. I suppose it’s easy to fight for the environment when the effects don’t impact you and your life. Personally I support renewable energy and working towards a cleaner and greener environment however I balance these views to what is actually achievable. The only ones disadvantaged by Woodside being dropped is Freo, it won’t stop them (Woodside) producing.

The group that includes Kickett, McNeill, former WA premier Carmen Lawrence, author Tim Winton, Nobel Prize-winning climate scientist Bill Hare and former Woodside climate change advisor Alex Hillman. Easy to sit back and snipe from the bushes, about time they the green warriors put their own money where their mouths are and find the alternative to backfill lost revenue or dip into their own pockets or shut the hell up. Like most green leftists they easily identify roadblocks and why something is wrong , but almost never are they able to identify viable solutions to these so called problems. Are these people also suggesting all freo home games are played during daylight hours to reduce their carbon footprint or the team travel by a vehicle made from renewable materials and powered by renewable power, I doubt it very much these people should avoid being photographed in an air conditioned space or driving a car, flying in an aircraft for work or holidays unless they are happy to by hypocritical.

Correct, Malcolm Turnbull was very much backing the Paris Agreement to state that carbon emissions are measured by where they are burnt, not where they were actually dug up from.
